While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

60th Day of Summer 511 AV

Bob is going to take a break from Sunberth for a a day or so. Too much cutthroats, thieves and scum around that he''d rather take his chances with wildmen, bandits and monsters. At least with the latter, he knows where he stands and who to stab if he cannot run. And so, Bob was walking down a random path in the Wildlands enjoying the nature and scenery as well as the fact that he did not need to watch his back and pockets every few seconds. But still, he kept watching the position of the sun. As soon as it would pass its peak, Bob would head back since he wouldn't want to be caught out in the wilderness alone and unprepared.

Life in the forest was much like life in the mountains, save with a more ready abundance of materials. Wrenmae had been hiking in the wildlands for days now...since the small house, he had found ample reason to survive off the land...of course necessity called him to hunt, to lay the traps he still had with him and struggle with the immense amount of gear he still carried.

The horse would have been helpful, but Weaver was long gone...back in Alvadas with Seidaku. Even the welcome company of the kitten would have helped. As it stood, the hypnotist walked alone. The forest pushed around him, rough branches catching at the sides of his pack and clothes, birds winging over with cries of chortling nonsense.

Pausing beneath an oak, Wrenmae slid to the ground. In order to continue he must purge his thoughts of such unnecessary distractions. Sighing, he pulled up that image of nothing Seidaku had taught him so long ago. Pulling the portal of Void into Mizahar was difficult work. To a tired magicer, the process was compounded by the life around him. Every noise dug into his consciousness and tried to disrupt or otherwise pervert his thought. Wrenmae concentrated, pulling a tiny point of nothing into Mizahar. I calmed him, at least he could still manipulate to his full extent. A man was helpless in such an hostile place, but if he still had heart he might persevere. Admittedly Wrenmae had no idea where he was. He might be walking in circles, round and round a forest on some forsaken island.

Holding the portal for a moment, picturing the nothingness, holding the nothingness, peering into that infinite blackness, he let it drop and swirl away to nothing.

He shook his head, groaning to his feet. Forcing Djed into his legs, he concentrated on the musculature of his horse, Weaver, on the way his flank had felt, the corded way horse muscles moved in motion. All he wanted was to boost his step a bit. His muscles tightened, shifted, warping with the same slow feeling he had grown used to. Although he now walked a bit lopsided, his legs easily a bit larger than they should be, he felt a little less tired.

He maintained it till his bones were weary, tired of supporting an incomplete morph.

Dismissing the change with slow, careful care, Wrenmae muttered curses and stepped up an incline, still ringed by trees staring down at him.

It wasn't until after the peak of the suns passage that he heard something, a rustle and deliberate step. Forgoing danger entirely, the Hypnotist pushed through the undergrowth like a crashing bear. The idea that someone was here, that there were people, it completely erased the exhaustion growing at the edges of his vision.

"Oy! Oy!" He called out, breaking the treeline and descending on Bob with a frenzied wave. The man was alone, but it meant nothing to the socially deprived storyteller. Laughing, almost giddily, he allowed exhaustion to catch his legs and send him tumbling to the path in front of the gambler, still laughing amidst the pain.

"Oh gods," he said between chuckles, "You don't know how glad I am to see you, someone, anyone out here!"

The nice quiet and tranquil of the forest was disturbed when Bob heard an "Oy! Oy!" accompanied by the sound of rustling leaves. Bob's only other companions the whole time, some other birds even stopped their little calls and songs and flew away from the disturbance to signal that there really is another presence nearby.

Bob was going to turn to the sound of the voice but just as he was something crashed right in front of him spreading out a little cloud of dust. On close inspection, it was a man who despite his little trip falling down was laughing happily without a care in the world. "That just had to be painful...the fall must have knocked his brain loose" Bob thought to himself.

Turning his head to look left, right and behind Bob looked to see if there was any other people around or any suspicious activity for a forest. He was still near Sunberth. This strange crazy person could the distraction for any thieves or bandits who want nothing more than to hurt or kill him and leave him out in the forest to die. Satisfied to see no other new tracks on the path as far as he could tell except some lines and "U" marks for a cart and with no other noise or birds flying off, Bob extended his hand out to the strange person as he gripped the other on his cane tighter which he was already using "Are you alright? Or are you mental already or was that even before the fall?" Bob chuckled, can a person who fall and tumble like that so near the path be anything else?

Gasping for breath, beside himself for a moment with sheer laughter, Wrenmae held up a hand before standing. It was impossible, and he fell again, his limbs jelly with exhaustion.

"No, no, I've been..." he took a deep breath, gasping for the words, "I, I, forgive me just...give me a second."

Laying there, dappled by the afternoon light, Wrenmae relished the feeling of another so close by. Sweat beaded his forehead, soaking his clothes, and he realized then how very dry his mouth was. Taking a swig from his water canteen, one of the last gulps he had, the mage finally sat up and sighed.

"I'm...sorry, just, just so glad to see another person." He struggled to his feet, picking up the loose pieces of gear knocked askew with his fall. "I was wrecked, my ship went down in the Suvan...I don't know how long I've been out of things, just glad to be alive...had no idea if I had found a wild island or washed up on some unknown shore. Tell me, please, where are we?"

