"My Speaking" My Thoughts

As soon as Ball failed to gain control of his weapon the first time the squirrel couldn’t help but burst out laughing, this didn’t make matters easy for Ball and his second attempt to gain control of his weapon made the squirrel’s attempt to remain in control of his vocalization of Ball’s humiliation non-existent. Yet the end results was the same, Ball had managed to make the squirrel laugh so hard he couldn’t control himself and Ball was slowly getting angry at the weapon and it had defeated him. Cursed petching piece of wood! He growled at it and yet he stayed caution of it and stayed away from it until it slowed down and came to a standstill.

When the squirrel was finally under control of his laughter Archie reached over and plucked the weapon out of the ground and swung the weapon around for Ball to grab ahold of it. With the weapon in hands again he tried his best to imitate the squirrel in his stance, yet there was blantent things Ball couldn’t do, for instance, Ball had to nail so his balance was offset and forced the expert pyken to take into account his positioning of legs, torso, arms, and weapon.

Shifting his right foot forward and his left foot back and turned it out, this planted the Pycon’s lower body into a wider more stabled position, his torso Ball had to shift his body straighter and adjust his center of gravity to a more lower stable place in relation to his legs, his arms were clasping the flexible weapon in front of him, left in front of the right. His right hand in position at the flat end of the weapon, the flex of the weapon was visible as the pointed tip flexed the weapon’s length slightly as Ball could feel his arms quivering gently as he held it forward. To compensate for his arms being preoccupied Ball had to once more shifted his center of gravity lower and towards the rear of his body to stabilize the whole of his body.

With Archi already in position Ball did his best to try and replicate a stabbing he would’ve used for Thorn or even his rapier, yet it wasn’t the same, the py-pole was flexible and far lighter than the lance he had trained with. Archailist was already explaining how the weapon wasn’t like the human weapons he was already accustoming himself with.

Thorn was a stiff length of metal, nearly the same length as the pole he now held in his hands, but it was heavier and was wide closer to his hands and ended in a point – the length and the point was were the similarities ended however. The second weapon that came to mind was the rapier he bought early on in his solo training prior to being placed under Ser Pycon. The only similarities they had were that the rapier had flex, was slender and narrow, and also ended in a point… But the rapier lacked in length and the pole was heavier. The flex of the rapier was far less than the pole’s flex.

Yet his training in either of those weapons was useless in transferable understanding to the weapon he had now. The only thing he could compare the flexibility of the pole with was his own body, the length of the pole he could compare to Thorn, lastly the point and slenderness of the weapon related to the rapier… I know I can use the rapier and Thorn in a spearing fashion that is similar to one another yet how did I perform that tactical weapon attack? Ball watched as Archie swung the weapon in a short arch, his monocular vision paying close attention to how the squirrel’s arms reacted and compensated for the bowing of the weapon, it appeared to come almost on instinct.

When he felt ready though the Pycon shifted the placement of his weapon, nestling the flat end close to his body so that the length of the weapon ran up the length of his right arm, stabilized and couched as if it was a lance and he was about to charge the jousting shields. His left arm he shifted in place of where his right hand was originally, the driving force behind the weapon. His arm was bent so it crossed his chest, a naturally defensive position for his arm that he could easily detach his hand and swing it across his body to block a spearing attack if he was quick enough to do so.

With his eye trained on Archie, being the smaller of the two pycons, Ball’s compensation of the spear like motion of the weapon required him to be step forward using his left foot as a pushing force, the step forward brought his right foot to the rear while at the same time his right hand pushed the weapon forward, his left hand was too tight against the pole and the smaller pycon could feel the resistance in his hand as the pole slid hard and slowly against his palm.

To compensate for his weapon’s slight downward bow Ball attempted to shift his stabilizing hand up and over, which is what Ball figured out cause the weapon to swing it’s bowing the opposite direction and thus straighten out. It failed and Ball twisting his left arm to shift the direction of the weapon’s bowing did correct the bowing, but it twisted hard to the right.

The length, sudden shift of the weapon’s metal tip, and Ball’s lack of understanding tipped Ball over and planted his arse on the ground with a thud. The pole’s pointed end bent into the air and then slapped the ground, sending a hard vibration up the pole and the flat end took the force that travelled to it and the end smacked Ball in the back of the head.

“Ugh…” He grunted.

