Eighty-fourth of Winter, 515 AV

Even the cool air felt odd that day. Theo hadn’t had a day to himself in what seemed like ages. The personal days that Theo had claimed he had always found himself following someone else's direction. It wasn’t the same, even if the commands coincided with what he wanted. Theo’s heart always craved it, what it was he couldn’t tell, but being able to choose, really choose, how he spent his day felt close to it.

So he took the day truly to himself, it hadn't occurred to him he did it out of spite. Squires were supposed to spend their free time growing accustomed to the duties and endurements of knighthood whichever way they could. Not Theo. He felt ashamed at his curiosity of the upper heights of knighthood or knighthood itself, the only appeal it ever had to him was power. Sick power, he wanted the things his superiors had. It was now Theo realized that these thoughts had put him in subtle competition with his compatriots, even Lester, the knight who elevated him to squirehood and saved him poverty.

Such thoughts were sickening. Freedom from the anxiety of structure was all Theo wanted, but could he take that step? He kicked the dirty snow and the packed white hardly budged. If he was to change things for others, make other realize the faults of this loss of freedom, if he even could, it would be hard doing it in a suit of loaned armor.

Looking up, the sky was all full of clouds and gray-white. Where Syna tried to shine through only she knew, it was impossible to tell the time of day. Despite that, the trees offered hope as they began to show their trunks. No leaves grew yet, but any hopeful soul knew it was only a matter of time. Theo had half a mind to invite Rielly out there, but she was caught up in knightly politics in her own way as well. Best to spend the day alone, searching the frozen wastes for a piece of sanity.

But the day wouldn’t let that be. Down the ill-beaten path off the south road Theo heard footsteps. His ears may not have been keen with his mind in his thoughts, but it was the fast feet of the walker that caught his attention. Upon turning, Theo could see a woman ill dressed for Winter coming towards him at an alarming rate.

“Stop! Who are you?” Theo questioned when he saw the short blade in the woman’s hand.

She kept pushing. No words.

It was as she closed the distance Theo instinctively began to draw his res. He had quite a few moments between her approach, and Theo pooled the res into an orb the third the size of his palm. Theo held the orb in the air in front of him to an astonishing lack of reaction.

“Stop or I’ll use it.” Words like those felt empty, despite whatever truth they held then. In both of their minds they had their own idea of how it was supposed to end. And so Theo lit the ball aflame and cast it at his threatening rival. His platemail was hardly any reason to be cautious, he thought, a blade in the right spot meant his end despite the rest of the bulky steel.

The woman, however, was seemingly unphased and merely sidestepped the bolt, not even stopping her slow, foreboding walk. It was now Theo wished he had more skill in his magic, but wishing was pointless.

The next item in Theo’s arsenal was his rope dart. He had no experience with the dart and chain, but Theo was pulling out his last stops for his fearless target. Unfamiliar even with its use, Theo grabbed the blade and chain that hung from his hip, holding the end of the chain out with his left. Using his right, Theo threw the dart overhand at his now foe once, twice, and three times, all to no avail. The first fell to air, and the second deflected with a swipe of her short blade. The third, Theo thought he might of had a chance to catch her in the legs and sweep her, but then he remembered the point and chain was only sixteen feet long.

She was within sixteen feet.

Quickly hurrying his sword, Theo stood one foot forward as he gripped the cold iron’s leather grip. When she was about five feet away, the lady charged. Theo could see her now, she had blonde hair that hid piercing eyes of blue. She bellowed out as she rushed Theo. A quick strike over the top was customary for a charging warrior, and Theo twisted his grip and crossed the blade sideways, catching the blade over his head.

She came off the recoil and tried to swipe at Theo’s side, more towards his wrist. Theo raised his grip and twisted to point the swords down towards the ground, pushing back to not yield to the strength of the blow. Steel rang again and Theo held true a consecutive time.

The two ejected from the clasp, the female jumping backwards. Theo looked past her and into her soul, a squint straining his brow. Her hair was dirty in color, straight down to her bosom, and was cat-fur fine. One eye saw him clean, the other she peered through a break in the streaks at Theo, holding her short sword out with one hand just under her chin. Light freckles dotted her face, and her long sleeve brown tunic would of had her mistaken for any other peasant, just not this time of year.

