Seaside Market

Image A bit of a marvel in Sunberth, the Seaside Market is an open collection of merchants of all sorts: wealthy arms dealers, poor peddlers, even peasantry with just a few items to sell, there is no required permit to set-up shop and if you leave your stall for even a moment you're bound to find it replaced. On any given day you can find just about anything for sale, granted it probably belonged to another merchant the day before. No item is guaranteed to work as described nor be in any usable condition; most of the jewels are fake and the weapons are in disrepair. Armor tends to fall apart a few days after purchase. On rare occasion one can find precious treasures of immense value for cheap, but it's more likely you'll just get ripped off and left with a useless hunk of nothing.

The market is set up outside, meaning it is left to suffer at the hand of the weather. Stalls and carts are all elevated as the market is placed just below the docks, when the tide comes in the pathways between the goods are flooded to the average man's knees. Several make-shift stair cases and ladders can be found about the narrow 'streets' for the occasion with small docks for those that shop by means of boats and canoes, those of which are left to lay in the dirt when the tide is out. Because of this daily event the market is fluid, shifting its form with new stalls and elevated platforms rising daily, some knocked over or their silts eaten through with the ware of rot. Some have wondered why the merchants don't just move shop, but the residents of Sunberth are stubborn and tenacious, keeping their defiance even against nature itself. It is not rare for some of the fish merchants to leave nets out, replenishing their stocks midday.

One can find visit the market at any time of the day. Most of the merchants keep their shops open and refuse to pack up for fear their spots will be taken. Tortures on long, sturdy posts are erected when the sun goes down and men are paid to lead consumers through the narrows with lanterns, sponsored by one of the wealthier purveyors of course - those whose business always seems to get just a little bit better as the sun falls.

Item Availability

The items available for purchase are too numerous to name individually and only a few stalls are permanent, meaning that most stock will never be found more than once. Generally, any common item under 5gm can be purchased without worry of falsities or wear, but anything over that has a high chance of either being forged or in a state of massive disrepair. Any discount requires storyteller interaction.

71st Day of Fall 510 AV

A Man dressed in a black jacket with a visible white undershirt tight brown pants and sandals stood at the front of a stall. The merchant was selling some diamonds which were most likely fake. The man named Grazydo held a diamond in his hand one made of Onyx(or so it appeared) "Oi you with the tattoo don't get any ideas!" spoke a man guarding the stall or maybe he was the merchant who ran it said with his medium length red hair bouncing and bobbing up and down like his adam's apple was while he spoke as he half ran half jogged over to the stall. This man didn't look like he fit in with the rest of the people in Sunberth he wore a purple cloak and heavy boots and didn't cuss when he spoke so he must be well educated. "You know where I can find a man named Tyserius do you? he sighed waiting for the short man's answer and wondering if this men was even 5 feet tall. "Oh 'im he's over there." "thanks" with the new information with him Grayzdo wandered over to Tyserius. "Ello your name Tyserius? he said in a odd low tone voice. "Why yeah who wants to kn-" he was cut off by the tall man clearing his throat. "You here for that Caravan guard job?" Grayzdo nodded.

Grayzdo

Tyserius was a stocky, slightly balding man with a big nose. Intelligence twinkled in his pale blue eyes as he flicked them up and down Grayzdo's figure. The merchant was clearly part warrior as well, the slightest hint of a mail shirt peeking up from under his jacket, and a well worn mace tucked into his wide leather belt. "You'll do, I guess. Job pays sixty miza of the gold variety. You get a bonus if no bandits make off with any of my goods. You gotta provide your own supplies, but I keep an empty cart for my guards that you can stash them on."

"The way's dangerous, so you'd best come heavily armed. Payment comes at the end of the trip. If you're interested, be back here in three days, ready to go. No get out of my face, I've got business to attend to." The grizzled man waved Grayzdo away and walked off, disappearing quickly into the thick crowd of the Seaside Market.

80 Fall 510

Essik walked with a quick pace through the market, his eyes scanning the tables for what he would need. It wouldn't be too hard to find clothes that fit the skinny form of Jokor. He was short and thin. Not too hard. He had a simple list of things in his head that would be needed so that the boy didn't perish durring the trip. The Circus had only just started and it wouldn't be good to start things off with a death.

