Some Questions from a New Player! - Syliran Knights

Postby Bitt on March 24th, 2014, 10:09 am

Hello everyone! My current predicament is that I am scouring through page upon page of Lore as I try to decide upon and refine a concept for my character. I am sure most people here can relate!

Despite the herculean task before me, I felt it would be wise to take a moment and reach out to the community for some minor clarification on a few tiny points not 'specifically' mentioned in the lore (from what I can tell).

First of all, Cliché though it may be I find myself wanting to make a magic-wielding character. I find the high-risk nature of magic in Mizahar very appealing and feel it would be a lot of fun to role-play (in-particular the familiars, should my character find himself in a situation in which he can obtain one). Anyway, one of the most appealing professions for an aspiring mage who desires to be more than a glorified scholar is that of a Syliran Knight (A Warrior-Mage). It is my intent to start as a squire and work my way up should I decide to follow this path. But therein lies my confusion and need for clarification.

My question is this: Can someone be squired to a Warrior-Mage or does the order only accept already accomplished mages?
My second question(s): Assuming being a 'magical-squire' is possible, am I allowed to act as the NPC Knight who teaches me? Can it be a family member (given the frat-house-like legacy system the knights have in place)?

This is all for now. Depending on my research and whims over the next week or so I may be back with more questions!

Some Questions from a New Player! - Syliran Knights

You are more than welcome to be a mage-squire starting out. :)

As for your NPC Patron, all you have to do is read the rules written here, create your patron, and post it in the same link. If you want it to be a family member, you should talk with Radiant, the Domain Storyteller for Syliras, since the normal NPCs rules have family members falling under their own thing. I've seen it done in the past, but I'd let them weigh in.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for answering the questions, Orion! *Hugs the Doctor-Squire* :D I shall add my points as well.

===================

Welcome to Mizahar, Bitt! Radiant, DS of Syliras here. I'm here to answer your questions regarding Syliran Knights.

Bitt, if you ask me personally, Cliche or not is not something to worry about. All PCs turn out unique once play as them and flesh them out for a while as each writer is different. ;) Rest assured, no 2 Mage PCs are ever the same.

I'm honored that you have chosen to be a Mage Knight. Thank you, Bitt. Yes they are called Mage-Knight officially, they are more than just warrior-mages, they are Knight-mages! Chivalry, Honor, and Humility!

Now to answer your questions.

1. Yes, you can be squired to a Mage-Knight. It can be a PC or NPC (Patron Mage-Knight)

2. Your Patron Knight, assuming he/she is an NPC, then you can treat the Patron as an extension to your character, a companion where you can play as them. No one, except Mods (Storytellers), may play your patron Knight NPC as long, as you're still under his/her patronage, without your permission. Also, you'll be a "Mage-Squire".

Also, yes, it can be your family member, but remember that the family member becomes a free-for-grab Patron NPC if somehow Bitt left the order or is retired (I hope it won't happen, of course, but I must tell you).

Take a look at these links I provide for you. Assuming you have read the necessary lores as mentioned Syliras

Useful Links:
-Shield Points System: It's very important for PC squires/knights to be aware of the system.
-NPC Master List: You can see the various established Patron Knight NPCs here, and if you want to make your own you can do it...
-NPC Request Page. Post your NPC form here, remember to read the rules to create Patron Knight NPCs.

Once you have create your character sheet, choose a patron, you can PM me and I'll review them both, once approved, I'll give you a Storyteller Secrets link regarding it.

I hope you will have fun in Syliras! :D

Some Questions from a New Player! - Syliran Knights

Postby Bitt on March 24th, 2014, 1:50 pm

Thank you both so much for the fast replies! With this I can finally begin fleshing out my character!

One final question(s) in regards to my character sheet:

Since I will be given squire-residence, etc. Do I forgo the 'house' in the starting package? (Including the 500gm/Horse alternative)
Do I own the knight-related equipment assigned to me (Sword, etc.) and need to include it in my belongings list, or do I add a "have my loaned sword today" type of statement in each applicable post? I know the latter applies for a horse used for training but I am not sure about other equipment.

Thanks again! I shall serve the knights to the best of my ability!

Welcome! Yes bring in the mageness

Graders Please Note :
As Ball is getting closer and closer to maxing out Pyken as a skill, I would like to request that in places where Ball is not doing enough to constitute Pyken XP if Pyken technique lores could be issued instead.

Examples of proper XP level for Pyken would be: Ball developing or refining his technique by adding new thing against an actual moving target, not a dummy.

The use of basic skills alone are not enough to accomplish XP at Ball's current level of Pyken.

Thank you.

I will be handling all Ball related posts on Mondays @ 1800 my time *

Some Questions from a New Player! - Syliran Knights

Postby Radiant on March 24th, 2014, 2:02 pm

Hi! All of those questions can be answered if you read the lore on Syliran Knights, especially the "Playing a Knight or Squire Character" section. But for your convenience, I'll paste it here.

Lore wrote:Wages, Living Expenses, and Equipment
The Syliran Knights pay unranked knights with a wage 4 GM/day plus housing, give them two meals per day as well as weapons, armor, etc. The Knight can use practice mounts provided by the Windmount Stables in order to hone their Riding skills, but if they wish to have their own mount they must provide their own horses until they are higher rank - but care of said beasts is done free of charge by Windmount Stables. Squires are unpaid, but enjoy three meals a day and are given the same use of weapons, armor, and horses. Please note: Unless you are sent on an official quest or job by the Order (meaning, by an AS or DS of Syliras) you will not have access to warhorses unless you purchase one with your own money.

When playing a Knight, your Seasonal expenses are considered Poor (45gm per season) even though your living conditions are considered Good. This is because the Knights are provided with basic meals. However, you cannot trade in your Housing for 500gm. When playing a Squire, your Seasonal expense is handled by the Knights, though your living conditions are considered Common; Squires live in communal barracks, and the food provided is more than enough to keep you healthy but it's nothing at all fancy.

Also, all necessary armor and weapons, of passable quality, are provided by the Knights. These are the most basic of weapons, usually in only adequate condition, and unless you are actively training you are only provided with the weaponry required to do your job - you won't get fifteen different weapons to keep with you at all times. These are not considered your possessions, and can be neither sold nor traded. Any that are lost or damaged will have their value subtracted from your ledger. If you choose to list the armor or weapons your character "borrows" from the Knights, be sure not to list it in your own Equipment section. Create another list to indicate that these are not your possessions.

Thanks for that! I read the lore but wasn't sure if there was a distinction between Knights and Squires in regards to what was written (Housing-wise). Thanks for the clarification!

I must have glanced over the part about the weapons. I have read A LOT of lore pages today, that part probably didn't stick. There's so much lore! :P I love it.
