Lab 21-D (Research of Glyphing and Morphing)

When you first walk into Gilldarey Penwood's Private Lab you might think that you have stumbled into some sort of sub-library. The books that line the bookshelves all around the room may be worth a fortune to a Glypher or an Artist but they were not bought or loaned from the library. These books were all written by Penwood himself in the two hundred plus years he has been on Sahova. Most books are simply filled with illustrious drawings. Others are filled with Sigils that do absolutely nothing other than look perfectly nice.

There are a few books, however, that are positively filled with knowledge that any budding Glypher, or otherwise, would kill for and on Sahova this can be taken rather literally. In order to prevent his precious secrets from being stolen Penwood has augmented the room and several of his books in real sigils that are just waiting for the wrong person to touch open or stand on them. One does not want to be on the receiving end of such things.

There is a writing desk in the centre. It has many drawers that contain ink and parchment and paint brushes and quills and all manner of mundane, writing equipment. On the desk you might find a letter or a half finished piece of artwork. If you are having an extremely good day you might find a half finished sigil. Interestingly one will find that there are absolutely no magic scrolls within Penwood's laboratory despite the fact that his very research requires him to create, and have created, a large amount of them.

Where he keeps his completed scrolls has long been a mystery. When a certain password is spoken, a password that only Penwood knows, a fake bookshelf slides away into the wall revealing a cornucopia of scrolls all neatly laid out into categorised, and then alphabetised, scrollcases. The most dangerous scrolls are of course located in The Vault but the scrolls located here are worth enough in value and magical insight that Penwood would sooner give his life than reveal it's existence.

Gilldarey is known to only ever take male bodies and, if he can get them, they most always have blonde wavy hair and blue eyes. It is said this is what his original body looked like. Gilldarey is one of the cleanest Nuits on the Island and regularly takes Amaryllis 'special' baths. If he can help it he is always smart looking and hygienic.

History: Gilldarey Penwood was born in the coastal city of Zeltiva just over three hundred years ago. His mother was a Professor at the University and his father a sailor in the Zeltivan Navy. Gilldarey was born with an odd kind of severe motion sickness that resulted in him having sudden fits of nausea if he moved, spun or wobbled too quickly. The result was that he spent most of his time indoors during his childhood. He spent most of his time drawing funny symbols and daydreaming about an adventurous life he could never lead.

His mother began to feed him simple designs to inspire his artwork. In truth she was feeding him some basic glyphs. As he grew older she introduced him to the whole world of Glyphing and began to teach him Nador-Canoch also. She was the leading expert in Zeltiva on both disciplines. Gilldarey's drawings got better and better until people were beginning to commission him to draw up their Sigils for him.

In his twenty first year Gilldarey was declined a job as a Professor at the University. 'Much too young' they had said. Gilldarey immediately began to pack. His mother begged him to reconsider. When he expressed his iron will on the subject his mother asked of him where he was going. Gilldarey had read word of a magical research facility. He told his mother that he was going to make the grandest Glyphs in the whole of Mizahar and that he would not return until he had.

So Gilldarey chartered a boat to the undead isle and set off on his journey. He had anticipated hellish nausea but he had not quite anticipated the hellish journey ahead. The sea was a harsh mistress. He could barely keep anything down. When finally he reached Sahova he was a malnourished mess. Some say this is why he became a Nuit almost immediately after he reached the undead citadel. Others say it was because he took one look at the intricacies of Sahovan life and decided there was little point in remaining a Pulser for long in the Island.

Of course you probably won't find many people talking about the Wizard Nuit these days. He didn't progress very far up the ladder before he was old news. Whether it was politics or his own lack of 'real' magical skill is something probably only he and a few select other people know about. He is known to spend his days working on Morphing models for the use of non morphers with the Warden Riyanna. It is safe to say he never saw his mother again.

Personality: Gilldarey has fully integrated himself with the way of Sahovan thinking. He is a truly self-serving egoist. He may have some or rather a lot of regrets about how his life turned out but, like many of the Wizards in Sahova, he has learned to keep any true feelings far beneath the surface. He may seem relatively charming and harmless at first glance but he still seeks to climb the Sahovan ladder and isn't afraid to employ ruthless tactics.
