When Sam stands up straight, he tops off at 6’2”, but he generally slouches. He’s all rangy limbs and whipcord muscle, with nary a trace of baby fat except a bit in the cheeks that privation and adolescence never quite managed to cannibalize. Though a Drykas by birth, few would realize it unless they saw him with a horse. His brown hair is cut short, his brown eyes are unremarkable, and the tribal tattoo on his left wrist is always covered by a leather cuff. Though fair of skin, he is managing to get some sun in his new adult life.
His clothes are mismatched bits of homespun and leather, giving the impression that he never managed to clothe himself properly since his last big growth spurt.
Sam’s guardedness is learned behavior at odds with his natural ebullience. He is not quick to trust, but has great potential for loyalty should anyone meet his unarticulated criteria. Ultimately survival is his talent and his goal. Few have looked out for him in life, and so he has taken it upon himself to go the job alone.
By no means evil, he has stolen to fill his belly and put distance between himself and those who might hurt him. Whether his petty crimes will make him a hardened criminal, only time and fate will tell. The idea doesn’t particularly bother him; he remains irreligious and happy-go-lucky when fortune affords him a little space to breathe without worrying after his next meal.
Sama'el was born to a horseclan of the Grass Sea, and for the first seven years of his life, all was well. His seventh summer marked both the zenith and the nadir of his short life. He earned his windmark by taming his first strider, but when his pavilion traveled beyond the Grass Sea to trade the culls of the herd to outsiders, they were destroyed to a man – with the obvious exception of Samael himself. With his strider and his family dead, he was injured, dazed and confused. The murderous band took him prisoner and sold him as a slave at the nearest market.
He passed hands a few times, eventually finding his natural place in the stables of a well-to-do merchant. Biding his time – at least he was accepted by the herd – he fooled the overseers into thinking the orphaned Drykas lad was broken for good. When his master and his guests were deep in their cups at a revel, Sama'el gentled the best horse and rode off to freedom. He was just fifteen.
For the next two years, he and the fine grey palfrey, named Horse, made their fortune together or lack thereof. Not above a bit of petty thieving or the odd bit of confidence art, they managed not to starve, though neither of them ever put on any extra weight. Sama'el never turned Horse toward the Grass Sea of his youth, feeling a strong aversion to returning to a world that he feels no longer holds a place for him. Some of his memories seem lost, or repressed. He considers himself no longer Drykas, but human. Nobody sees the windmark on the inside of his left wrist, and if he’s rather good with Horse, well, the Drykas aren’t the only people who can manage a fair bit of quality equitation.

Personality - Curious to a fault, Pip is one to poke his nose where it doesn’t often belong, just to ensure that his curiosity is sated. He’s never one to hold back what he is really thinking, even if such would be insulting. In all, however, he shows a fierce loyalty to his companions and will often help them out however he can, given his small stature.
