Season of Winter, Day 18, 513 AV Location: Castle Commons No matter how many times someone says something contrary to this fact, it makes it no less true: a thief's work is difficult. Not to even include all of the physical challenges they face to accomplish their tasks, the mental ones are what really break them down. There is a constant stress in being caught and having their asses handed to them on a silver platter by someone seeking revenge over their lost valuables. Also, what if they live in a poor area? There is rarely anything worth taking besides food which makes it difficult to even survive. So why don't they just pick another profession... right? Well for some it's just not that easy. Not everyone is blessed with the skills of a blacksmith or the grace of a dancer, and not everyone has the luxury of a good education that can actually send them somewhere. Some of these thieves that so many people think aren't worth the dirt on the bottom of their boots are just simply people born into the misfortune of not having the essential needs of making themselves honorable in society. Luckily some of these people have found a place where they belong; a place such as the wonderful city of anarchists: Sunberth. Young Miss Amora Jade was one of these unfortunate souls to be brought into the world and raised to do the only thing her mother could teach her to do, for neither of them were provided with an education or the finances to obtain one. Amora was raised into being a thief and she never really thought of even trying to do anything else with her life. There was some sort of unusual comfort she found in simply reaching her hand into the pocket of an unsuspecting fool. Everyday she would sit and watch as the population of Sunberth walked around her, nearly completely unaware of her presence. Her favorite place to do so was the busy market of the Castle Commons. It was early when she had taken her place on one of the old wooden benches in the area, not many people had found their way onto the streets yet so it was easy to find a good seating place. It was only the beginning of the winter season but Amora could already feel the freezing clutch of the crisp air. It stung as she took in each breath and made her hate the season even more with each passing moment. As time passed people began to flood the area and create good cover for a thief such as herself to escape into after grabbing a thing or two from a market stand. After sitting there for so long and nearly freezing herself to the bench, Amora decided it'd be a good idea to get up and earn herself a little meal. She made her way through the crowd, as swiftly as her clumsy self could, to a food stand just a few yards from where she had been parked. Quickly, and without thought, she snatched some bread and fruit from the stand and tried to bury herself in the mass of bodies again before she was noticed. Unfortunately, and like many times before, it didn't end up the way she planned. Instead of gracefully blending in with the others, she tripped over someone's foot and dropped her goods. The small commotion she caused from falling was enough to attract the attention of the stall owner and the guard he had hired to help keep thieves such as herself away. "Hey! You filthy no-good thief! You stole that from me!" The old man was furious and pointed his shaky finger at the girl still laying on the ground. He looked at the huge muscular man he had hired, "What the hell do I pay you for? Get her!" The old man pulled out his own sword and walked towards her at the side of his body guard. He should have known better than to leave his stall completely unattended, because as soon as they both walked away more people began to take food and run. The brawny mercenary picked Amora up by the back of her shirt and brought her up to face-level with himself, her feet dangled above the ground at about 18 inches. "You no s'posed to take things that no belong to ya!" His breath was wretched and he spat as he talked, nearly all of his teeth were missing and the few that remained were rotten to the core. Amora flinched away and kicked him as hard as she could, being sure to hold on to his arm behind her head so that her shirt wouldn't choke her. "Let me go! You can have the damn food back!" "I don't want that food back after your filthy hands done been all over it!" The old man screamed up at her and put his sword up to her stomach. "Give me one good reason I shouldn't spill your guts all over the ground right now!" A crowd had formed to watch the show, though they kept their distance. That was just what Amora needed - an embarrassing death. |