Theo’s opponent began to sidestep, and the two eventually found themselves in a duelist's dance around a patch of snow. Theo made a conscious act not to put one foot in front of the other, rather keeping them parallel at most. It was bad nature to cross ones body in battle, it rendered you immediately vulnerable in any combat situation. This was most likely his opponent’s precise ploy. Then she stopped, as well as Theo.

“Do I get a name at least, miss?” Theo smiled, trying to extend some battlefield honor.

She rejected Theo’s middle ground, and charged in, slashing at Theo’s blade with both hands. The young squire caught the strike, but his might did not come quick enough. The short sworded fighter quickly drove down to Theo’s crossguard and stripped him of the blade, sending it sliding off on the smooth snow of the woods.

Thinking quickly, Theo, inexperienced as he was, grabbed the woman’s sword arm. She immediately grabbed his wrist, and twisted it a little past straight, sweeping Theo’s legs. The ground slipped out from under him, and Theo was knocked onto his bottom. He had been beaten.

Her face still and stoic and stern. The warrior placed her sword in her scabbard. Plate armor had slits under the arms, and she grabbed Theo by them and tossed him into a nearby tree. The armor clanked heavily against the wood, Theo’s head banging around the inside of his helmet. Gauntlets had holes in the leather cut for reimancers of the Syliran Order, and Theo felt the cold snow under his hands as he straightened himself out to sit upright against the tree.

She closed until there was just a few feet between the two. “You.. I can’t believe how far you’ve fallen. To think, I used to come to you with questions on swordsmanship. You were so young and so full of skill, an inspiration to us all.” She frowned, the first expression she let on her face. “A true show of raw power, now look at you, you can hardly even grip that blade.” Her face reset back to the same sober, hard gaze. “Don’t worry, we’ll bring it all back, Re---”

Theo had prepared a res ball during her speech, and quickly lit the whole thing on fire. As he tossed it at her, the woman caught the whole ball of fire and stalled it in mid air, gravitating it towards her and revealing her own ball of res in her non-sword arm. She lit the ball with the fire and cast it away.

“See, even your mind is weak. You’re nothing of who you were. We were ready to follow you, and now this. We’ve tried to put you on the path, but look what you’ve done. A squire of that petty order. Their laws, their codes of honor, perhaps that’s why your sword arm fails you: You’ve spent too much time following orders, but no---”

Underneath Theo’s hand he felt a rock as he shuffled around, quickly he raised it and threw it at the rambling woman. She ducked under the rock, but it was enough of a window for Theo to get on his feet. He got running as fast as he could, his intent to get as far away as possible without collapsing. Looking behind him, he could see his cold iron blade resting, sinking in the white. Theo snatched his blade off the ground and kept on running. No footsteps came to follow, however, and Theo turned to find this woman.

“Son of a petching whore! I’ll find you! There’s no running.” The trees blurred Theo’s vision of her, and Theo quickly hid behind the nearest, thickest tree trunk he could.

His breath was really starting to wear thin. Theo hadn’t fought an opponent so fierce in what he could remember. Maybe some of his sparring partners were better martialists, but she fought with such fierceness, such desire and anger, no knight Theo had seen matched that with their control of weaponry. The visceral nature of her strikes was more than a worry, it was a tale of the men she had fallen in battle with her blade. Such confidence and control of anger wasn’t taught, but it had to be learned.

“I’m just supposed to bring you in, but do you think I won’t do more? But go on, play… You’ve made up my mind now.” Theo could hear her, the voice was slowly drawing closer so he tried to still his own breath. “Lumin’ll have a good laugh at this. You, hiding, who’d a thought?” The breaks between footsteps grew shorter, a tone of agitation now hung in her voice. Theo could tell she at least had him localized by now, and was worried she’d find him sooner rather than later. “And you do such a horrible job hiding. ‘If you’re doing something wrong, cover your tracks.’ What about covering your tracks, what if you do that wrong?”

The snow being packed under her feet was drawing nearer, and Theo was still not all the way recovered from his sprint. But then the sounds went away, Theo listened as close as he could and couldn’t detect not even the slightest sound. The wind blew by with force. When it settled the air hung with tension, waiting for vibration.

