Flint Knapping

From Mizahar Lore

Jump to: navigation, search

Flint Knapping is the shaping of flint, chert, obsidian or other stone through the process of lithic reduction. Lithic reduction involves the use of a hammerstone (made of stone, wood, or antler) to detach flakes from a lump of tool stone called flint. As flakes are detached in sequence, the original mass of stone is reduced; hence the term for this process. The sharp flakes can be made into a variety of tools or roughed out as a blank for later refinement into a projectile point, knife, or other object.
