Jameson coughed and crossed his arms across his chest. He gave the Valintar’s words thought before replying, ”Right, my name is Jameson Kindle. I have some experience with horses, and am proficient in surviving out in the wildlands. I also practice meditation daily, and have some blind fighting skill. I have a knack for learning new things as well, sir. I know what it is like to struggle with nutrition quantity. I farmed as a boy, alongside my father. I’m sure I could contribute to said system, in some manner. I’m willing to conform to the way the system operates.”

Jameson hadn’t the slightest idea of how the rank systems of Wind Reach worked, but the concept already fascinated him. When living in the small canvas tent with his mother and father, he knew that if he did nothing to help his father cultivate produce or hunt, he would miss his meals for the day. He would have to sit and watch his mother and father eat, but even then his mother would sneak him morsels of her own meal. It was something kept just between Jameson and his mother. This system offered a similar situation, except here in Wind Reach, he would clearly not be babied.

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

The Valintar nodded, rose, walked around his desk and shook Jameson's hands. "I'm Kaden. It's nice to meet you. We do not get many visitors here, but when we do its a real pleasure. Now, as for employment. I'm afraid I can only offer you a chiets position but at least you'll eat. Our stables, Skyhigh, is short two grooms. Toffin broke his leg in a fall and Avik just got bonded. It comes with a room in the warrens and all the work you can do with the horses. If it comes out that you can ride decently and are an asset to the stable you can move up in rank by beginning to train both horses and riders. This is a challenging job just coming into winter because soon we become snowbound and its hard, especially with new animals, keeping them in all winter. Eagles will fly in hay for them, but soon enough its a lot of shoveling snow just to keep the closest paddocks open so they can get a bit of exercise before the roads open. We're working on an underground arena within the stone, but its now on the priority list of our Earth Reimancers so it will come when it comes." Kaden said, smiling slightly.

"Will something like that suit?" He asked.

Jameson nodded his head thoughtfully, taking Kaden’s instructions and committing them to memory. Standing to shake Kaden’s hand again, he said, ”I’m not entirely sure how your system works, but I’m sure I’ll adjust just fine. I have a mare of my own; she’s checked into your stables here. I think this’ll be a perfect opportunity for me. And Aidara will surely show me around the city so that I’m better acquainted – she’s a nice girl. Thank you, Kaden. It’s been a pleasure so far.” Grateful for Kaden’s help, he smiled warmly.

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

Kaden nodded then rumaged around in his desk. He came up with a small parchment and scratched out a note on it with ink from a pot on his desk. The feathered quill he used danced as he wrote out the instructions. "Aidara can give you the tour. It seems shes already doing so. She can also see to you getting checked into a chamber of your own in the warrens. Meal times for your caste are at the 6th, 11th, and 16th bells. If you miss a meal time, you don't get another opportunity to eat until the next scheduled time or the next day.. whichever comes first. You can report to the stablemaster and he'll show you the ropes of the stable and get you situated there. Here's a little breakdown of pay and your costs for living here in Wind Reach. If you move up in rank, your profit goes up as do your opportunity for and qualities of meals." Kaden explained.

Chiet

Income: 300 pinions a season
Tax: 135 pinons a season
Profit Kept: 125 pinions a season
Expectations: Daily work at least eight hours a day and two days off in every ten.

The chiet are healthy males and females of the population that are skilled and smart enough to be left to their own devices. They are given a similar work schedule as the dek, though the labor is repetitive and often tough, the labor is not dangerous. Some of the common jobs of chiet are polishing mirrors that allow sunlight throughout Wind Reaches caverns. Some are farmers during the spring and summer, going down to bay to plant rice, or cleaning work areas, placing tools and supplies back where they belong. Chiet can be consider scholars and scribes, though the writing of knowledge and history is important, Wind Reach is much more concerned about where they will find their next meal. Cheit meals are hearty affairs that are considered plain but very filling meals. They eat stews, soups, roasts, and have a wide variety of vegetables fruits and nuts available as well.

"If you don't have any questions, we're done here and Aidara can finish taking you around." He added.