My Words | Your Words | My Thoughts

At first it'd been funny, but now it was just getting a little silly, how the other Pycon struggled to make a basic stab with the weapon. "Told you. It's not like any of those silly human weapons. That's where it gets its advantages from, as well as disadvantages." Rearing back his own pole and stabbing it into the ground hard, he reached out with one paw to grab hold of Ball under one arm and lift him back up to his feet before releasing the pole and taking a step back again. This was obviously going to take a bit more work than he'd anticipated. "With this thing.. you can't just stab it and wave it around like a lunatic, because it's not a human thing. It's not a spear, or a sword.." As he spoke, he reared back the pole and felt it flexing under his grip until the metal tip was beginning to pull back against the balance of the rest of the pole, giving it a natural curve that snapped forwards as he slammed it down, giving it extra power when it hit the dirt again.

"This weapon.. it bends, like you. The humans, they use these weapons that don't bend.. you just hit things with them and that's the end of it. This, you can't do that with. You need to bend with it. Otherwise.. well, it smacks you in the face." He wasn't a very good teacher, least of all with this sort-of thing. All he could really do was pass down what knowledge he'd gathered from his time around the pole, and try to express it to the other Pycon in the simplest words that he could possibly think of. "You try and just smack someone with this, it'll rebound back and it'll smack you in the face afterwards. Try and stab someone with it and it'll bend around them and do nothing."

Again, he pointed to the same spot and gestured for Ball to take up the stance again. "You had it just about right before.. I think. You just need to stop trying to use it like a human weapon. Use your hands, don't be afraid to flex the weapon when it starts to bend." He made a mock-stabbing motion and when the pole began to bend awkwardly in his little paws, the squirrel began to angle his paws so that between them, a bend formed that slowly corrected the stab so that it kept moving in the same direction as before. It wasn't a fast stab.. it wouldn't cause any damage if there was someone on the other side. Perhaps if he had more practice, though...

"Just.. try and remember that you're not holding steel. Keep practicing with it. The more time you spend just holding this weapon, the more competent your control will be with it when it comes to swinging it in a dangerous situation. Now, try and hit me with it again." The metal cap was raised again and set facing Ball's head, with little twists of the handle making the tip bob up and down like a coiled snake ready to strike. Arch really didn't have much intention of trying to actually hit the other Pycon, since he still seemed rather insecure in his handling.. but it was still pretty funny to just make a few little joking gestures using the weapon. "Instead of stabbing, try swinging with it. Be gentle with the swing though - you don't want to lose control, because the balance will throw you hard."

In truth, the more he stood there and watched the other Pycon make these mistakes, the more he realized that it might just be better to take him to try and work out with Hammer Fist. The ex-assassin had a pretty good grasp of how the weapons worked.. much better than that of the squirrel, not to mention that she could probably teach better as well. Arch was still struggling to see how Ball would actually use the pole.. since he was evidently a little too small to be able to build up the resistance or the counterweight on the pole to actually launch himself into the air, as Arch was used to. Maybe with time, he'd get it.. or maybe he just wasn't built for it.

"My Speaking" My Thoughts

Ball took hold of the dangling weapon in front of his face, he had watched as the heavier pycon was able to flex and bend the weapon like it was a toy. A highly dangerous toy, but a toy nonetheless. Yet when the squirrel explained more that the weapon was closer related to his body’s own ability to flex and move Ball nodded, he knew all about how his body was able to flex, bend, and contort into shapes and in directions the larger pycons just weren’t able to handle.

With his left hand taking a firm grip on the weapon he allowed his full arm to extend along the length of the weapon, he could feel the weapon already bending to his grip as he tried to hold tightly along the length, the tension there was building and Ball was afraid to keep his hold as tight, taking hold of the weapon closer to the end Ball made sure his right hand had a good grip and then shifted his left hand down so that there was a space between his arm and the pole, there was still tension in the pole, but it wasn’t as strong and the feeling of having the whole pole explode from his body and damage him or the Squirrel had diminished. The squirrel is right. This weapon isn’t like Thorn or the rapier. This weapon is far more flexible. Thorn required a tough firm grip on it with the weapon held tightly against my body so it wouldn’t fly away upon impact. The rapier isn’t long enough to use in this fashion…

His right hand once more slide to the base of the pole, the tension was there he could feel it quivering as his fingers wrapped themselves around the pole gingerly, but the tension was building once again as he shifted his tightening fingers to a more secure grip. This caused Ball to release his grip on the pole and instead just pressed his palm hard against the weapon, resting his thumb against the curved side. The placement of his hands felt comfortable on the weapon, but the weapon seemed odd in its positioning.

