[Day 2] Trapped

Previous Thread: Day One

Season of Winter, Day 58, 513 AV
Location: Trapped in an Abandoned House

The morning came slowly, the sun even slower. It hid behind the thick clouds in the sky for the first half of the early morning, then only peeked from the cracks for a few chimes at a time. Its rays fell into the gap in the ceiling to barely touch the wooden boards that made the floor Amora still slept on. The fire that had grown in the hearth the night before had been turned to ash for two or three bells before the thief woke from the cold air that began to fill the building.

The girl moved slowly from her side to her bottom, then raised her arms above her head to stretch out her torso and let out a long, restless yawn. Sleeping on hard dusty wood wasn’t what she was used to; not that she normally slept on clouds, but it was enough to make her stiff. Her eyes trailed to the hearth before she even could think about food. What laid in there were blackened planks of wood over a bed of ashes. It would be difficult to start another fire and would take some time, but she wouldn’t have any choice but to get one going soon. The winter air was harsh and was flooding into the building in stronger bursts at a time, making the thief’s teeth chatter and body shake violently.

Amora quickly moved her backpack in front of her and opened it to sift through all of the items in an almost frantic matter to find her flint and steel again. “Where are they?! Where are they?! WHERE ARE THEY?!” Her patience was depleting quickly with the frozen wind that found its way through the roof and directly onto the girl’s head. In a near frantic manner, she found herself dumping the contents of her pack onto the floor. It was an unfortunate action she decided to take, because of all the dust on the ground her food was nearly inedible.

Frustration set in on her. Though she had only woken up a chime or so earlier, she felt as if she had been up for days. The thief never fared well in the cold. Winter was an infectious season to her; it affected how she dressed, how she made money, how she ate, and even how she thought. Spring would be a pure miracle for her, and it was the only thing that kept her going through all the dreadful ninety-two days.

[Day 2] Trapped

Postby Amora Jade on August 16th, 2014, 7:13 pm

Once she realized her impatience would only hurt her, the black-haired girl sat back on her heels and tilted her head upwards before taking in a deep long breath to let it out slowly. Amora looked over all of the items that now laid on the floor. There was a bit of food now covered in dust that she had stolen the day before, her half-full water skin, and her coin purse that only held a few copper mizas. The only things that were missing were her flint and steel tools.

The thief looked around her desperately to find them, the crisp air was beginning to burn her nose and throat with every breath she took. Without being able to find them on the ground, her eyes trailed to the pit where the fire from the night before burned strong. The sun peaked from behind it’s fortress of clouds for only a moment; one of its rays found its way into the building and touched the inside of the hearth. The light reflected itself off something inside of the hearth and touched the ground in front of the girl.

It took a moment for her curiosity to set in enough to want to look for whatever it was the light had touched, but once it did she crawled to the pit and peaked inside. In the corner there was something bulging from the ashes, only to show a bit of silver. Amora reached her hand out to grab it; she was surprised when she picked it up to find something else was connected to it by a small rope.

Wait..” The thief wiped away some of the ashes to find that it was what she had been searching for. A laugh escaped her belly; it was filled with more joy than she would ever expect to have while being trapped inside an old abandoned building. The girl unbuckled her jacket to use her shirt to wipe away the majority of the ashes. The tools were stained black but she wasn’t willing to waste the little bit of water she had to clean them completely. The thief could only hope that once she began to strike them together that the ashes would be removed just enough to create a spark.

Shhhhhk shhhk shhk shk shk shk

The sound of the flint scraping the steel echoed in her ears as she began to zone out and get lost in her own thoughts. Her vision began to tunnel as she stared into the pit that held the fuel for her fire. The cold had gotten to her and was beginning to slow her down and force her into her thoughts completely. The voice of her father began to fill her head.

”I promise I will take you along tomorrow.”
“This time I’m not lying.”
“I love you, Amora.”
“I love you, Amora.”
“...Amora.”
“...Amora.”

