Status: Deader than Dead. Like, seriously dead. No really, Arlo is never coming back. Ever.

Appearance: Arlo Berakailen stands 6'2" and has a wiry, slim build. He is not particularly muscular, nor does he look particularly imposing, but he does give the appearance of being fairly intelligent. Has steel-gray eyes, wavy, dark brown hair and a short "circle" beard. Usually dressed in clothes designed to blend in, Arlo really prefers not to be in the lime-light, preferring instead to be as unremarkable as possible. Has a cross-shaped scar on his left forearm, which he rubs absentmindedly when bored or intrigued.

Character Concept

Arlo Berakailen is a man on a mission. Growing up on the streets of Sunberth he has learned the hard way that there were two ways to survive the City of Lies, either get strong, or get smart. He chose the latter. Wasn't much of a choice, really, ever since he was small, Arlo had been a scrawny kid, and he had relied on his keen intellect to keep his skin whole.

He began by being a runner for any of the local gangs he could latch onto, and used his small size (he later had a growth spurt) to his advantage, hiding in dark corners and alleyways at night, listening in on conversations best left to the dark of night. In this way he learned the art of Information, which he later turned into a career.

Nowadays, Arlo buys and sells secrets, for a singular purpose. Those who know his history know why he is so determined to gather as much information as possible. Those who don't, see a man so focused on his path that he blinds himself to the world around him.

Character History

Arlo Berakailen's story begins like many in Sunberth, with violence and violation. His mother was raped when she was very young, and having no idea how to raise a child, took her life when he was five years of age. There weren't many places a boy at that age could go, and Arlo spend several years scrounging the streets, barely surviving the gangs of boys that sometimes terrorize smaller orphans like him.

When he was seven, Arlo stumbled his way into a parchment shop in the marketplace. For two years, he fetched water and assisted the shop in return for room and board, and the shop owner, taking pity on the boy, taught him basic reading. All looked to be set for Arlo to be a merchant's apprentice. Until one night.

On that fateful night, when he reached ten years of age, the store in which he worked was ransacked, the owner killed. The gang that did this, a minor gang and one of many that rose and fell almost as the seasons changed, spared Arlo on a whim, instead making him their "runner", essentially a messenger to deliver notices to shops being shaken down for money, or to deliver goods from one place to another. They never suspected that while he was delivering his messages, he was reading them too.

Realizing that one of the lieutenants in the gang was plotting to assassinate the leader (from some of the messages he was running), Arlo managed his first use of Intelligence, telling the boss the lieutenant that the boss was onto him, and then telling the boss the lieutenant was there to kill him. In the ensuing row, they killed each other, leaving Arlo free.

Arlo wandered Sunberth for several years after that, as he slowly gathered information, bought and sold it to earn his daily bread. But one day that all changed. One piece of information, dropped in the Pig's Foot on accident, set Arlo's course for the rest of his life.

His father was alive. The one heirloom he had of the man identified him as a member of the Sun's Berth. Years of collecting information was coming to a head, Arlo was sure his father was somewhere in Sunberth.

No one is entirely sure what Arlo planned to do if he did meet his father. Would there be words? Or would there be swords? Only Arlo knows for sure.
