Dual Wield

From Mizahar Lore

Two is better than one.

Dual Wield is the ability for a fighter to utilize more than one weapon at a time, one in each hand. Dual Wield is a complimentary skill, meaning it needs a prerequisite in order to learn. Dual Wield requires that the person learning this skill have training in the weapon or weapons that they wish to Dual Wield. Thus, a fighter that wants to dual wield a set of long knives must have training in long knives (at least 30 pts) before learning to dual wield them. This is true for each weapon a person wants to dual wield (a long sword and an axe, together, both skills should be at least 30 points before beginning to learn dual wield). The training in dual wield (skill points earned) must never exceed the amount of training (skill points earned) in the weapon involved. For example, taking the long knife example again, a character must have at least 30 points of training in long knife to learn dual wield, and as each skill rises, the points invested in dual wield must always be equal or lesser to that invested in the weapon.

History

The Akalak, long before the Valterrian, perfected the art of dual wielding in their constant quest to master the martial arts they practice. Being subtle but very dangerous blademasters, they make the artform of dual wielding seem easy, when in fact it is a skill that takes intense training and very in-depth concentration. Being some of the most proficient fighters on Mizahar, the Akalak shared this knowledge with others or indeed gave others the idea to learn to master the art of using two weapons at once when they were observed fighting with their Akalakan blades.

Eypharians have also emphasized dual wielding in their culture. For an Eypharian, dual wielding is when one can manipulate both sides of their bodies at the same time. Initially, the skill is not acquired limb by limb, but side by side. When it comes to complex or quick gestures, arms tend to move in unison with the limbs on that side of the body. Since Eypharians are accustomed to using four to six limbs at once in everyday endeavors, they are not limited in the same way two-armed creatures are.

Like any practitioner of Dual wielding, though, Eypharians must work towards dexterity. A human uses both arms in conjunction, but it does not make him an immediate master in Dual wielding. The principle is the same for an Eypharian. Only with greater skill does an Eypharian reach a state where each arm can move independently from one another amidst complex forms.

The Eypharian style derives its foundations from the Akalak art, but tends to deal with smaller bladed weapons as opposed to swords. Swords tend to impede fluidity and speed. Eypharians who dual wield with anything larger than a short-sword are perceived as amateurs. The style's motions are fast and fluid, and highly regimented. Each attack and defense is methodically learned like the parts of a dance, and bears a descriptive title. A master of the style will know hundreds of these martial dances.

Prerequisite & Maintenance

The most important thing to understand about dual wielding is that one must thoroughly learn the weapon one wishes to dual wield. If that is a singular weapon, just doubled, like a set of long knives or short swords, then one must train and continuously train those short swords or long knives to keep the skill in those 'base weapons' increasing. If one wishes to dual wield two different weapons, then one must continuously train in both weapons, keeping the weapon skill proficiency at least equal or greater than that of the dual wield artform. The Dual Wield skill must never exceed the level of the weapon one dual wields.

Skill progression

Novice (1-25)
At this novice level, the dual wielder is awkward with his weapons. He is just learning the basic ability to hold both, but he tends to use first one, then the other, not acting in conjunction in a smooth unbroken way. As he rises in experience, the weapons will gradually start to synchronize and flow together more easily.
Competent (26-50)
Competent dual wielders are starting to use their weapons together, loosing the prominent hand verses the secondary hand and slowly moving into the aspect of acting in unison. (Add more info)
Expert (51-75)
At this stage, a dual wielder has perfected the art of using two weapons, moving them in unison and growing more confident in her artform. (Add more info)
Master (76-100)
The master has perfected using both his or her weapons as if they are actual limbs attached that he or she has had all their lives. Both weapons act as a one, defying logic and cleaving through substances that are often thought to be too hard for their blades. A Dual Wielder at this point knows no limitations and is at the apex of their skill. (Add more info)
