Ronin remained mostly silent for the duration of the Endal's explanation about his relationship with his Wind Eagle. A unusually profound sense of envy overwhelmed Ronin as he pondered what it would be like to have such a bird. He often considered his falcons over the years to be his friends, but he had never had any sort of real communication with them. Yes, he spoke to them and they occasionally responded in strangely human ways, but he knew that it wasn't real. Falcons were beautiful creatures, but it was apparent that they didn't have the same emotions as people, even if they did have the same bad tempers. 'A Brother', Ronin liked the sound of that. The way Fois described it made Ronin feel as if that was what he had always been missing. For this Endal, his Wind Eagle was a source of inspiration and friendship. This was something that, to Ronin, would mean more than all the money and privileges of being an Endal. The fact that the Endal had posed a question to Ronin took him by surprise. Most Endals he had met seemed perfectly content to hear themselves speak. However, Fois did not seem like a usual Endal. Maybe it was just because Ronin had gotten to know him better than any other, but there still seemed to be something unique about him. Ronin choose his words carefully, not out of respect for the class of Endal, but out of respect for the man himself. "Hearing you speak about them, sir, I become very envious of you. I have always known that Wind Eagles are beautiful birds, but your apparent companionship with your mount is astounding." Ronin seemed a little sad yet hopeful in his demeanor. "To have such a relationship with a Wind Eagle is my greatest aspiration." Despite the fact that Ronin had just moments ago realized the extent of the relationship between Endal and Wind Eagle, it had in an instant become what he wanted most. This wasn't a large leap since he had always loved birds and that kind of companionship was what he had been seeking his entire life, but it was an entirely new direction for these feelings. Ronin was going to have a lot to think about when they got back to Wind Reach. When Ronin had finished speaking, the conversation went dead for a while, and he sat silently until Seeler arrived. Despite his hope for a ride back to Wind Reach, Ronin never would have asked. The offer alone was a bit of a surprise to him. However, he was enormously grateful. After getting on, he spent the rest of the trip in silence except to respond to anything Fois asked. |