Shifting his body and lowering his left arm some Ball could feel the weapon shifting it’s bend with him, the bend was closer to his left hand but still arching towards the pointed end. Ball knew he had no choice but to allow the weapon to keep that downward arch on the front of the weapon so as he stepped forward with his right foot again, pushing the weapon forward, he shifted his right hand so the palm was cupping the top of the pole and using his hand as a pushing fulcrum forced the potential energy stored within the pole between his hands to rumble up the weapon. This releasing of energy started the straightening process of the weapon’s end facing Archailist and the part held between his hands bent.

The more energy he released, the more of a bend he created until he was forced to release the bending as the weapon was starting to reverse the bend on the pointed side and the point was starting upward towards the sky. To reverse the pole’s bending Ball shifted his right hand back down so that he was once more cupping the back end of the weapon, this was done slowly else Ball was afraid that the weapon would react in a negative way and Ball would once more find himself face planting. Sadly though the total novice in the use of the pypole corrected the bending flow of the weapon’s potential energy and Ball found himself dropping the weapon’s point too rapidly and the pole’s pointed end was digging into the ground.

The sudden change in control of the weapon cause too much of a negative bend on Ball’s side and the energy released, the pyken artist found himself forced to decide if he should release or stay holding on to the weapon. The weapon doesn’t control you Ball. You control it. He reminded himself as he released the weapon as it once more became a straight pole in the ground, the releasing sent Ball through the air and the competent acrobat found himself rolling and then flopping hard on the ground. The pole won yet another round. Ball sat back up, allowing his body to catch up with the orientation he was now currently in before turning to face both squirrel and pole. There is sat, quivering in the air as if mocking the squire.

I shall control your every quiver, every vibration, every bend you make or Sylir can strike me down now.

My Words | Your Words | My Thoughts

Once again, Arch found his limits being tested to avoid laughing as the Pycon struggling to control his weapon. It wasn't like a dog or some complicated contraption.. just a stretchy pole, really. It was really difficult to see just what was so complicated with the thing. Then again, Arch was almost double the size of Ball and had plenty more weight to anchor himself to the ground when he flexed and threw the pole about. Not as useful when he wanted to throw himself across long distances.. but very useful when he wanted to swing the pole around and make it hit someone around the ankles with enough force to leave some decent bruises.

That didn't make it any easier trying to figure out what to tell Ball at this point. "You're still not doing it." He knew it from the start, but he was still emphasizing the point as he walked over and removed Ball's Py-Pole from the ground to try and display it to him. By holding the pole in the middle with only one paw, he could make sure that the balance was equal on both sides before he added another paw and slowly stretched out from the middle. "You need to have balance and control. When the pole bends, you need to bend as well. You need to be fluid. Feel when the pole stretches and accustom for it - know that it's going to stretch back, one way or another."

Finally, he held out the pole for Ball while focusing on his own to try and demonstrate better what he meant. "I think you're struggling because you keep trying to control the pole, but when you do that, you put pressure on it. You're straining it far too much - because of that, it's resisting. The pole has much more strength than you do, Ball. Don't focus all your energy on fighting it.. just focus on using it instead." Perhaps it wasn't the best way to word it, but it was true. With all the strength Ball had, just trying to punch or push the pole around the way he wished.. well, the pole was just going to end up fighting back, as it'd already done quite a few times.

"Just take it one step at a time. First, hold it up straight." He demonstrated by taking hold of the middle, just as he'd done before and stretching out his paws until he had a solid grip but kept the balance across the length. "Then, bend it back." His paws flexed and soon stretched the pole so that the middle was bending out towards the Pycon - he could feel the pressure building up between both paws but kept his grip steady. Not tight, not loose.. just gripping it with the fingers to make sure that it wasn't going to accidentally bounce out and smack himself or the other Pycon across the face. "Then, release one end and watch it correct itself." One paw let go and, suddenly, the metal cap was flying out and slamming into the ground just before Ball, hard.

"My Speaking" My Thoughts

Listening to the squirrel tell him how to use a weapon was a bit odd, Ball normally was the one the telling others how to pay attention and fight like it was their last day alive, even if it was a spar… The weapon needs control, it’s a weapon, but this one fights back… And hard. There is no doubt about that at all. I am trying too hard? I need to be more flexible? Damn it all Squirrel, I am made of petching clay… I ain’t flexible enough? I’ll give you flexible… Ball’s internal rant was starting to be visible as he clenched his right hand into a tight fist. Yet when the squirrel handed back his weapon, after his brief second demonstration Ball sighed and decided to resign himself to learning this weapon even if it killed him.