Not a sound.

“Gotcha’!” Theo turned to his left and there she was, a sly smile hanging on her face. His heart nearly jumped out of his throat, but it settled back down to fill the vacuum a stiff kick left in his side. Theo propelled the opposite way as her. His feet slipped on the slick snow a few times, but somehow Theo managed to keep his balance.

“Raaagh!” She cried out. Theo raised his guard immediately, the longsword hanging diagonally in front of him. Her strike aimed right for the blade. Theo met her with all his might. Knowing he couldn’t sustain this battle, Theo kept up the guard hoping to make a move, but then he looked in her eye. All that hung in her face was rage, not flush red and pouty like a steamy disagreement, but still and cold with dots for pupils. She saw past the guard, Theo could see, she wanted to break it. Maybe it was pride, maybe it was spite, but Theo could tell she wanted to out muscle him here.

Rather than participate in his opponent’s proving, Theo wanted to fight smart. A swift kick was returned to her, this one directly in her shin. As she buckled Theo immediately swung out for her sword arm, and she reacted quickly and caught the blade with her own hilt. Unbraced at the feet, her arm failed her and the blade was sent spiraling to the side of the fight. Fearful of this woman’s magical ability, Theo choose not to stick around and fled again.

He ran fast as he could. Whipping past the trees, Theo would not make the same mistake twice. He wouldn’t stop running because he couldn’t hear her, he would stop running because he was ready to collapse. The trees of The Bronzewoods consumed him, he had no idea where in the woods he was now, the forest becoming one. Theo didn’t care, he was just thankful to have some space between that madwoman.

What had he done to deserve this? Who was this woman, and who was Lumin for that matter? Why did he want Theo? Why would Theo, a lowly squire, garner all this attention?

And then it hit him: He couldn’t reason it out. He didn’t have all the pieces. Even just this morning Theo had tried to reflect as his fellows spit about their pasts, nothing. Not even the briefest glimpse into a childhood. The fondness of a mother’s caress rang no bells in the halls of Theo’s mind, nor did a father’s teachings of duty correlate with any emotion in him. It all felt so empty when he searched, and perhaps he knew why now.

Theo stopped and took a swing at the nearest tree, “Damn it!” The blade rung and vibrated as his voice echoed through the forest. His teeth bit his lip and he squinted hard at the tree as if it had harmed him. Trickery, even Walden, it must have all been lies. “Why? Why me?”

Theo’s bitterness was becoming sweltering frustration. Tears were beginning to fill his eyes when Theo realized that he still had a pursuer to deal with. “...To deal with,” Theo repeated his thoughts. “No more running.” He looked down at his feet and saw a whole trail of tracks leading to right where he stood, Theo smiled.

Theo looked out at the dissolving wonderland, no one was in sight. “Good, I still have time to prepare.”

Peering deep into his own mind, Theo tried to remember the teachings he had in swordsmanship. He knew his opponent favored a short blade, and she was a mage of some power, probably more powerful than himself. Thinking now to instructions and spars of the past, he tried to craft a battle plan. A short blade meant that Theo had the advantage at length, and he should keep his distance so she would not again have a chance to gain leverage on Theo.

And then he had a thought, what if this girl wasn’t primarily a martial fighter? It certainly seemed so, what kind of warrior fought primarily with a short blade? He knew none. This woman, whoever she was, was most likely a mage by practice, swords were a side gig. Theo grinned, “I coulda' beat her right there, stabbed her straight up if I wasn’t so scared. Shame on me, the fights coming to her now.”

Theo held his blade out, one swipe crossways, followed up by an upwards diagonal strike, and a heavy blow over the head to finish it off. Theo twirled his blade, rotating it in his hands. Theo stabbed and kicked a tree, coming down over the top of the right. He quickly turned and fed the air a diagonal strike, and once more through the same spot. Stab stab stab, swipe swipe swipe, and a strong hit always followed the combos through. He was going to win this fight.

Down the pathway his trail led he still couldn’t see her. Theo engaged in the next phase of his budding plan: Prepare a far superior amount of res for his foe then the last one he hit her with. The cold iron blade was stabbed into the ground. The palms of reimancers leaked the green res that flowed from their djed, and Theo began to pour out the mightiest amount he possibly could.

