I have a dilemma. I don't like writing in a lot of detail because I'm afraid I'll get the detail wrong. But I feel like people want/expect more detail. So what do I do?
For example, supposedly my character has some sort of knowledge about different species of fish (if only being able to identify them), but as far as I can tell, there's no comprehensive list of every single known species in Mizahar. So, in that circumstance, is it ok to assume most things that exist on earth also exist in similar climates in Mizahar? Or should I say "that one type of fish whose name I totally know but can't say out loud because the one writing this doesn't know"?
Another thing I find difficult to guess the details of is terrain. I mean obviously is snows in Avanthal, but are there hills? Trees? Right now I feel like describing any place in as little detail as possible and hope it doesn't come up...which doesn't make for very immersive storytelling...
I guess my question is, how bad would it be to get some of the details wrong, and how can I get it to not happen too much without sacrificing the details altogether?
