Prepare for Judgement

Summer, 11th, 515

Wasting time was for people who had too much of it. Mordrion did not. He had already wasted enough time walking from the harbor to the actual citadel. He had grabbed hold of the first golem he could find and asked for information. Where do I go to get request items? The golem hadn't even turned its head to him. He had ignored it equally. If the golem wouldn't respond then one of the many people around would. And so he had moved about, approaching people who weren't busy doing anything important which was almost all of them since anyone that didn't look like they were actually doing research or experiments fit the not-busy bill.

Finally someone had been kind enough to explain him where the Syncho-something office was, where people could put in requests for their projects and materials. He had jumped right on that. The office was busy with both the living and the dead moving about filling in forms for their requests. Mordrion observed for a moment, watching as people moved to tall drawers in one end of the room and picking up empty forms before filling them in and dropping them off at a desk at the back of the room. Seemed easy enough.

Mordrion walked to the drawers and looked at the presented forms. One was a request form for materials which, after reading, seemed off limits to visitors as it required master permission and project details. He had neither of those. He checked the other file to see it was a merchant form, as in buying and selling stuff. That sounded more like what he, an outsider for now, needed. He picked one up and moved to an open space at one of the open writing desks. Taking the quill from the desk and dipping it in ink, Mordrion started writing his request down.

Before finishing, he took off his backpack and rummaged through it. Where was it? Ah, there we go. He fished out a scroll and unrolled it on the desk. There were several columns of text next to each other all about Sahova. Whatever information he learned from the Zeltivan libraries was collected here. At least the interesting and important parts. There was a general section on the history to start off with but as the scroll unrolled further more detailed and specific passages of text were written down. Mordrion stopped at the section on the creatures of Sahova.

He quickly ran his finger over the text as he mumbled some of the words from the text as he read it in his mind. Gibbat Dog... No, that's for later. Lemekor, dangerous, dangerous. Excellent sight, good. Ah, here. Soul snail. Let's see. Ghost like snails with see through bodies. That's one. The finger slid down the list of creatures and moved to the next column, unrolling the scroll further. Birds. Noktal and... Wyfrist. Semi translucent bodies with camouflage. That should mix well with the snails. Mordrion looked at the form, making sure he had spelled the names right on his request before putting the quill down and rolling the scroll back up.

Once the scrolls was safely put away again and the backpack on his back, Mordrion picked up his form and put it on the desk with the others. Now he would just have to wait for them to finish his request. Hopefully it wouldn't take too long. With that done, Mordrion left the office for the next step of his preparation. The boat trip to Sahova had been long enough for him to plan most of what would be needed before ever even arriving on the island.

Prepare for Judgement

Now, to find the way out of the citadel. As before, Mordrion wasn't shy enough or bothered enough to not approach people for information. He held up several people who dismissed him with glares, some with harsh words and some without even looking in his direction. Sahovan hospitality at it's best, huh? Finally, a seemingly more living apprentice was kind enough to point him in the right direction. Would it really hurt to put up some signs? The exit of the citadel led right into a large open plain stretching out before him.

In the distance he could see the edge of forests, hills and mountains. The prairie stretched out before him. Before setting out, Mordrion knelt down and checked his backpack. Water, check. Food, check. Dried meat, check. He pulled out the scroll once more and rolled it out to the fauna section. This time he didn't look for the snails or the birds but remained on the first entry. Gibbat dogs. Small, dog like creature with soft fur. Very dog like in nature. Four eyes, big ears, red colors for males, black for females. Excellent night vision, Excellent hearing. Relaxed around humans and nuits. Let's hope so. Found in the woods but come out into the prairie during the day.

