Arthur Graystone

Basic Information

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Birthday: 75th day of Fall, 489 AV
Birthplace: Denval
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 145 lbs
Skin Tone: Light Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Physical Description: You'd think a guy who spends most of his time in the wild would have more of a jungle man look. Rugged biceps, rock-hard abs, nothing but a loincloth to cover his manly parts...the works. That's how he would be if he was a crazy drunk. In this day in age who wears a loincloth anymore. And who actually has enough muscle to be a true jungle man- who's not an Akalak mind you. Certainly not Arthur.

You want rock-hard abs? Well Arthur doesn't have them. All you get is a little something of nothing. You want rugged biceps? Arthur doesn't have those either. Just like the abs, he doesn't have much going for him. So basically Arthur has the slightly above Average Joe physique.

But not being built like a muscle man is Arthur's only problem body-wise. He's not that bad to look at actually. Even without the muscles he's still got his long flowing brown hair, which he regularly cuts short because of the combing hassle. Still, even with this, he looks o.k. for a guy who rarely showers.

Clothing: It's the job of a thief to go on unnoticed, not to stand out, and blend into a crowd. Arthur fails in all of these areas. If the smell of onions doesn't draw attention, his appearance usually does. Wherever he goes, he's always wearing his signature black cloak. You can of course imagine the looks he gets when it's scorching hot. But since he's used to the cold, wearing the cloak is just natural.

Now if Arthur takes off the cloak for some reason, which he does in serious fights, you'll find an all black outfit consisting of a short sleeved shirt, pants, and boots. He also has a cheap pair of leather armor above all this and a pair of black gauntlets to complete the outfit. All this, coupled with the cloak, makes Arthur an open target in the mornings and invisible at night.

Character Concept

Personality

In this world of ours with danger around any corner, you need the skills to survive and the brains to make tough decisions. And what happens when you don't have the brains. You end up like Arthur, the naive man who got tricked into becoming a thief. Ignorant. Trusting. Fickle. When you're brainless you get all sorts of problems. But that's how you end up when you live away from the world most of your life.

But there are some advantages to being stupid. For instance, since he usually doesn't know what's going on, he stays out of major trouble. Sure you could count the run-in with the Zith, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. For the most part, he remains neutral. If he does happen to step in, it's either because he was convinced to do so or it was an accident, which is often the case. But of course he could still back out even if he gets into something by accident.

So why does he choose to stay even after accidentally being "the hero"? It just comes back to being stupid. No brains means you don't know how dangerous a situation is or that you're supposed to run in the first place. The only time he does run is when someone yells at him to do so. Otherwise he stays both because he's ignorant to the situation and/or because he just wants to.

Motivations: The greatest motivation in Arthur's life is the drive to become the King of Thieves. Of course he has no idea who the current King of Thieves is or if there is one. Even so, he plans to become the greatest thief so that he can make the title of King his own. And he'll do whatever he wants to make that dream a reality. No matter how many houses he has to break into or how many knights he has to run from, he'll always strive to be the best.

A smaller but still great motivation for Arthur is his ignorant nature. You can of course imagine why. The only reason it's below his major goal in life is because of just that. Being King is Arthur's whole reason for living...at the moment anyway. Nothing's more important than being King...at the moment.

Likes:
• Larceny- The most obvious of Arthur's loves, Larceny for Arthur usually includes pickpocketing and petty theft. He does dabble in breaking and entering, but he mostly steers clear of serious crimes.

• The Cold- Growing up in Denval, where freezing was an understatement, it's only natural that Arthur would grow accustomed to the cold. That's why he loves winter so much. It reminds him of the days in Denval, which he hated so much. It's an ironic kind of nostalgia.

• His cloak- The cloak and the cold go hand and hand. Arthur's cloak kept him from freezing more times than he could counts. He's just used to wearing it all the time in the cold. So why would he want to take it off in the heat.

• The color black- Black clothes. Black armor. Black backpack. If it's black Arthur likes it. And is that such a problem? Black is the color of mystery; doesn't the rogue have to be mysterious.

• Knives- Arthur's weapon of choice is the Assassin's Dagger. But that doesn't mean he won't use other weapons. The only problem is, he only uses knives. Axes and clubs only slow him down. Knives are easy to use, light to carry, and just look good on Arthur.

Dislikes:
•The Heat- The opposite of cold is heat. So Arthur hates heat. After all, it's not like having a cloak and two layers of clothing keeps him chilled in the summer.

•Bulky Weapons- If it's long and/or heavy, Arthur won't use it. Swords, Axes, Clubs, Spears, it's all trash to him. Just give him a knife or get out of his way.

