33rd Fall A.V.

The scents were the first thing that came to mind when Jaiun thought of the Frost Falls Market. Scents of a million different things; scents of fish, meat, spices and many other things that made Jaiun's nose tingle. He preferred to obtain his food the old-fashioned way- i.e. kill it quite savagely- but sometimes Jaiun liked visiting the Frost Falls Market simply for the scents. As Jaiun became more familiar with his Icewatch duties, the marketplace gradually became a regular detour when he made his rounds. Many a time, Jaiun would find himself wander down the streets of Avanthal only to find himself amidst the chaos and excitment of the market. And this was such a time.

"Pardon me...", Jaiun muttered as he shoved past a couple of Vantha, trying to push his way though the mongering crowds. The Frost Falls Market was more crowded that usual today; Jaiun was forced to take his less-preferred human form to make up for the lack of space. Nevertheless, Jaiun was enjoying the scents as usual, as well as the many wares on sale; what with the whiteness of the city and the Northern Reaches in general, the wares and sales of the merchants, in their plentiful colors, always made an intriguing contrast.

A man, stout and surly, pushed past Jaiun, carelessly bumping into him and nearly sending him plowing into a merchant's stall. More out of surprise than anything else, Jaiun growled, a loud sound that pierced through the dull murmurs around him. It must have been an odd thing to see, a young man growling at another man; but, in his shock and the beginnings of anger, Jaiun had reverted to some of his more bestial qualities.

The man swiveled when he heard the noise, his eyes flashing a warning shade of orange. Then, perhaps noting Jaiun for what he was, his eyes turned a opaque shade of green suddenly, and he muttered, "Sorry about that, good sir."

Jaiun forced himself to swallow his rage. Perhaps his bearish nature was getting the best of his, but what he wanted to do was yell down the man for being so careless. That would be hardly proper for a Icewatch guard, to start raging at a helpless civilian! No, guards were supposed to be respectful, something, alas, Jaiun still had to learn.

He contorted his mouth into a unnatural smile and said, "Don't worry about it, just be more careful next time." And with that, he moved off, trying to regain the peace and solidarity that had been so abruptly ruined. He inhaled briefly and smiled. The scents. Yes, that could always calm him down.

Jaiun meandered down the market path, his eyes contentedly flickering from stall to stall, though always be sure to avoid the next incoming person.

[Frost Falls Market] Pardon Me... [Kaiielle]

Postby Kaiielle on October 1st, 2011, 7:27 am

Kaii bit into a bright red apple, a bit withered from it being so late for the fruit's season. Either way, she had a thing for the juicy, fresh thing. It was one of her favorite exotic foods, - or exotic to Avanthal anyway- and she could be caught going to the market more than one time to get her hands on one. In fact, that's were she was right now, heading back home to her hold. The apple was threatening to slip from her hands though as she weaved her way through the busy crowd. Many were carrying baskets of fish, while others just small loads of daily groceries. The only thing Kaii had with her was the red fruit in her hand and her Artic Fox, Ivanka, who was weaving through the crowds, yapping at people's feet.

Kaii had to stifle laughs as Ivanka startled the people above her, leaving men and women struggling to regain their balance. She was never one for other's grief, but it was just a little too funny to cease. She found another bite of her fruit as she walked along, enjoying the sights and smells that came with visiting the market.

Suddenly, Ivanka could be heard barking louder than usual at a tall man browsing the shops. It was a strange sight to see such a tall man amid all the smaller Vantha. But that thought was quickly ripped from her mind as the fox ran for the man, clawing and nipping at his feet. It was almost comical, the tiny creature picking a fight with a thing almost four times bigger than it.

Kaii ran towards the man, dropping her precious apple in the process. A look of horror could be found on her face as she snapped at Ivanka, but the fox would not stop attacking the man's feet. "Iva!" she said, literally snapping her fingers at the animal.

"I'm so sorry!" Kaii pleaded, finally looking at the man for a brief second before snatching up the fox. "I don't know what's gotten into her... she's never done this before." She brought Ivanka up to her chest, securing her in her arms. Her now light blue eyes looked up at the man once more in embarassment, her cheeks a light pink color.

Jaiun had just reached his happy place when the treacherous attack came.

The scents had finally lulled his turbulent mood back into serenity when it happened. As such, he had been walking down the marketplace in a relatively happy and carefree mood. Nonetheless, Jaiun's eyes had been searching the surroundings, anticipating and trying to avoid another, ahem, encounter. Why he didn't see the attack, he wasn't quite sure. The attack came from below his line of vision, and perhaps that was why he didn't anticipate it. In any case, before Jaiun realized it, a small white thing had suddenly attacked his legs.

"Gah-ah?" Jaiun's shout turned into a question at the end as he realized what it was that was attacking his leg- a fox.