Taking hold of the weapon in both hands Ball could feel what Archie was talking about, more than normal really… Slowly the pycon spread out his grip until he was about shoulder width apart and paused as he could feel the tension building slightly, shifting a hand so the staff was held closer to his body caused the weapon to bow and the tension to build at his hands. This position he held until the pole felt like it wanted to tear off his hand and kill both him and the squirrel in revenge. So Ball shifted his body, going with the ‘flow’ of the weapon’s tension. His body shifted with towards the left hand, his right shifting down slightly to accommodate the motion and the pole snapped in a graceful arch in the direction that he once stood in.

This sudden release of tension sent a gush of wind and dust towards the pycon and he ignored it as he continued with the flowing tension, because as soon as the pole snapped back straight the tension was already pulling it towards a bend in the opposite direction. This forced Ball to shift his weight again to another placement. This time he tried to rotate the weapon as he shifted so the weapon would be point at a slight downward angle in the end, almost as if he was aiming to block an attack with the body of the pole and the force building within was the countering. Yet as Ball shifted his pole into the position, his left hand guiding it upward and his right hand holding it down, the tension residing within the pole flowed away and Ball returned to a normal standing position with what appeared to be a standard pole in hand.

“Something like that?” Ball was starting to understand what the squirrel meant.

My Words | Your Words | My Thoughts

It seemed that, despite his terrible efforts to act as a teacher and mentor, Ball was beginning to get the basic understanding. "You tell me. It's not trying to kill you, is it?" He was still uncertain, but that didn't matter - as long as Ball actually felt comfortable holding and using the pole.. as long as it wasn't trying to kill him. "Try working with small amounts of pressure. Pull the tip back a few inches and then let it snap back into place. Experiment a little with it, see what you can do." Just for a little helping hand, the squirrel gave a little demonstration with his own pole by swinging it around and bringing it into place at his hip. Nice, relaxed grip but paws spread out wide enough to make sure there was a decent balance that settled about half-way down the length of the pole and sat comfortably.

He was able to handle a bit more pressure along the pole, so when he begun to flex the shaft and twist his grip to bring it more towards the narrow butt, it left the metal cap arcing wide over his head and almost folding back on itself. The squirrel could handle it, just about. The pole took a surprising amount of strength to use if one really tried to stretch the limit - not that he was pushing anywhere near the true limits of the pole. Just close enough to the limits of his own body to elicit a few sharp grunts as he pressed for every inch that he could before finally releasing one paw and letting the metal cap slam back down into the ground with a resounding thump. Immediately afterwards the other paw jumped back in to grab further down the length of the pole, holding it with the tip still stuffed into the ground to try and stem the vibrations crawling downt he length of the shaft.

The last thing he wanted to do was to have Ball see the squirrel fall for exactly the same problems as his own student. With his jaw set and eyes firm, he waited out the storm of shakes until he could comfortably lift the pole again with loose paws and a smile on his face. "The more time you spend around these things.. the more comfortable you become throwing them around.. the more pressure you get to work with. More pressure, the harder you can hit." With two metal caps, Arch didn't want to think how hard Ball was going to be hitting people when he brought up the energy and the competence to really begin swinging it. Before then, he at least wanted to land a few hits. Just so he had something to talk about later.

"Once you've tried that a few times, take up your stance and see if you can knock aside a few of my little jabs." A sharp grin etched into the corners of his mouth. "Stability in a weapon like a pole is difficult, but not impossible. Besides, it's a good thing to close on." He didn't know about Ball, but the Pycon was feeling pretty blown-out after the coffee crash and the run through most of the castle, then the training.. he'd sleep well tonight, that was for sure.

"My Speaking" My Thoughts

Ball narrowed his one eye at the squirrel when he first questioned the pole ‘killing him’ Ball didn’t want to admit it but he was glad he didn’t have to make a reply as the squirrel kept going in this impromptu lesson of the newly acquired weapon of Ball’s.