Essik stopped at one of the clothing vendors, looking over the wares there. Thankfully, when it came to clothing, most of the items were in descent shape. Nothing fancy or anything like that. But he didn't need anything but basic clothes. He looked to the vendor, "I need to get a set of clothes for a short and skinny boy. Only comes up to about here on me." He indicated about chin height with his hand, "Need a full outfit, if you please. High Boots, Wool Pants, Leather Belt, Cotton Shirt, Leather Vest, Fur Cloak, and Leather Gloves." Essik pointed out each item on the tables as he mentioned them, taking a second to pull out his coin purse. As he waited for the vendor to get the things together and gather the total, he looked around for a weapons vendor. He placed 22GM onto the top of the table as the man passed him the items, "Keep the change."

He walked over to the weapons vendor with the clothes, looking over the wares and smiling as he saw what he needed. A small set of throwing knives. They'd probably need to be cleaned and sharpened, but that would be easy enough. He looked to the vendor, "Get me that set of 6 throwers, could you?" Once again, he pulled out some coins, placing 8GM on the table and nodding to the man to keep the change as he took the weapons and headed off back to where the group was waiting.

74th Day of Fall 510 AV
Gray Cloak wrapped tight around him. He wore a half a white mask and rode a frostmarch horse named Silver. His father's shortbow on a strap on his back with his quiver that contained 30 Arrows. A Buckler bulging from his backpack along with his saddlebags that contained one torch and a lantern. The horse slowly walked until he commanded it to stop once he found Tyserius."I'm ready to go" he said looking down to Tyserius.

Grayzdo

Tyserius was waiting at the market, an impatient look on his face. When he saw Grayzdo, he motioned for him from across several stalls. As the two grew close, the merchant growled, "What took you so petching long? We're going to be off to a late start!" Then he mumbled something under his breath, before saying, "Follow me, with a quickness." The merchant-warrior took off at a startling pace, pushing his way through the crowd with his bulk, twisting and turning through alleys and streets, ever aware of his follower. Finally they were free of the main city, having come out just south of the dirt road leading out of Sunberth. Just ahead was a large caravan. A dozen covered wagons, each pulled by four horses, and at least thirty horses. Some were mounted, others weren't. From the look of it, there was approximately forty people in all. One or two on the front of each wagon, and the rest on or near their mounts.

"We set a fairly decent pace, so be ready for a near season of hard travel. Remember, a bonus if nothings lost," said Tyserius as he mounted a fine looking horse. "Your job is to stay with the main body, and kill anyone that attacks, or tries to take my merchandise." Without another word Tyserius took off for the head of the column, and soon they were on their way.

A closer look at the caravan revealed just how well prepared the merchant was. There was two people on every wagon now, and a dozen riding on solo horses. From the looks of it, about twenty of the men were guards, wearing chain and leather, and armed to the teeth. Many were scarred, grizzled men, oft with mean looks on their faces. The rest seemed to be specialists, though hardly a one was what you would call dainty. These were hardened men, used to the rigors and dangers of the road. And they didn't like to talk.

It was going to be a long journey...

day 1 summer 511 av

The sun was barely rising and Corinth though she ought to start things off right by purchasing a dress. She new at some point she would need to gain the general "appoval'' of men and her farming outfit was not quite what would do the trick. She looked around the Market for at least a more pleasant looking character to do business with. She landed on an older woman with a cart filled with cloth and clothing alike.
"Excuse me maam, I was wondering if you had a simple cotton dress?"
The old woman looked Corinth up and down. please lady, please see that I'm poor...please don't try to swindle me
The old woman sighed and with a grunt handed her a plain cotton dress in a dark brown color with very simple embroidery across the neck.
"5 silver girl and be quick!" the lady barked. Corinth shuffled through her coin purse and handed the old hag 1gm. "well since you have a bit more what about a necklace? or perhaps a belt to go with your new dress?" Corinth looked at the belt the old woman was pointing at and lifted it. sturdy. simple. whats the harm?
"Deal. Thank you maam."