Shyke!” The sudden wave of heat followed by flames flew in the thief’s face and forced into a coughing panic. It was pure luck that the fire had barely touched her skin before she pulled away.

[Day 2] Trapped

Amora wasn’t sure exactly how the fire had taken ablaze so suddenly, but there were no complaints. After the burning left her skin she was able to enjoy the heat that radiated from the pit and concentrate on more important things, such as food.

The thief looked at the ground beside her to see her dusty food. She picked up a piece of dried meat and stale bread and wiped them off the best she could before taking a bite of each. The awful taste of dirt and dust filled her mouth and stayed until she finished her small meal. In a desperate attempt to get the disgusting taste out of her mouth she grabbed her waterskin and gulped down several ounces of water until it was empty. Thankfully it worked, but now she was out of water.

Amora would need to find a way out of that building very soon or she would dehydrate; for now though she just wanted to enjoy the warmth she missed so much. The girl tightened her coat around her and stared into the flames. She enjoyed the way they danced and crackled, it was both comforting and mesmerizing. The incredible embrace of the heat kept her sitting in the same position for about a bell. It wasn’t until she noticed the fire start to dwindle that she decided to stand back up and walk to the crushed table that broke her fall the day before.

The thief broke apart the legs that once held the table up the best she could to make smaller pieces of wood, then placed them on top of the fire. Slowly the flames began to engulf each piece, the worn paint on them made a useful agent in keeping the fire alive and quickening the process of the wood catching fire. Each piece eased into a black color before a beautiful orange flame would claim its spot on top of it. An odd smell emerged from the fire from the burning paint, but it didn’t ruin the pleasure of the heat.

Amora looked out the hole that was positioned in the middle of the roof and was able to see the sun peaking out from behind the clouds again. It seemed as if it was struggling to take its place in the sky and trying to push the clouds away. The black haired girl wished so badly that it could, and that all of the snow would melt and the air outside would be warm again. She couldn’t wait until Spring, the new year. The excitement of it put a butterfly feeling inside her stomach and a smile on her lips.

Hmm..

The thought of escaping and actually being able to see the Spring season again nudged at her and forced Amora onto her feet. Once again she strode to the door that was blocked by snow the day before. The thief put her shoulder against the door and began to push as hard as she could to try to make it budge. Unfortunately the heat from the hearth wasn’t able to reach the other side of the building and help to melt some of the snow blockade that trapped her inside, making it impossible for her to make the door move more than a couple inches. Feeling defeated, Amora slid to her bottom and sat with her back against the door.

[Day 2] Trapped

Postby Amora Jade on August 16th, 2014, 7:15 pm

The thief looked to the roof once more, trying to see if there was any way she’d be able to jump high enough to grab onto the edge of the hole and pull herself out. In a slight hope that she might be able to she found herself standing up to walk over to it. Once she was underneath she began to jump straight into the air as high as she could in a desperate attempt to free herself from the prison in which she was trapped.

Amora’s last jump was the hardest and the closest she had come to reaching the top, but still a failure. Once her feet hit the ground a shock of pain shot through her ribs. The thief had almost forgotten about the injury she acquired the day before. The pain forced her to her knees.

Ugh.. Why me? I didn’t even do anything that bad.. just stole some food. It’s not like I killed someone!

Amora began to massage her ribs, all the while causing herself more pain on top of relief. She knew she’d have to rest for the remainder of the day in order to preserve the small amount of energy she had acquired from the food she had eaten. The girl knew she didn’t have much at all left and there was no way it was going to last her very much longer. Amora made her way back to the hearth and relaxed in the warm grasp of the fire.

The thief entertained herself by singing old lullabies and tavern songs, then also by just simply talking to herself about how she should go about stealing from market stands from there on out. She went over in her head all of her failures and successes and tried her best to make the connections in between each to be sure and avoid getting caught again.

The day drifted slowly along, the sun inched its way over the horizon and out of sight completely while the moon took its place. Amora found herself removing her coat and using it as a pillow that night since the fire provided her with enough heat to keep her from becoming sick.