Jameson nodded attentively as Kaden explained the details of his newly appointed rank and the regulations that accompanied it. Pleased with the idea of starting off working in the stables, he smiled and thanked Kaden for his help once more. He folded the breakdown of his caste gently and placed it deep in the pocket of his trousers for easy access and referral. Offering one last firm handshake to Kaden, he turned and left to seek Aidara outside.

Sighing with relief after having felt slightly intimidated at the idea of being assigned a rank during his stay, he smiled and handed the parchment to Aidara to inspect. He chuckled, ”That wasn’t as bad as I had expected! Kaden was a pretty nice, hospitable fellow. I’ll be working in the stables, so I’m looking forward to my stay. If you’re not busy, uhm… I’d be grateful if you’d show me around. I’m rather enjoying your company. And the city, of course. But I’m really enjoying your company.” A little fleshy flush of peach rose into his cheeks, and he knew it, but he paid no mind. Absentmindedly, he rubbed the Lykata mark on the back of his hand, waiting to see if Aidara would consent to being his guide.

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

The meeting between the Valintar and Jameson took longer than Addy initially expected. It should have only taken a couple minutes, right? What could they possibly be talking about that would take this long? Moving from standing attentively by the door to lounging against the opposite wall, Addy looked around for anything that would hold her attention; it would not do for her to wander off in the middle of a tour. But the hallways were empty, leaving her immediate vicinity completely void of anything interesting at all.

At first, wandering a couple feet down the corridor towards where she could peer up at the open sky was enough; a few different riders were alight among the puffy, pale clouds of the early afternoon, circling lazily around the volcanic peak of their home or otherwise flying with purpose out over the forest that surrounded the mountain on all sides. Wishing for sharper eyes, Addy tried to pick out the identities of these riders and their birds for the lack of anything else to do, but failed miserably. They were just too high up; brown, black, or golden blotches in the sky to the little woman. All she did know about the fliers were that none of them were Sira. The couple could boast being able to pick each other out from great distances, though it sometimes proved inconvenient of one or the other was trying to surprise their mate.

All too quickly the riders seemed to vacate the skies above Addy and she was once more left glancing around for something to hold her always-fleeting attentions. There was an Avora halfway down the corridor who seemed to struggle with the huge bundle of whatever is was in her arms. A moment of indecisiveness showed as the woman gnawed on her bottom lip, recollecting the stern reminders Sira constantly gave her about acting her Caste. Running to help an Avora with her chores would surely fall under the category of things Addy wasn’t supposed to be doing. Then again, giving a tour to an outsider also seemed “against the rules” and she hadn’t given that a second thought.

Cursing Sira for trying to reinforce the unfairness of their social systems and then making her feel guilty when she couldn’t help but be ‘overly nice’, Addy trotted off down the hallway to help the woman.

“It looks like you’re having a bit of trouble” she called as she approached, already holding out her arms to take some of the burdon from the stranger. “Here, let me help you.”

“Endal Aidara, you shouldn’t have to… It’s dirty laundry, you can’t…” Trying to turn her body away to shield the massive bundle of clothes in her arms, the Dek Addy had assumed was an Avora shook her head vigorously. Her eyes stayed downcast after their initial shocked stare as Addy approached offering help, her voice quiet and meek. In her attempt to prevent the healer from helping, the Dek almost lost her burden on the stone floor, thrown off balance by the load and stumbling a bit as she twisted way.

“How do you all recognize me? I’ve never seen you in my life, girl. Is there a book everyone studies of ‘People to Avoid’?” Suddenly extremely annoyed, Addy ignored the protests and stepped closer, reaching for the clothes anyway. The submissive attitude instantly got under her skin, followed quickly by the refusal of her help. It was her help to give, no matter what Caste claimed her. These foolish Inartans, stuck in their discriminatory and masochistic ways. This tiny young woman would rather struggle with her job than take offered help, just because it was her place to refuse.

Growing up among the other Yasi and then Avora, Addy had learned that the discriminations among the Inarta were, for the most part, instinctual. It was impressed upon them since they were old enough to comprehend Nari, reinforced in everything they saw during their day-to-day. For a while, desperate to fit in and be someone, Addy had played along. She kicked her fair share of Dek, joined in the laughing as two of the lower castes fought over their meager meals.

