Summer 50, AV The Inner Warrens Fresh from the Tisuma Baths, Taln headed off to bring supplies to a storage room in the inner warrens. His long strides echoed from the walls and rebounded, warping the sound until it faded away. A large stack of clothing and blankets awaited organization. It was one of the jobs that put him on the spot, but he'd found a way to work it out. Although the boxes were clearly labelled, it left Taln with two problems: he couldn't read, and even if he could read, the script was too blurry and indistinguishable for him to see clearly. He opened each box, one at a time and felt the shape and quality of the material within. Taln might not be able to read the attached paper, but he marked it for his own ease of use that no one had ever bothered to notice. The dek notched the left top corner for male, right for female, left bottom for chiet, yasi and dek and right bottom corner for Avora and Endal. After five tedious bells of sorting, stacking and organizing, Taln raised both arms over his head and stretched until his back cracked. He rolled his neck and wiped his dusty hands on his ragged clothes. 'Now the rest of it is simple dek labor.' He thought, dragging a hand across his shaggy, copper hair to get it out of his eyes. The dek moved each box to the storage room and placed them accordingly. He walked into things several different times, stubbing his toes and mashing his fingers into a box beneath the one he was about to place. It was the only way. Taln had no depth perception and the light in the warrens was always poor at best. So his fingers and toes usually bore the brunt of feeling out the way before he could pick something up, walk, shift it, or set it down to stack it. Just as the man had set down the last of the blanket and clothing supplies, he heard several Inarta walking by and mentioning getting something to eat. He looked up and noticed the light rapidly leaving and waited for the group of defeated looking deks to pass on their way, before heading to the kitchen himself. He hated seeing his own caste walking together like beaten animals. It might be more dangerous, but Taln preferred his own company. Chow time and he'd managed to survive another day! |
