And miles and miles began to slip by.

The carriage was a swiftly-moving one, but even so, it took a solid fifteen days to make the journey. They stopped occasionally, with the man bringing Nel food and water, and allowing her to stretch and attend to other bodily needs. He was confident enough in his ability to keep control of the situation that he made no attempt to restrain Nel during these times.

He was polite, but not inclined to talk. It was a lonely trip, and there was little to alleviate the boredom.

Eventually, the scenery outside Nel's dirt-streaked window began to change. The terrain became more hilly, and the road more winding. At length, holes, tunnels, and mounds of rubble swung into view at irregular intervals. This was what was left of the pre-Valterrian mining that had been the lifeblood of Sunberth in the days of the Alahean Empire. All of it stood silent now, disused for centuries.

One massive pile of detrius was apparently on fire. Thick smoke curled from its top, and the acrid smell filtered into the carriage. Faint noises came from that direction, and it was clear that it was the scene of some human activity.

Farther on they went, and as they began to descend from the hills, Sunberth itself became visible. It was an ugly town, filled with squat, ramshackle buildings that appeared to have been placed at random. It had none of the serene orderliness of Syliras, the scholarly seriousness of Zeltiva, or even the shimmering liquidity of Mura. It stood in defiance of any orderliness, of any over-arching principle save and except the principle of doing what one pleased.

The carriage slowed, winding its way through dirt-covered streets. Finding a main thoroughfare, it turned left. Some businesses were scattered along the street, though each of them seemed to have its own private guard.

Finally, the carriage shuddered to a stop in front of a surprisingly well-kept building with a brick exterior, and a pair of double doors that were flanked by a pair of unsmiling Akalak. The sign in front read TALL JOHNNY'S CASINO & CAGE FIGHTS.

The door to the carriage swung open. The red-eyed man was there, his hat now removed.

"Welcome to our destination, lady Nel."

Accustomed to traveling a-sea with a muck-closet for a bedroom, Nel made due inside the carriage the best ways she knew how. Over the course of those fifteen days, she sang and slept and told her favorite stories to the air, acting out the best parts, of course, and if her crimson-eyed driver could hear it all, well, she didn't care. Epic poems of high adventure and woeful songs of loss on the open water; if there was a thing that Nel could do endlessly, it was keep herself entertained.

She was a model prisoner, because she saw no way around it. Either she behaved herself, or her relaxed, confident jailer would probably make her far more uncomfortable. Whether she was hostage, or new slave, or just a bone of amusement to chew on for someone else, well -- she took it like she took every other potential disaster life tossed her way: as well as she could, and with little struggle.

The worst possible torture, of course, was that he wouldn't really talk to her. That almost drove her crazy.

She climbed out of the carriage, bright eyes up and dancing all around to take in Sunberth. A catlike stretch, and a yawn, and she rubbed at her face a moment and then turned around to look up at the casino's facade.

"Just Nel is fine," she mumbled, glancing to the red-eyed man, an eyebrow quirking upward. "I guess we're not here for a poker game."

With that and a tired shrug, she started towards the double doors, and the two Akalak standing beside them.

The inside of the building was larger than it might have appeared from the inside. Half of it was filled by a bustling casino, while the other half was occupied by a small combat arena surrounded by a cage.

The man led her through the maze of bodies and tables to the far wall. They walked down a long corridor, and then stopped at a massive oaken door. The man rapped smartly on it, and was greeted by a quick "Come in."

They entered the room behind, which was a plush, opulent room, complete with oak and mahogany furniture and gold accents on the walls. A dapperly-dressed man, tall and slim, rose to his feet and bowed politely to Nel.

"Thank you for bringing our guest, Pete," he said to the red-eyed man, who nodded in return. "And to you, Nel Sayo, welcome to Sunberth. My name is Johnny, and I'm the proprietor of this institution. As Pete may have mentioned to you, I'm expecting a visit from my old associate Murdoch. I'd very much like for you to be there, which is why I sent for you."

He gestured with one hand, indicating the whole establishment. "You're welcome to have the run of the place until Murdoch arrives. I've arranged for a room to be prepared for you in the guest suites, which I trust will be to your liking. Should you need anything else, please simply ask."

There was a message here, perhaps an interesting one. Nel would find that everything Johnny had said was true -- her suite was lavish, any needs she expressed would be attended to, and she was able to go anywhere in the Casino she wished. Of course, she wasn't allowed to leave the establishment -- should she try, the Akalak guards would see to it that it didn't happen. But inside, she was treated as an honored guest.

Nel's eyes were wide and wandering as Pete led her through the casino. She'd never seen anything quite like it before, for all her travels. No doubt the ship had put to port somewhere that had a casino or two, but her brother had never let her near them. She understood, dimly, as she looked around, why.

She bit back a snide remark about being sent for when finally face-to-face with Tall Johnny -- largely because she was sure that such a comment wouldn't get her anywhere. Nel was the sort of person to make the best of any situation, but her heart sank when he mentioned Murdoch. He was going to be furious; he was going to blame her, she thought, with growing dread, after it was all over, he'd blame her for just...being there to be sent for, for becoming a liability. And he wouldn't be wrong; it was all her fault.

Whatever this facade of politesse and gentility was for, she knew it wasn't real. She'd known many a pirate captain who feigned the same sort of gentlemanly attitude, mostly to keep his prisoners feeling secure and even safe, until he such time as he decided to let them know they actually weren't, when the realization would strike most painfully. So she just nodded politely to Johnny, and didn't ask him why he wanted her there, or what he planned to do to her, or to Murdoch, assuming that even if he told her, she wouldn't be able to find a way out of it. At least, not yet. She was a survivor, though, if she was anything, and though she kept her thoughts to herself and held her peace, a glint of defiance sparkled through the pale blue of her eyes.

"Thanks," she mumbled, before being ushered out of the beautifully appointed office, and escorted to her suites.

She was a relatively quiet prisoner. She ate a lot, and spent plenty of time jumping on the bed, but was otherwise little to no trouble. One attempt to leave the casino -- just one, a day or two after arriving -- but after the first time the Akalaks tossed her back into her suite, she stayed put, and didn't try again. She did, though, talk to everyone. Anyone and everyone, in the casino, and they might find that her presence brightened the place a little bit. Prisoner or no, Nel knew how to make friends, and if she didn't have any money to spend at the tables, she was a lively, chattering girl with an open smile and very little to hide.

So she spent her days, waiting for the moment when it would all be taken away.