Except, one day all those things lost their amusement. How she gained a conscience, Addy didn’t know, assuming it came with puberty, that as her breasts blossomed, so did her integrity. How it happened didn’t change the fact that it did, and that most of her peers seemed to lack that same sense of right and wrong; or else theirs were extremely warped. From that point forward, despite what was considered the ‘social norm’, Addy went out of her way to help and not discriminate. Yes, sometimes she fell back into the grips of thinking she deserved special treatment because of her Caste, but not everyone was perfect.

Instead, Addy always thought of herself as slightly different. Perhaps not in a bad way, but different none the less. Never did she actually consider that she had simply been bone differently from the rest of her race for a reason. The Mark from Rek’keli had been on the inside of her arm for so long, since her birth in fact, that she was no longer aware of it every waking moment. It was part of her and had been for the past twenty-four years. Never did she consider that the goddess must have seen something in her, even as a child, that was different as well as deserving. Being ‘different’ in a society where different was shunned and punished stunted outside-the-box thinking such as that.

Either way, Addy struggled with the Dek and her clothes until the Dek, being taller and slightly stronger, was able to wrench herself away and flee down the corridor with her burden.

“Arrrgh!” Stomping her food and growling in frustration, Addy turned in a small circle, actively seeking somewhere to vent her frustration. It built and built inside her, hands balled and shaking at her sides until she couln’t contain it any longer. The toes of her left foot smashed against the stone of the corridor wall; Addy bit down on her tongue to contain the yelp of pain, determined to look tough for anyone who might have been watching. She thought her anger legitimate, for Dek’s might be the lowest of the low, but they of anyone should understand discrimination. Had Addy just not been discriminated against because of her higher caste? The thought rankled, even the throbbing pain in her abused foot unable to dull the insult.

When Jameson finally immerged from his meeting, he found Addy sitting against the wall across from the Valintar’s door where he left her. She was throwing stones against the opposite wall, testing her aim to see if she could consistently hit a divot in the wall just above the doorframe.

“What’s the damage?” Rising slowly because of her now favoring left foot, Addy tried to keep the growl from her voice. There was no reason to be unkind to her new friend, as he had done nothing wrong at all. Forcing a smile she hobbled to his side and took the paper he presented her.

Chiet. Heaving a sigh, Addy saw the friendship of this new, attractive specimen of a man slipping away from her. Would he soon be averting his gaze when the passed in the halls, bowing and tacking on “Endal” in front of her name like everyone was likely to forget their place. She stared at the words written in Kaden’s neat hand, taking note of the hours required and the meager pay stamped on at the end; it was much less than her own income. Even the description of what he could eat stuck in at the bottom twisted her stomach.

“The stables? That is probably one place I haven’t frequented often. The horses scare the living shyke out of me.” She refolded and handed his working slip back, her green eyes meeting his own for a moment before flitting away again. Apparently he was hard of sight, so perhaps he would miss the strained friendliness of her face. Letting the silence stretch between them, Addy tried to get her mind back on track, away from her miseries so that she could figure the best plan of action and where to show Jameson next.

“I’m really enjoying your company.” Having opened her mouth to speak at the same time as he, Addy quickly snapped it shut. The admission caught her off guard, and normally would have elicted a bright smile, had she been in anything other than a cynical mood. Instead her mouth twisted in a wry smile as she glanced away down the hallway.

“And I enjoy yours. Make sure your fellow workers don’t convince you that I’m too good for you, eh? Technically, we met before you were any caste at all.” Knowing that the man would know little and understand less of the complicated Inartan Caste, Jameson wouldn’t really understand what her statement meant, also unaware of the little battle that had waged in the hallway while he was inside with the Valintar. Addy had tried to keep the bitterness from her voice and thought she rather succeeded, hoping that Jameson wouldn’t pick up on such subtle changes in her voice. However, the little woman failed to realize that she had lost the infectious energy Jameson had seen prior to leaving. In contrast, Addy seemed moody indeed.