Day 30, Summer, AV 511

Essiks eyes narrowed slightly as he stood resolute at the boundary of the large market place. He knew what he was going to have to do. He had been gone for too long, taking too long to recover after his failed mission. He had let things fall apart in his absence. The circus was all but a memory in the minds of most of the people. That was going to have to change, and it was going to change now.

Essik nodded to himself as he strode forward into the marketplace, letting his eyes wander across the vendors’ wares. He was searching for something in particular. Something with which he could start lighting a fire under the city once again. Something with which he could let everyone know that the circus would be raising once more very, very soon.

A firm smile set across his features as he saw what he wanted. A vendor of dyes and paints was nestled back in one of the lesser traveled areas of the market. Essik walked up to the vendor, carefully taking in all the paints and dyes, working in his head to decide which hues he would want to get for his mission. Slowly, he made his decision, reaching forward and grabbing two different large bottles of paint, a bucket and a brush. He walked over to the merchant, waiting to see what the price rang up to. He smiled as he reached into his concealed coin purse and popped down 20GM for all of the items, telling the store keep to keep the change. He didn’t care right now. He knew what he needed to do. Picking up his belongings once more, Essik headed out into the city once more. He’d have to wait until night before he could enact his plans, but that wouldn’t be too long.

[Location] The Seaside Market

Postby Shai on October 10th, 2011, 8:05 pm

Timestamp: 8th of Fall, 511 AV
Time: Just before midnight

Shai dropped down from a wall deep in the shadow of an alley, her bare feet make a muffled clap as they hit the ground. Removing her boots which had hung tied together around her neck and she crouched to put them on. All the while watching her surroundings to see if she'd been noticed. Hoping that no one had seen her leap from the wall but having no evidence to proove it Shai moved out of the alley and into the cacophonous market. Sellers were attempting last minute sales while packing up their goods for the day.

Two blocks back Shai had purchased the knowledge of a dealer who could sell her thieves tools for the price of 3 silver mizas. She quickly but quietly walked down to the passage that lead to beneath the docks and eventually the market. She'd marked out of the path earlier that day while the sun was still up so she'd know the general lay out now all we needed to worry about was muggers. Her low light vision allowed her to see potential troubles long before the average thug could see her, since she carried no torch. Managing to sneak by one pair by waiting for a much more viisible target to prsent itself and take their attention while she slunk by.

Eventually, Shai came upon the dealer she'd been told about. He was a rat faced looking fellow who had a small variety of metal goods for sale; nails, small knives, some horse shoes. Nothing of any real value was on display but if Shai's information was correct he'd have the tools she needed.

"Evening Sir, I've been told you mind have tools for fixing stuck doors?" She thought the intent was obvious and was rewarded with a knowing nod from the merchant.

"Indeeed, I do. A deal for a customer so determined that she braved the dark. 40 gold mizas."

It took effort for Shai not to scoff, 40 was over priced especially for questionable wares. "25."

"35"

She smiled, the first prices are always just for show, neither party really expects to make a deal at such numbers. "30, but only if I can inspect them first." She wasn't willing to pay any more than 30 unless they were of great quality which she doubted. She also didnt want to stay out on the street so exposed by the merchant's torchs any longer than she needed.

The merchant eyed her over once trying to decide if that was the best he'd get from her, eventually he grunted his assent and pulled out the tools and placed them on the counter in front of him. Shai perused the tools, she could tell the lockpicks were of moderate quality. The hammer, handsaw and clamps all seemed in good order. It was the two small skeleton keys she was unsure about, she'd never used a skeleton and didnt know what the teeth should look like or what metal was appropriate. Having no real choice but to hope the keys were of the same quality as the rest of the goods. "Very well, this seems a fair deal." She counted out 30 gold mizas and placed them on the counter collecting the tools and storing them beneath her cloak.

"Good good, don't forget about me when you need replacements Lady."
She nodded and noted that the two thugs she had skirted earlier had taken interest in her transaction. As they began to move her way, Shai dashed off into the safety of the darkness with her new tools.