The res swirled from both his hands, swirling and twisting as it began to form an orb in the air in front of him. Theo watched both the res form and the path before him. Res continued to form and Theo kept in his mind the thought of overgiving, but he did need a significant amount if he was actually going to do some real damage to this girl. The res continued to pour in and it was beginning to grow to the size of his palm after several moments of slow accumulation.

Theo widened his hands and the res kept up with the new distance like slow tethers. It was one of the largest that he had ever crafted, the res ball that was. “Maybe I can just end her with this,” Theo thought aloud, “I’d love to see her bu--- no, no, no.” Theo stopped the pooling immediately. “That’s wishful thinking, or worse.” He didn’t know much of overgiving, but the thought that he could end what he thought was a superior mage's life with magic itself was clearly in line with those corrupting thoughts overgivers had

And then, perhaps at the perfect moment, she appeared through the gray of the forest. The slow walk seemed fixed in her motion now, but she looked disgruntled now. Theo quickly hid his ball of res, which was now a little bigger than the size of his palm, behind the tree he stood next to, making sure it was still within his control.

“So you finally decided to show up, eh?”

She laughed, “I thought you had run all the way back to Syliras, squire. But you’ve decided to fight, that’s a little more like you. I’m happy, now we can settle this the way we were meant to. Either I haul you out, or... or you win. Gods know what you’ll do now.” As she trotted slowly forward Theo could see the short sword dangling from her grip.

Theo lifted his own blade out of the snow covered dirt. “I can do this.” He muttered to himself. Raising his blade up to guard, Theo looked dead on his opponent. He refreshed quickly his course of action: Hit her with the firebolt when she was too close to dodge, and then try to keep his distance while he tried to break her guard and land a felling blow. He had the stronger weapon at the very least, even if he didn’t match her skill as a weapon, and he had plate armor and she did not She fought with anger, Theo would meet her with strategy, skill, and a little luck of circumstance.

The blade held still in the air, Theo waiting for his opponent to draw closer so he could finally initiate his plot.

“Does the name Jay ring a bell?” She asked. It did. It hurled some type of emotion Theo’s way, but his flurry of thoughts was too too hurried to process the words.

She stopped in her tracks again, as she had before, to talk. “She’s gone, took care of that. Too many loose ends, too much room for loss. The girl you loved is gone. ‘Follow your heart always’, what a load of shyke that was.”

“Follow your heart always” was the quote on the locket Lester had received by mail. The note had been from a J.M., Jay must have been the person who had written the note itself, and judging by the sound of it, she was long gone. Theo had loved her though, this woman suggested, and even though he knew nothing of the girl his heart was still moved slightly. The mind of Theo wandered, if only it weren’t for the intent he had on his surprise res, he might of lost focus on the severity of the issue entirely. The magic checked Theo back to the tangible, real world he knew, and with that came the battle and the intensity of the moment.

“Eh, what am I talking for anyway? You can’t remember a god damned thing. Maybe this’ll jog your memory!” She flung a larger than pebble-sized ball of fire at Theo, apparently one she had been storing in her hand, and charged in.

Theo was ready to counter. His long-awaited res ball emerged from its hiding and drew the fire in. The ball ignited in a near instant fashion and was thrown at Theo’s foe, who was now in a dead sprint. The woman tried to spiral out of the way of the ball, but it caught her on the arm, igniting her tunic. “Petchin---!” She quickly patted down her tunic, which was, even if it was cold outside, well on fire. Theo’s foe screamed as she beat herself and the fire. When she was finally done, Theo could see that the tunic was burned at the sleeve he had struck, revealing blackened skin.

Theo laughed, “Didn’t work out the way you thought, huh? 'No rest for the wicked', they say.” Theo met her while she patted down her fresh wound, stopping outside her range and within his own. A flurry of light blows followed, and the girl had to leave some live embers on her sleeve to meet the strikes. One after the other, the sound of steel on steel rang thrice times in the air, and then another three times as Theo gave her all he could.