It was basically a puffball of white fur, with little yellow eyes and a black muzzle. It gnawed at Jaiun's boot, it's teeth luckily not able to chew through it- Jaiun was glad he had actually worn clothing today. Several passing Vantha laughed or "aw"ed as they saw the little critter. Jaiun, on the other hand, grimaced; such an annoying little creature. Just like cats and dogs.

A Vantha woman quickly followed the fox, first trying to call the fox- calling it "Iva"- before literally ripping away the creature from Jaiun, who took a relieved step back.

"I'm so sorry! I don't know what's gotten into her...she's never done this before." The girl apologized profusely. In response, Jaiun finally forced himself to speak:

"Its...its fine." He forced out. "No...no harm done."

Jaiun eyed the fox with loathing, then turned back to her owner. He forced another smile to his face, as she was not to blame for the situation- well, she was, in part, for having acquired such a creature, but nonetheless...

"Really, it's no worry. I'm fine. I've faced more down than Iva here, though your...fox...did get the drop on me."

[Frost Falls Market] Pardon Me... [Kaiielle]

Postby Kaiielle on October 10th, 2011, 8:54 am

A light chuckle came from Kaii's lips as the man talked, exaggerating the attack of Iva. It almost made the embarrassment wash away, but as she looked at the fox it all came back to her again. She huffed her breath at Iva in anger that she would attack a man! Even though it was really nothing, it was so out of her character to do so. Of course she really didn't like men, but that didn't cause her to pick a random man to enforce her rage on. There must be something different about this man for something like this to happen. She was too flustered to figure out anything at this instant though. She sighed again as she thought what she could do make it up to the man.

"Umm, do you eat?" she asked, shifting the animal as it squirmed in her arms. Well of course he eats! she thought stupidly. "I mean, what do you like to eat? I'm really sorry about her," she said, nodding her head at the fox. He was probably admiring the market before he was uninterrupted. She noticed the grimace on his face as he was attacked. "I insist on buying you something for this. It's so out of her character." She looked to him again, smiling softly. Her eyes were still the icy blue color of embarrassment, but they were slowly fading back the content hue of purple.

The chuckle reassured him, and even made a small smile touch her lips. At least she had a sense of humor. Too many of these Vantha nowadays were so serious- couldn't take a joke, each and everyone of them. At least, not when it was about their singing.

The Vantha, after a moment sternly eying her fox, began to speak once more. Jaiun frowned when he heard this, and started to speak:

"Do I eat, you ask?" Jaiun repeated, not quite sure if he heard right. When she explained a bit further, he realized she meant to buy him something to eat to make up for the situation.

"Oh, well, yes, I do eat. But, er, it's not really anything you'd probably like, or enjoy seeing-" -Jaiun grinned, exposing one unnaturally long canine- "-and, in any case, what happened is not really your fault. I mean, Iva -or whatever her name is- should probably no better than to attack something at least twice her size." Jaiun laughed. "At least, not until some bigger teeth grow in."

"However, I would like the chance to talk to you more. I've been strapped for good company lately, and besides your choice of companionship, you seem like a very intelligent woman." Jaiun said, rather plainly. "Why don't we go get some food for that pet of yours so it's not so hungry it starts chewing on people, and talk a bit?" Jaiun asked.

"What's your name, by the way? I'm Jaiun. A pleasure to meet you."

[Frost Falls Market] Pardon Me... [Kaiielle]

Postby Kaiielle on October 13th, 2011, 7:38 am

Kaiielle had to grasp Iva tighter as she tried to squirm out of her arms, and it didn't help either when Jaiun flashed his long canines. Though, Kaii was more surprised than the fox could ever be when she realized he was a Kelvic, and listening to his answer just reassured her that it was true. A bright flame of curiosity ignited in herself, and she now found Jaiun about ten times more interesting. She had a million questions racking away in her head, just aching to get out. Another small laugh escaped her throat as he talked about Iva, and her cheeks flushed a pink color again as he complimented her.

"Why thank you... And I think that'd be nice." she replied shyly. "My name is Kaiielle, or just Kaii. It's nice to meet you also."

She would've shook Jaiun's hand, but if she let go her fox, it would surely start yapping again. She was so relieved he wasn't mad or too irritated, for she had so many questions to ask him. She had never had a one-on-one encounter with a Kelvic even though she's been living in Avanthal her entire life. She'd only seen them in their animal form patrolling the streets of her city. It has been one of her biggest dreams since she was a small girl to meet one, and if they were a part of the Icewatch that'd make it even better.

Kaii looked up at Jaiun and offered him a meek smile as she started walking again, hoping he would follow her. When he did, she glanced to her side at him to speak. "Well, I think Iva here attacked you because you're a... Kelvic. Right?" She almost felt embarrassed again for being so forward, but she was so curious and slightly excited. She had to snap her head back in front of her and concentrate on the frantic crowd when she caught herself staring at him. She was almost in awe, but tried to keep her excitedness to a minimum. Though being a Vantha, she knew her eyes were a bright color of yellow, telling of her emotions. Sometimes she hated being such an open book.

"Kaiielle..." Jaiun said, accentuating every syllable of the word. "Nice name. I like it."