•Killing Needlessly- Let's face it. There always comes a time when a man's forced to take a life. Whether it be for personal gain or to aid another, you just have to kill sometimes. But that doesn't mean you have to like it. That's how Arthur feels. He kills only when he has to and even when he does he doesn't like it. All in all, murder is the last resort. If he could, he'd rather just beat a guy until he's near-death.

•Being Robbed- Can you imagine stealing from a thief? That's like beating an Akalak at body building. Imagine how Arthur feels when someone bests him with the skills he uses. The shame usually drives Arthur to some kind of petty revenge, which usually involves stealing from the other thief.

Fears: Arthur only fears one thing in this world. Only one creature, or rather race of creatures, can make Arthur sweat, panic, and run on sight. They are the dreaded Winged-Nighstalkers, the Zith. And can you really blame him for being afraid of them? You try being hunted by one and see if you come out loving them all.

Background Information

History

Arthur's life has been one filled with adventure. From the day he first set off to become a thief to when he found his way to the bandit holy grounds, his life was always crazy. But what was life like before all that? How did the aspiring King of Thieves fair before leaving for the world? Believe it or not, he was once a simple farmer.

Born in Denval to Fiona Grassblade and Hann Graystone, Arthur's life was actually uneventful growing up. His parents weren't overly strict or too lenient, they never had any money troubles, and conflict was simply non-existent. Since his parents were both farmers, Arthur even had his own future planned out for him. There was only one problem. It was boring. Not just the preparation to become farmer, but the complete lack of drama whatsoever.

Salvation didn't come, though, until he was sixteen. By then he'd already started work as a farmer. A horrible farmer, mind you. Though his parents had prepared him for it, he hadn't payed much attention to them. He always just zoned in and out during instruction. It would actually be this lack of interest that helped him come to terms with the decision to be a thief.

So how did Arthur get the idea to become a thief exactly? You can give the local bad influence credit for that. Noll was his name and larceny was his game. But he wasn't good at it. In fact, he may have been the worst thief in all of Mizahar. Yet somehow he always managed to get away even after being caught.

Now when Arthur saw Noll, he saw something in him that he wished he had. Noll was actually happy to be a thief. He loved the Mizas he got from pickpocketing. He loved the treasure he found in homes. He loved the wind on his face as he ran from danger. He loved all the good and the bad of being a thief. Arthur hated everything about farming.

At first, Arthur was drawn to Noll out of curiosity. But, as he spent more time with him, Arthur actually began to show interest in the art of thievery. Finally, with some convincing from Noll, Arthur began to pursue a life of crime. Taking on the role of apprentice, Arthur began to learn all the wrong ways to steal. It took a couple years, but Arthur eventually became the new world's worst thief in the world.

Luckily the bad years with Noll didn't last long. Though Noll had managed to somehow keep his place in Denval for a while, he was eventually booted out simply because the tag-team needed to be separated. That would have left Arthur to pickpocket alone if not for Noll's last words. He wanted Arthur to actually stop the thief training. Noll was convinced that Arthur was ready to set off, but he wanted him to prepare for the outside world beforehand.

So Arthur spent another two years in Denval, learning how to use weapons, hunt, and anything else he thought was important. He only learned the basics of everything, though. Just like with farming, Arthur didn't pay much attention during the training. Even so, he figured it was time to leave simply because he didn't want to spend another minute in the village.

Thus the journey to become King truly began. As you can imagine, it was a rough start for the apprentice of the worst thief. In fact, he really didn't learn that he was bad until he found himself wandering into Wind Reach, which he somehow mistook for Denval. You can imagine how he felt seeing kids do his job without getting caught once. And it just got worse from there.

As it turns out, misfortune was drawn to Arthur. For instance, there was one day when he had all his food stolen by scavengers. Another day he had to hide in a tree for two days straight because of angry bears. However, the worst event of his life came when he had to take on an angry Zith. How was he supposed to know freeing a slave would get him a would-be life-long enemy? It's only recently that he managed to take care of him.

Now even though these experiences were bad, they did have their upside. For instance, finding the Zith showed him just how powerless he was. If it wasn't for that he wouldn't have been motivated to become a stronger rogue, which he found was a title fit for him. The same goes for the encounters with bears. They motivated him to become a better hunter. Each encounter contributed to Arthur's growth and his eventually status.

So now we get back to the present. Believe it or not, it's only been three years since Arthur set off to become a thief. All his crazy adventures and lifelong encounters happened over the course of a few years. Now Arthur is a better rogue, but he's still down at the junior level. But that's why he's made his way to the great bandit kingdom...Sunberth.