She jumped back, and ripped her dangling sleeve clean off, completely exposing her right, non dominant arm. The embers still burning met the ground with a sizzle. Across the girls lips were her own teeth and a struggle to hold her anger.

“I… I knew you were tough. I just thought you’d… I just thought you’d have lost your touch. I should have never doubted you.” She said, her tone more disheartened than Theo had come to know. The two stopped. Despite Theo’s acknowledgment of her seeming lack of honor, he appreciated her will to survive. He let her gather herself as it was the right thing to do.

When his foe finally had her guard raised, Theo charged in and tried to land his blows yet again. Yet again she met the blows. One across the side, quickly he struck up from the side yet again, and then one brutal blow over the top. She met the final blow and had an opening for a parry, but Theo used his distance to disallow the opportunity.

Now he struck her twice, once from both sides, and she used her blade to glance the blows off in a diagonal arch. Steel rang through the harrowing winds of The Bronzewoods. Theo was not the strongest swordsman, but he knew as long as this girl was weakened and on the defensive he held the advantage. So he pressed. The girl backed up trying to avoid the blade strikes, perhaps trying to find room for a breath, but Theo ran hot and tried to press the issue and force her into a mistake.

The woman, however, was turning every single blow he had, and Theo was getting tired trying to keep up the flurry of blows. Blows were slowing, and the look of determination in her face meant she either was well prepared, or knew it would only be a time until Theo broke.

And then Theo thought he had his break. One stab, followed by a slash, both of which were met by the girl’s defense, left an opening for a third stab. Theo felt the squishy piercing of skin just for a moment. A short blade quickly swept off the blade, and Theo, having his grip loosened by his own relief of victory, had the cold iron longsword swept clean from his hand.

His jaw was dropped, how could Theo have had his win taken from him so quickly?

She grabbed him by his helmet, “Thought you had me, squire?" She pressed him into the nearest tree. "Who do you think you are? I… I’m the superior of the two of us. You fell, no need to yield, knight, even the gods know you’ve failed here. And don’t worry, by the time we get to Lumin we’ll have had plenty of time to have made up for this, fool….” Her anger radiated in her voice, Theo could tell she was too caught in her own feeling to pay attention to much else.

Strapped to his left thigh was his assassin’s dagger, and Theo slowly reached for it, not that it mattered, in her mind she had won. He grabbed the blade and slowly began to lift it from the armor’s strapping.

“Why, look at this, how am I going to explain away the state of this tunic at the stables? You better start thinking if you value your life, if I decide you’re worth it. You brought out such vindication in me I might not let you make it to Lumin now, maybe I’ll just say I found you dead, frozen in the winter."

"Arrrgghhh! This stings so bad!” She clenched her shoulder with her other arm, rubbing the burn quickly before returning her grip to Theo’s face.

“Tell me what you have to say for yourself?”

Theo looked at the ground, then back at her and sighed, “I’m sorry.” Underneath her gaze Theo drove his assassin’s dagger into her stomach. Feeling the skin split and tear, he continued to push deeper as her mouth now dropped. Theo bit his lip now as he twisted the blade as it sunk into her insides. When he removed she struggled to cover the open wound with her hands.

Theo was about to leave her there to die, as he didn’t take any pleasure in death, when she spoke. “Say… Theo,” She laughed, “before you go, take this.” She held out a crumpled piece of paper and Theo grabbed it. Her hand lowered in a slow descent as she said her last words, “It’s just a job anyway, right?” Her hand hung in the air, and then collasped

Theo waited to see that she was absolutely still, and shut his former foes eyes, grabbed his sword off the ground, and went on his way. It seemed best to Theo that this woman again, whoever she was, was best not brought up around his compatriots. Knowing what he now did, he doubted that anyone would understand. Even he didn’t understand.

Theo followed his trail back, looking at the plated shoes prints. It wasn’t long until he found himself back on a beaten path that he recognized. A tree that grew in a corkscrew pattern pointed him in the right direction with his recognition, and Theo was headed home.

He looked down at his plate, and could see dried blood clinging to the steel. The snow acted like water in this scenario, and he wiped his platemail clean of any sign of conflict. He removed his dagger from the scabbard and did the same, choosing now to cut the straps off as they were already well stained. Unable to find a good hiding place for the blade that he couldn’t stab himself in, Theo almost tossed the blade, until he realized there was a similar holding strap on the opposite leg.

