He hadn't wanted things to turn out like this, he felt stupid yet at the same time didn't see what he could or should have done. If she believed what they did was okay, how could he be her friend? Therefore, there was no consolation in what she said of his "honour". If she had simply proven to be a monster or cruel, then there would be a simplicity to it. He'd be right and she would be wrong. Her polite and artifical smile was like a taunt; there was nothing there and it might as well not belong to anyone. He managed a sad smile in return. What should he answer? Take on the face of the stranger and be politely agreeable, play the charade of people who meet in common settings, playing out their roles again and again in an eternal prepared performance of "life"? No, he didn't want to end up in that place, where nothing ever happened and there were no true emotions or interactions only repetition of lines... He realised he'd closed his eyes in thought for a moment, and opened them feeling abit more alive, looking at her with a curious, thoughtful smile. He wouldn't just let everything lie, and play the charades of everyday life like a puppet on strings. "No, I won't. But I refuse to accept... Not understanding you for what you are. I won't play games and pretend to be a normal neighbour if we're not. I want.. To know what a person such as you are, not what I might imagine you to be." He felt embarassed, speaking in small bursts and short phrases. Though unsure of what he intended, he wouldn't just let things slide into nothing and fade away. "If you cannot excuse their ways, then at least tell me of you, so that I might judge you for who you are rather than where you are from..." |