“Lets go show you the stables, then, since you’ll be spending most of your time there.”

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

Postby Jameson Kindle on November 17th, 2011, 11:24 pm

Jameson squinted slightly to try and make out the expression on Aidara’s face as she read the working slip. She seemed edgy, but why? Something about going blind had caused his other senses to take up for the loss. The air would often grow thick with the emotions of those nearby, seeping into his pores for further analytical investigation. He stood and waited patiently, watching her all the while, as she finished reading his slip and presented it back to him. When at last she spoke again, he chuckled and shook his head. ”I’m sure I’m not understanding something about the system here, but I think I will catch on pretty fast. We’ll see. But you’re right. We did meet before my caste was established, so don’t worry, Addy. It won’t affect our newfound friendship, as long as I can help it.” For a moment, he considered her reply and then added, ”Well wait. Convince me that you’re too good for me? You must have a higher, uh, ranking than I. Would you explain them all to me? Just so that I’m aware, you know. I don’t know what exactly well be expected of me when addressing other members of my own caste, or of other castes. Am I saying that right? Caste?”

Jameson realized how desperately nervous he must have sounded, and laughed. ”I guess I’m rattled, Addy. This is very different than anything I have been involved with before.”

As she agreed to show him the stables, he smiled. She brought a warm curtain of calm over his soul, settling him. He felt fortunate. Had Aidara not approached him in the courtyard, he probably would not have been able to find the Valintar’s office. He wouldn’t understand the castes. He would have no idea how to get to the stables. Out of everyone he could have been approached by, it was this compassionate soul. He thanked the Gods above.

“Yeah, you’re saying it right.” The squint was quite endearing, though it did make him look perpetually confused. With her emotions swooping from one extreme to the other, Addy had to bite down on her lip to hide a smile.

“I would rather not explain. Putting it to words just…” Shrugging, the healer was about to turn away until she heard the unsteady waver in his voice. Fighting the urge to roll her eyes, the quick flash of amusement was smothered beneath renewed annoyance.

“Alright. The children are Yasi until they mature. From there, they either become a Chiet or Avora depending on what their trade skill is or who they apprentice too. Endal are the protectors and providers, the elite, while the Dek are the complete opposite. They are the broken and the shunned.” Crossing her arms back over her chest, Addy turned to look directly at Jameson. “I am Endal, yes, but I was risen from Avora. I was Avora all my life and I have found it troubling how people treat me differently just because I found the love of my life.” Her voice was hard and clipped, leaving out a lot of the necessary detail. “Now I have my Sira and I am happy, and yet they expect me to… to… be different.” No longer was she explaining to the newcomer, lost again in her irritation.

“You are Chiet, though with that squint I am surprised they didn’t slap a Drudge label on you.” Green eyes moved quickly over the man before her, listening so intently to her, just trying to understand. For some reason, this only irritated her further. “They won’t let you be friends with me because of the caste gap between us.” Of course, Addy was blowing this all our of proportion. On top of him being completely new and confused, she wasn’t making a very good first impression.

About to turn away again and end the discussion, Jameson cleared his throat and bared his concerns yet again. Except this time, Addy took pity on him, forgetting the Dek that insulted her and turning back, for the third time, to the newcomer.

“Listen. It’s okay. Today hasn’t been the best of days and I am not making this easy on you because of it. Just…. Just stick by me, and you’ll be okay. I’ll show you what to do.”

OOC :
Okay so this was a little awkward to write just because Addy reacted in a way that I wasn’t expecting, also I’m so distracted and behind on my posts. So we’ll work past this and pretend that it’s not horrible :D

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

Postby Jameson Kindle on November 25th, 2011, 4:06 am

Jameson’s jaw set and his brow furrowed. What had happened to upset Aidara so? She was flittering from thought to thought, and she nearly lost him. As she recited the castes, he paid close attention. There was so much to memorize, so much information, and seemingly so little time to do it. He listened patiently as she rambled through her thoughts with an irritated tone. The freckle-smattered young woman with the red hair seemed frustrated. Nevertheless, he absorbed her every word. And then, wait, what? Who or what was Sira?