The woman’s note then begged Theo’s question, and he peered at the slightly crumpled paper:

“He goes by Theo now, so don’t tip him off otherwise, leave that to the more qualified. We just need you to bring him in. If he comes in willingly, great, but I doubt that’ll be the case. Do anything you must, don’t hurt him too bad though. You’ll get the usual arrangement and then some when you come back to the same meetup. Failure is not acceptable. - L.”

Theo was guessing “L” must have been Lumin, discreet as he was, wicked as well it seemed. It was just as he crumpled up the letter Theo could see a horse galloping its way up the horizon. Theo looked a long while before he could tell it was Lester! His long black hair hung from underneath his helmet, Theo could never mistake his look.

“Theo! Theo! Thank Sylir you’re okay! You will not believe this, but that notice that by which I commanded you to take leave by turned out to be inauthentic. Believe that! Tricksters in our ranks!” He seemed to smile from beneath his visor. “But by no matter, you’re here and fine. Off we must go! We have duties to attend to.” Lester reached his hand out to lift his squire to his mount, “Say, what happened to your leather strap on your right side?”

“Oh…” Theo was startled by the question, “it got hung up on a bush, Ser Lester. I planned to pay for the repairs.” He said, reaching up for Lester's hand

“It is no matter, just a point of curiosity... 'wanted to make sure you weren’t in any danger is all. We have numerous affairs to be make ready for now, as you know the new year is about in Syliras, and all of Mizahar for that matter. We can certainly expect the denizens to participate in the festivities of the turning of year. Even more we have numerous questing knights returning to enjoy the change of year, and we are expected to provide to them the most lavish of times upon their return. Squires are truly needed this time of year, even if it is to make dull preparations. I was foolish to believe such a prank.”

"A prank..." The squire knew whence the notice came from.

Theo had loved Lester dearly to this day, but now there was a certain thing that annoyed him about his patron. It was his obsession with the knighthood, the fact that Theo's hide seemed to only save him embarassment hurt Theo's heart. Theo trusted his motivation, but it also made him doubt the sincerity of his care in young Popcampio, and as they rode Theo wondered why he had previously confided so much in a man that so blatantly served the knighthood to a fault. There was no obvious concern about him as to what had drawn Theo outside the walls this time of year, let alone what he had done out there. Perhaps he assumed it was in Theo's nature, and he'd be right.

“Well enough of that, how was your stroll, Theo?” He finally asked.

“It was good,” until he was almost kidnapped or murdered, but he left that part out. Even though he was an aurist, Lester choose not to let Theo’s lack of speaking distract him. Theo thought the man merely ignored his cues of distance, but maybe he could not see them at all, or didn’t care to see them. Either way, Theo’s one obligation to the knighthood, the one to the man who earned his respect by offering him food and shelter, no longer seemed like an obligation. Theo was thankful, but why was he still here when he had a past that demanded attention?

It was coming soon, very soon. Theo was going to abandon the knighthood.

Combat: Running From Danger
Surviving A Kidnapping Attempt
Theo: Has Multiple Alias
Theo: Can't Remember The Past
Investigating A Lead

Loot:
+ Mysterious Note

Notes:
What a solid ending to this solo. Theo's pull from the order was a great character development point and I am excited to see what happens. My interest was super peaked when the note was revealed, and I have to say... I don't trust Lester (but maybe that's because his name starts with an L? lol) Maybe it's just me, but Theo didn't seem super surprised by the information, or concerned. If I was in his shoes, I would be losing my mind. lol

My only, or biggest complaint, was that I felt that some of the fighting (both with the sword, footwork, magic), seemed a bit... overplayed for character's level. It can be hard to write novice level scenes, but I really would have liked to seen Theo get roughed up a lot more or struggle with a faint touch of over giving. As a novice, he seemed to be doing fairly complex maneuvers and counter strikes, but overall, this was a delightful read.

As always, congrats on completing the weekend challenge and I hope you enjoy your grade. If I missed anything, message me. :)
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your grade, please send me a PM and I'll be happy to discuss it with you. Keep writing!