“Small amounts of pressure?” Yet his question was answered as the squirrel kept talking and then demonstrated, bending and twisting the weapon around with his paws. It was an amazing sight to behold watching the flexible death tool so calm and yielding to the squirrel’s gripping. There was tension, Ball could see it visibly in both the weapon and the squirrel, but the squirrel was fair more capable of keeping the weapon in control…. Something Ball knew he needed to work on. So after that one last demonstration Archailist returned the weapon to Ball and the shorter of the two pycons stared at it like it was something he wasn’t sure he wanted to keep a hold of.

Gripping the weapon though he brought the pole close to his body, almost as if he wanted to hug it and make it go rigid with his body. Yet as the weapon bent in a smooth and gentle arc downward all shifted the hand hold on the weapon and the weapon snapped rigid again, relaxing the grip slightly forced the weapon’s bend to go upward and Ball had to shift his hand and the pole’s position slightly so it would dip down and straighten out again. The tension in his arm was getting to be quite painful and Ball had to slide his other hand across the width of his bean shaped body and take hold of the weapon. The tension that was started when his second hand wrapped around it caused Ball to shift both hands and weapon from his body so it swung out before him, between the two clay men, and spread his hands out slightly further than body width apart. A shift in his right hand twisting so the fingers became visible and still pointing down straightened out half the pole, a lighter grip with his left straightened up the other half.

Breathing in short intakes and slow agonizing exhales Ball allowed his body to get use to holding the tension within his weapon. With every bowing of one side or another Ball twisted the hand closer to it, yet something was different and off… Each minute shift of hand grip and posture added tension to the opposite side. Right-left, left-right – it just wasn’t making sense…

Lets trying something the next time this tension goes screwy. As he thought this the pole bowed hard on the right hand side and Ball grimaced, his right hand started to shift to compensate, but he stopped his original game plan before too much occurred and the pycon used his left to compensate, shifting his hand out towards the end more and forcing both pole and his right arm to extend out to the right. This shift in hand positioning and posture of his body caused the bow to snap up straight and then relax completely into a natural curve at the one end without much in the way of tension and therefore wasn’t ready to break the holder into many little clay bits.

My Words | Your Words | My Thoughts

It looked like Ball was really getting the hang of it; of course that was no short surprise considering who was teaching. They'd started out a little awkward.. and admittedly it wasn't getting much better for the first few chimes, but trial and error paved the way for final success in taming the flexible pole and its erratic movements. "There you go." It was a start, something that paved the way for a lot more practice.. and there would have to be lots more, that was absolutely certain. "Keep trying that. Stretch it and relax it, get a feel for the weapon. Don't overdo it, just tug it a little bit left and right, just as you were doing before, and then let it relax again. Let yourself become accommodated to it, until it's a comfortable movement."

There was no need for demonstrations this time, the other Pycon looked like he was getting the hang of it. "The best thing to do is take some time out of your training every now and then and just practice doing this. Whenever you feel comfortable with it, try adding a little more pressure and don't be discouraged if it doesn't always work out." Ahh, if Pycons could bruise.. alas, a good day of practice would often involve a lot of dents back when he was first learning how to use the weapon. Now, it wasn't so bad.. there were occasional slips when he tried to work with too much pressure, or swung too quickly and ended up with the weapon spinning around and thwacking back against his back or side.. but at least they were becoming less frequent.

"Just keep remembering to let the tension fall out of it again after every stretch. Bring both paws out as far as you can reach to the opposite ends to calm it. If you try to move down to one end only.. well, you're going to end up with the other one swinging around and hitting you." He picked out his own pole and chuckled as he purposefully did just that to explain what he meant.

Slipping one paw to either end of the long pole, all the way to the ends by bending it down the middle and leaving a very taut arch jutting out around chest-level, he tried to release the pressure by sliding one paw down the entire length and towards the opposite. All the tension built up in a smaller space the further he pulled down.. until it all released as they touched, causing the tip to wobble and spring around like a coiled whip suddenly released, threatening to sweep anyone within its reach off the ground entirely. It went so far that it doubled back on itself and knocked Arch off his feet as well. Good thing he had a tail to catch him, after quickly flattening down the tip so that he could balance on it at least.

"Haha, see?" Perhaps if Arch had a better grasp of the pole, he'd be able to try and control it.. but he dare not now. Not when Ball was there, partially to stop himself looking like a fool in front of the fellow Pycon.. and partially because if anything went bad with a pole, the thing posed a danger not just to the holder, but likely everyone else in close distance if it managed to get out of the wielder's hands. In this case, paws. A little like what he'd heard overgiving was like, funnily enough.. though he'd never heard of overgiving that could poke a man's eye out.