Rolling the scroll back up, Mordrion put it away and lifted the backpack up on his shoulders. Taking a quick look up at the sun to determine the relative time, he set out onto the plain. His sword at his side and his shield loosely and within reach on his backpack, just in case he would run into trouble. Under the Sahovan sun, he set out towards the forest in the distance. The walk was uneventful for the first half and give Mordrion time to go over his plans again and again. First he had to gather the resources and ingredients for his judgement to make sure he had to very best to offer. Then he would have to apprentice to someone for fourty days, something he was and wasn't looking forward to. And then he would become a wizard.

What felt like halfway to the forest, Mordrion crossed paths with another person. When he spotted him somewhat to his right, Mordrion changed his course to cross with the other person. It never hurt to ask for directions even if you could see where you were going. He waved when he got close to the man. The person he met, however, was far from helpful. He seemed irritated that Mordrion would approach him. But irritation had never stopped Mordrion before. "Would that be the Forest of Thorns?" Mordrion said without any introduction as he pointed towards the forest in the distance.

The man seemed to hold no interest in Mordrion. As Mordrion waited, his hand still stretched out towards the forest, he could almost see how the man was deciding to answer or not. After a moment he simply nodded and turned to continue his own journey. "Lovely, thanks." Mordrion muttered as he headed off in his own direction. Sahovan hospitality existed even out here. Under the sun, Mordrion continued his journey. So far, uneventful had been good for him.

When he finally reached the edge of the forest, Mordrion was impressed with what he saw. It did look like a forest but it was dense, almost wrapped up entirely in thorns everywhere. Forest of Thorns indeed. Where are the dogs? Mordrion looked around to see if he could spot any flashes of red between the bushes and thorns. Nothing. Not unexpected for wild animals, even if they were supposed to like humans. Mordrion took of his backpack and pulled out the dried meat from his rations. Taking one piece, he put it down on the ground, roughly a step away from the nearest thorn covered tree.

From there he took five more steps and put down two pieces of meat. Another five steps and he placed two more pieces. With one last step, Mordrion moved away from the meat and sat himself down, forming one roughly straight line between him and the pieces of meat. He sat his backpack down next to him, resting it on the dry ground of the prairie. His sword and shield were put down next to him, well within range. Now all he had to do was wait for results. The worst kind of waiting.

Prepare for Judgement

Postby Mordrion on July 11th, 2015, 5:00 am

To pass the time, Mordrion opened his backpack and pulled out the scroll he had consulted already twice today. He rolled it out to the same section and, using his crossed legs as a table, he started going over his notes from Zeltiva. It had been a long process to put everything together. First he had searched the libraries for relevant books, cross checked with each other and put their information together as he could. Everything he found interesting or that was connected to his, then, future stay here or to his magical disciplines was noted down, history, geography, rumors, inhabitants, judgement, golems, ...

Once he had gone through all the book she had started spending time, much to his own horror, with the sailors who frequented the island to hear their stories. This had been the most expensive part of his research. He had never bought so much alcohol for other people. Combined with his notes and what he had read, the stories of the sailors helped to form a more realistic view of the island. It became quite clear how things worked at the entrance of the island but deeper in, there was very little information to be found. Most returning adventurers wouldn't say whether they returned from their business or if they had failed their judgement.

But now he had completed his research with what had been available and, until he could get into the rumored Great Library, it was all he had. He stopped opening the scroll at the fauna section and started reading, pausing after every few sentences to glance up at the pieces of dried meat he had placed. Gibbat Dog. Created on Sahova, only found on Sahova. Travels in packs for protection under a single alpha male. Small dog like creatures with long fur. Communicates through barking and physical motions with their tail or ears. Unique: Four eyes, large ears, long red tails for males. Excellent sight and hearing.

Mordrion picked up the more interesting parts from the text with ease. He had read it so many times before he had lost count. The trip to Sahova had been long and boring so the scroll and notes he had taken with him had proven a good way to pass the time. And yet he found that rereading his research remained interesting, motivating him over and over again when he read it. He glanced up from his notes yet again and saw a flash of red along the edge of the forest. There you are.

