The Academy

Image

The Academy has sat adjacent to the Captain's Hall in Denval's town center for as long as memory serves. The bottom floor boasts of a wide veranda looking out over a yard dotted with maple and pecan trees complete with a handful of swings dangling from sturdy branches. The front room doubles as a coat closet and equipment storage while the back room is lined with windows and desks. In between the windows are shelves laden with the majority of Denval's precious small library. Modest housing for the present Lieutenant of the Academy is on the second floor along with a functional office.

All Denvali citizens between the ages of five and thirteen are required to attend to the Academy for basic education. Reading, writing and arithmetic are the standard fare, however there are a handful of learned individuals in the community who host specialized lectures, short class runs and tutorials in everything from history to battle tactics and all the way back around to vocational skills. It is not unusual for a visitor to Denval to be approached by the Academy lieutenant to request a few hours or days or their time to volunteer. Classes are held year round, running in six week spurts with a week break between.

At the age of thirteen, a student my opt to continue their education with petition to the Academy lieutenant for a more structured course fare in their chosen focus of study. Regardless, from thirteen to fifteen all Denvali citizens will continue their martial education on the Academy training grounds (located in the back). Martial training is included with the younger students, but the intensity is exponentially increased at this time.

Denval is a city of martial law where every citizens owns membership in the Denval militia. It is at the Academy that the children are given their earliest lessons in defense of themselves and their community so as to prepare them for the expected debt as adults.

Archery Master
Gnosis Eyris [2]

The Academy Lieutenant.
Member of the Dandy Guild.

Delano was born and raised in the heart of Denval, the product of a merry affair between a priest in the Order of Radiance and a huntress who owed first allegiance to the guard. His childhood was spent in dedicated vigil to his education, a hunger for history and the imagination to accompany it carrying him far. Though he has only ever departed Denval on the occasional fishing expedition, he has been known to ply outlanders with an endless assortment of questions. A young widower and father to a small son named Jonas, he is possessed of endless patience and surprising, if down played, talent. The beauty of his face is spoiled in the eyes of some by a curving scar slicing down his left cheek.

Long Sword Expert

Oliver is a born and bred Denvali citizen and the owner of three fishing vessels. He employs a small number of workers to assist him on the water and to run his market stall and is a husband and father of three. Salt of the earth, gruff and occasionally impatient, but he has a heart of gold. He devoted a large portion of his time to the Denval guard as a foot soldier when he was younger and when his father passed on went part time with that to take over the family business. An early and unusual hunger and talent with magic was fostered by his mother who served in the Chapterhouse of the Order of Radiance. Oliver is a man who views magic as a force of nature, approaching it as a dangerous but precious tool to be wielded with respect and care. He takes students one on one at the Academy by request.

Physical: A large and muscular man with a rugged expression with several scars down his cheeks and neck. Hairy arms, huge palms like dinner plates.

History: A true-born Denvali who grew up together with Oliver Camlach, the two of them had a strong friendship since childhood, with Arnold playing the role of the older brother. He always had dreams of pursuing his passion of music and writing, and so despite the objections of his parents left the city on a Zeltivan ship to follow his dream of being a bard. He performed while traveling, until one day his group was ambushed by a slave raid. His compulsory military training in Denval was what saved him, though quite narrowly, and he managed to escape. His beliefs were shaken from that traumatic incident, and the idealistic young musician soon began to change, realizing that he could not rely on others to keep him safe. He learned a hodgepodge of skills and discovered his affinity for Flux in the University of Zeltiva. Enrolling in the classes there, he found his true talent in being able to integrate martial arts and magic seamlessly without much thought. After graduating, he was offered a staff position to teach his unique thinking process that allowed him to so easily integrate the two together, but he turned it down, deciding that his isolated city needed him more. And so he returned, impressing Marx with his style of combat and now teaching a select group of students.

Role in the Academy: He only takes in the best few students in both combat and magical courses from the senior level, and even so the attrition rate is high in his introductory classes since only those who are talented enough with martial and magic will pass his tests. He rarely takes on single students, for if he does they usually are too skilled for his elite class of students. And such terms last for at most a month for then he will say, "I have no more to teach you, go out and experience the world!" He will sometimes substitute for Oliver Camlach and vice versa if one or the other happened to be busy, and is usually seen alone in his house plucking on his harp absentmindedly and singing softly while staring mournfully at the ocean. He has no family other than his relatives.

Teaching Abilities: besides the obvious as stated in his skillset, he also has Lore of all personal magics and is able to suggest methods to integrate the use of them with martial skills, though he is unable to actually teach them if its not in his skillset. In other words, he is able to teach the efficient integration of magic and martial, rather than the actual skills.

Arnold created by Eridanus. Self mod permission gained via Denval STs.