”Wait, who’s this Sira?” He hadn’t heard her mention that name before, and now he was curious. ”Sorry, I’m just nosey. And as for others not letting me be friends with you, I guess I’ll just have to work really hard and move up in caste so I can be accepted socially as your friend.” He offered her a smile and said, ”I’m sorry you’ve had a bad day. I understand though, Aidara. We all have them.”

There was a prickly feeling in the back of his mind. Something she had said had stuck out to him. You are Chiet, though with that squint I am surprised they didn’t slap a Drudge label on you.

She had seen the pained expression that signaled his distress when trying to visually focus on something. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, and then back again as he attempted to relax his brow and the thin slit through which he was trying to see. She had been too kind to him. He couldn’t lie to her, or omit the truth anymore. He looked down at the ground before searching for the dark circles tinted with green that were her eyes.

”Okay, Addy, you’ve been extremely kind to me today. And I want to be your friend. I cannot think of how to express my gratitude to you at this moment, but I know that there’s something I should share with you. It’s bound to come up some point or other, but…” He anxiously rubbed at the Lykata mark on his hand, it’s silvery hue unhidden from view. With a hushed voice, he continued, ”Aidara, I’m almost completely blind. It’s why I squint. It’s why I got lost, and why I couldn’t make it to the Valintar’s office. Because I couldn’t… Because I couldn’t petching see it. I-It’s a long story, but I suffered f-from, well, an injury. It’s a long story but… One day I’ll share it with you.”

Show Me the Way [Aidara]

"Oh..."

The single syllable was soft and breathy, as if it had escaped from Addy's lips before she could stop it. She had hurt him. She could see that now. Silently cursing her ever present dramatics, Addy attempted to stifle the overbearing irritation that currently controlled her personality. It was a difficult beast to tame, and it fought her the entire time. But subdue it she did, locking the part of her that wanted to snap and snark in a dark corner of her mind; it was trick that her healing had taught her, how to partition her mind so that she could think more freely.

Having turned away from Jameson, Addy was able to close her eyes and take a deep and hopefully calming breath without him seeing. When she finally did turn back, her face was softer and a bit more open, similar to when they had first met only hows ago.

"No, don't be sorry. It's my fault. As a guide, a protector, and a provider for this city it is my duty to be as hospitable to as possible." While this wasn't exactly true, Addy didn't see the harm in a white lie. Addys own code of ethics told her such things, as other Endal would have passed Jameson by, leaving him to find it own way. That, and the confusion drawn all over his face, the slight hitch in his voice led Addy to believe she had hurt him, made the healer feel as if she needed to fix what wrong she had already done to this man.

"From this point forward, we are friends. New ones, but friends none the less. Friends help friends, right? So, as a friend, I will continue the tour." Putting a slight emphasis on each application of the word 'friend', there was only a hint of the former irritation in her voice, her smile no longer as forced as she turned it up at him, motioning for him to follow her.

But he didn't. Instead, Jameson stood and chewed his words for a few minutes before finally spitting them out. He was blind, or near enough. This knowledge immediately put a sour pit in the middle of Addy's stomach. How could she be so tactless. Her gaze started to lower in shame, a blush creeping up her neck to blossom in her cheeks as she lifted a hand to rub at her forehead. The awkward guilt that rose into her chest kept her from responding for a few minutes. Addy was completely off her game; normally she'd be able to gently console or reassure Jameson, perhaps suggest a treatment or two that might help. But no. Instead she found no words of comfort, a silence stretching between them until she realized she had to be he one to break it.

"I'm sorry." Addy almost blurted this, flickering her gaze upwards until her green eyes met his squint. "That was... rude of me. You don't need to offer any explanation." If Jameson tried to insist that he did, Addy would hold up her hand to stop him.

"This is all a big mess. Lets start over and forget that most of this happened, alright?" And that winsome little smile came back, dimples shyly creeping back into her cheeks as she held out a small hand too him.

"Hi, I'm Aidara. Would you like me to show you around?"