Mordrion rolled the scroll up once more and set it aside, focusing his eyes on the forest edge. The flash of red passed by again and he tried to follow it until it disappeared once more. The red streak appeared several times more before, finally, Mordrion could see two large ears peeking out from behind a thorny bush, followed by four eyes. The fluffy face of a small dog with big, pointy ears, looked at him and Mordrion looked back, sitting as still as he could. The Sahovan sun continued to beam down on him as he raised his hand slowly. "Hello there, little one."

Prepare for Judgement

Postby Mordrion on July 11th, 2015, 10:30 am

At the sound of his voice, the little Gibbat dog perked its ears and looked towards Mordrion. He moved his hand slowly, waving the creature closer. "Come here, little one." Behind the mask, Mordrion smiled. Curious but also wary, the little dog stepped from behind the thorny bush but remained close to it, ready to jump back if needed. Mordrion waited, smiling, humming and talking to the creature. He made sure to keep his voice low but loud enough for the dog to hear him. "Aren't you cute." "Look at all that red, what a proud one you are."

Being naturally used to the presence of humans and possibly the sound of Mordrion's voice brought the creature out forward a little. It smelled the air and looked towards the first piece of dried meat and to Mordrion. "Yes, it's for you." The dog took a step forward and Mordrion stopped moving, waiting. The little Gibbat jumped forward, crossing the one step distance to the meat, bit down on it and jumped back into the thorns, disappearing. "So hungry." Mordrion called towards the bushes.

For a while there was no movement or motion from the thorns. Mordrion took that time to scout his surroundings making sure no other people were heading towards him or even near. Or that none of those experiments were about to kill him. The prairie remained calm around him. The sound of rustling leaves drew his attention forward again. A pair of large ears and four eyes were regarding him curiously. "Hello there, little one." Mordrion smiled at the little Gibbat. He had no idea if it was the same one as before or a different one wanting some of that delicious meat.

Turning to his side slowly, Mordrion opened his pack and pulled out the dried meat wrapped up to keep it from staining the other belongings in his backpack. He cut off a small piece of meat and molded it in his hand, squeezing it and making sure that he got his scent on it. With a careful toss, he launched the meat more or less towards where the second piece was lying. The furry dog jumped back and away but quickly returned when it noticed nothing else happened after the suddenly something fell so close to him.

The Gibbat came out of the thorns and looked around, curious but cautious. Smart. Mordrion waited, still as he could be. The Gibbat started to move slowly onto the plain, out of the bush, like it had done before but this time more than just the one step. The meat was further out now and Mordrion watched as the furry creature moved out into the open, its ears perked up and moving from side to side as it picked up the sounds only it could hear with that kind of hearing.

Its sniffed the meat for a bit before taking it in its jaws, chewing it as it looked at Mordrion. Mordrion looked back and smiled. "You like that? It's delicious." Mordrion moved his hand, waving at the creature. It didn't run away this time, more curious than cautious now. Mordrion slowly started to cut another small piece of meat from his supply as he waited for the Gibbat to finish his portion. When he was done, Mordrion molded the next piece of meat as he had done before.

When he was finished, Mordrion tossed the piece forward, aiming it in between the second piece, which had been finished, and the last remaining piece one step away from him. The Gibbat jumped back but didn't run and hide like before. It just sniffed the air and snuck closer. It's attention was fully on the large human sitting in front of him as it approached the meat. "That's nice. Don't be scared. "

Not knowing what else he could say besides repeating 'good' and 'nice' over and over again, he started to hum a tune, something that vaguely felt like home, a long time ago. He cut another small piece of meat and molded it before tossing it, two steps away from him, one step from the last, larger, piece. The Gibbat moved closer and picked up the meat, pulling parts off of it with its teeth as it kept the rest under wraps with its claws. Mordrion simply sat and watched, cutting the last piece he would hopefully need today.