Jaiun rocked back and forth on his heels as he waited for the girl to respond, a bit put off. She seemed to be taking quite a time in responding to him...vaguely, he wondered why.

A second later, it burst out of the girl, and a small smile appeared on Jaiun's face. Ah, yes. Now he knew. She was surprised- perhaps a bit excited- to be talking with a Kelvic. It had happened once, and Jaiun was sure it would happen again. Really, even though these Vantha knew about the Icewatch bears, they always seemed to be surprised to converse with one like another human.

It probably had something to do with the Kelvic's bestial nature, he suspected, but still, it was a bit amusing. Jaiun spent a moment looking between the fox and Kaiielle before he finally responded:

"Yes, I am indeed a Kelvic. That might be the reason, yes. Or she might just be hungry. I'd get her some fox treats -or whatever the hell you feed a fox- just to be sure." Mild dislike for the fox and humor alternated on Jaiun's expressive face.

Jaiun noted the expression on Kaii's face, as she was indeed an open book. "Have you never seen a Kelvic before, Kaii? You seem a bit flustered."

[Frost Falls Market] Pardon Me... [Kaiielle]

Postby Kaiielle on October 16th, 2011, 10:47 am

Kaiielle found herself laughing or blushing over Jaiun's every word, the embarrassment of being so giddy making her cheeks flush a deep red. She hoped he didn't find her annoying, but he must have encountered another person who was just as interested as her. Or at least she hoped he had.

"Yes, that'd probably be a good idea." she said, struggling to keep Iva contained as she snipped at Jaiun. She held her tight, but there was only so much a small body like Kaiielle's could accomplish with rather strong - or strong to her anyway - fox resisting her. She scanned ahead over the top of the Vantha's head, looking for a meat stand of some sorts. She heard Jaiun speak again. Oh, Morwen... am I really that obvious? "I've seen plenty of Kelvics before... I've just never met one. One of the Icewatch, rather. You are of the Icewatch, yes?" The last question just seemed to roll of her tongue, her not really stopping to think before she spoke. Straining her neck to see atop the buzzing crowd, she finally spotted a fish vendor only a couple paces away.

"Oh, here's something..." she idly announced as she headed the way towards the stand. She browsed all the different types of fish, but picked out one of the smallest, only a couple inches long, for Iva. She pointed out the fish she wanted so the vendor could wrap it for her. Very carefully, she pulled the right amount of Mizas required out of her pocket without letting the fox loose. "Are you sure you don't want anything?" she asked with a coy smile, almost as if she was teasing him. "These slaughtered fish look mighty appetizing..."

Jaiun smiled. This was better than he had hoped.

"I am indeed part of the Icewatch." Jaiun said expansively. "Not, ah, on duty at the moment, but...yeah." That was smooth, Jaiun thought. Ah, well. I don't think she'll care, enamored as she is.

Though his thought may have been a bit prideful, Jaiun couldn't say he wasn't enjoying the time spent with this Kaiielle. She was rather unlike anything he had ever met before, and that was saying something from one of the people who greeted people to the Everwinter City.

Jaiun followed the woman's gaze to the fish stand and followed her idly, a few steps behind her. And then she'd turned on him with a coy smile and a sentence to match; raising an eyebrow, Jaiun responded jocularly.

"Indeed, that does look like some mighty fine fish...but I really only like to eat fish I catch myself. The victory of actually accomplishing such a feat makes eating the fish all the more enjoyable." Of course, there was the frustrating thirty minutes spent beforehand just trying to catch the petching fish, but he didn't feel it would be prudent to mention that.

[Frost Falls Market] Pardon Me... [Kaiielle]

Postby Kaiielle on October 18th, 2011, 7:37 am

Kaiielle shook her head at at him as if she was disappointed and rolled her eyes. "Ah, whatever you say..." A slight smirk came upon her lips as she looked up at Jaiun. She could tell he was a man full of pride, but then again, what man wasn't? Even though she hadn't had many experiences, well, really no experience, she knew her fair share of what her father had told her. It was awfully awkward to have that kind of talk about men with her father, and her mother was painfully absent at times like those. Though, she really didn't have a say in it. Kaii swallowed the growing lump in her throat at the thought and quickly snapped out of her short trance with a small smile. Now was not the time to grieve.

"So, how long have you been serving with the Icewatch? It must be such an honor to be a part of something so important to Avanthal." she said, struggling with Iva again. The fox had her eyes locked on the little package since Kaii had gotten it in her hand, no longer paying attention to the Kelvic. "Can we sit?" she asked, nodding her head towards a wooden bench. She really didn't take no for an answer as she started making way to sit down. When seated, she let the fox out of her lap and unwrapped the fish, setting it down beside her on the ground. It was apparent that fish was one of Iva's favorite treats as she worked on it, tearing the scales and fins off. Kaii looked away from the fox and back up at Jaiun with a smile, folding her hands in her lap as she sat.