This time, he didn't toss it but held it out in his open hand. He leaned forward, placing his hand on the ground as far forward as he could, the palm upwards with the meat in it. Hopefully it doesn't bite. "Here you go. It's delicious." The Gibbat regarded him as if he understood completely. But it was still wary, staying back and looking, observing him from all angles as it moved left and right but didn't come any closer yet.

"No need to be so cautious. It's delicious meat. Yum yum." Mordrion leaned forward a bit more, feeling his back stretch and cracking. We're not that old yet, friend. Mordrion smiled behind his mask and waited, holding his hand still and trying to breathe as slowly as possible. He kept his eyes on the creature but did his best to avoid direct eye contact. That was generally a challenge in the animal world. Since the Gibbat was part dog, Mordrion assumed it felt the same way as its ancestor.

Mordrion had no idea how much time had passed already while he had been negotiating with this little one but he was getting very close now. The Gibbat stepped forward and sniffed the air before taking another slow step forward. Mordrion watched as the Gibbat pressed its nose against his fingertips, the cool touch of its nose felt very dog like. Mordrion smiled but held still. If he got impatient now it would ruin a whole morning of work. Another wet nose touch to his fingertips and then it moved closer and tried to take the piece of meat from Mordrion's hand, missing it.

The Gibbat jumped back and Mordrion startled, pulling his hand back slightly, causing the creature to jump back even more. Mordrion quickly controlled himself and waited, smiling. His cheeks were starting to hurt from all the smiling. "It's ok. Don't worry. It's just my hand, don't worry." Mordrion kept talking, quietly, saying the same things over and over again. Don't worry. Nice. Good. Little One. And various mixes of those. Slowly but surely the Gibbat got closer again, drawn in by its curiosity and the meat still in Mordrion's hand.

As it moved closer, Mordrion slowly sat up straight again, stretching his back. He took the meat between his fingers, holding it out as he put his other hand out as well, waiting with open palms. The Gibbat sniffed and looked and considered. And then it stepped forward a bit more, sniffing more and looking left and right, its ears perking up and pointing. And then it moved in, trying to bite the piece of meat. Mordrion made sure he held on. At first there was a bit of tugging but once the creature decided it could simply eat the meat as it was, it calmed down.

Mordrion slowly moved his free hand closer and touched the tips of the creatures fur. It moved its head to face the new sensation and growled at Mordrion's free hand. "Don't worry. It's ok. It's just my hand. See." Mordrion brought one finger forward and held it in front of the creature. It sniffed the air and pressed its nose against his fingertips. Mordrion pressed back and moved a second finger in, stroking the fur on its nose. Satisfied the new sensation wasn't bad, the Gibbat focused back on the meat and Mordrion touched the side of its face lightly stroking its fur.

He pushed a bit further and pressed his full hand against the creatures side, stroking its fur softly. The meat was finished and Mordrion held his other hand out for the creature to sniff and lick the remaining meat taste off. With his stroking hand, Mordrion started to tickle the Gibbat behind its ear, hoping for the same reaction as a dog would. The creature pressed its head against Mordrion's hand. Going from one hand to the other, the Gibbat enjoyed the attention it was getting now that it had enjoyed its meal fully. There was some satisfied nose licking and a bit of ear scratching with its hind paw as Mordrion continued to lightly stroke it where he could.

Once he felt like the creature had gotten used enough to Mordrion's touch, he moved both hands in at the same, stroking its back and head. "Well, time to go, little one." Mordrion said. With a quick motion he moved his hands, the one on the Gibbat's back grabbing hold of the creature and holding it in place while his other hand moved to grab hold of the creatures head. With a quick and decisive move, he turned the head around. There was a sickly cracking sound as its neck broke and Mordrion felt the creature go limp in his grasp. "On to the interesting part." Mordrion packed up his belongings putting everything back where it belonged, with his bounty dangling from one of the many strings hanging from the outside of his backpack, and started on his trek back to the citadel.