He laughed again, the question too ridiculous to consider. Of course this fellow knew where they were, but to be alive, to speak...unknowing of the afterlife Wrenmae had assumed maybe he'd fallen into one before...an infinite forest for a journey with no end.

Leaning against a tree, Wrenmae took a few deep breaths and smiled. "And who are you? My name is Wrenmae, Wrenmae Sek."

Maybe this one isn't as mad as Bob thought. Maybe he was running or being chased by someone as far as Bob could tell with all the hard breathing, gasping and drinking. Bewildered too, a wild island or unknown shore from the Suvan. Bob grinned as he was thinking this. Maybe he can have a little fun with this pitiful fellow before deciding to help him.

Bob acted a little bit excited to make his prank convincing. "You mean you washed up from the Suvan too?!? Was it the same sea monster which attacked you? That thing was huge, it should have..." Bob paused for a while to think up what he was going to say before continuing "...two heads, with fangs as large as the biggest swords I have ever seen...and...giant clawed fins on its shiplike body!" and Bob spread his hands outwards trying to express how big the monster was. Bob was going too far now, the lie in his story was a little bit too big but the man shouldn't know right?

When Bob was done, he got some res out into the skin of his fingers and hurriedly transmuted it into water. Putting the hand to his forehead and brushing it off like any to put in the finishing touches to his act as though brushing off beads of sweat. After his little outburst on the imaginary monster, Bob made himself breath hard for a while as though out of breath before continuing. "Well Wrenmae, I am Bob. So where have you been living out here?" Bob asked the man who was now sitting on the tree.

At first, the mage was shocked. The sea monsters that had destroyed the Wretched Sprite were nothing like Bob had suggested, but certainly it was probable right? Two ships, both thrashed along the shore...it was possible. But it wasn't the lie he told that undid his act, it was in the acting afterward. Bob, a man who had before been walking rather leisurely, only somewhat winded by the twists and turns of forest dales, gave a sudden in and out of breath, his face suddenly wet with liquid.

Trickery and illusion, a habit that Alvadas people used well.

But to what aim? Wrenmae had been living off the barest essentials, gone from society, cast aside from understanding for days and this fellow had the audacity to simply try to fool him by virtue of his situation? What kind of a man was he?

A sword was sheathed at his waist, a quiet assurance that simply accosting the fellow for his rather cruel trick wasn't the best option.

His expression fell, excitement shifting to disappointment, even the edge of anger. Breath still came to him shortly, still winded from his journey and his sudden sprint. What was demanded of him in this situation? What sort of action should he take? He might have been this mischievous before, but that was long ago...when he was a child.

Glaring at Barton, he closed his eyes for a moment and finally sighed, breathing through a smile spreading across his face.

"Place to place really, there isn't any home or built shelter out here...none that I've found. You look great for our situation though, you must be faring better than me. But...if I can ask, where were you bound to?"

He extended his will, piercing Bob's aura with his will and piercing his mind. eye to eye contact, channeling Djed through a conduit. Soothingly, the Hypnotist suggested that Bob should take advantage of Wrenmae, obviously bewildered and starving for attention...his apparent willingness to believe. Perhaps he could earn some coin off it, certainly Wrenmae's pack seemed overburdened with supplies. In short, he whispered ease and confidence into the gambler, better that he believed Wrenmae believed rather than be revealed for a brigand or mercenary. The storyteller would have his chance to retaliate, eventually, but first he would spin a little story of his own for the man.

One trick for another, even trade.

With Wrenmae glaring at him like that, Bob thought that the jig is up. His lie has went too far and now the man is pissed. Then when he smiled and answered the question, the calmness came over Bob. Bob didn't think it was strange because for him, being calm is always a good thing. Oh well since the joke is still on, why not continue to poke a little more fun with the situation Bob had put them both right now? And Wrenmae did have a pretty big pack of supplies...why did Bob suddenly think about it and coin amidst all this fun? Thats not like him at all. But thats true, he better get Wrenmae to conceal it or something before they head to Sunberth later.

"Yea I know what you mean living out here in the wild. Hopeless, lost and...stranded. Lucky for me most of the crew had survived so we are just trying to survive in the shipwreck until some form of rescue comes for us." Bob punched his fist into his palm to try and get Wrenmae's attention "Damn that sea monster!" Eventhough Bob was saying this angrily, there were little curves upwards forming on his lips with him laughing silently with his prank.

The second part of the question put Bob in a little spot. Where was he bound to while they were stranded in a strange place as the story is a real good question. Right now all he wanted to do is have a little break from Sunberth...but... Bob started to think a little again. Cursing himself for enjoying it too much and hinting that there was more people with him, Bob slowly made a scene of finding a nice spot and slowly taking a seat at the tree opposite of Wrenmae.

Looking at Wrenmae, Bob started thinking a little bit of what to say. Then it just came out suddenly since he had nothing else to lose except probably this man's respect and the subsequent laughs at his expense. "I...am...bound...I am looking for the crew!" Bob smiled as he tried to build on the confidence "Yes, I am looking for the crew! Bob said again to reaffirm himself. "They went out hunting a...a few days ago. Since most of us back at camp are the useless ones, we...we drew straws to see who has to look for them before we run out of food."

Then Bob stood up again quickly compared to the time he took to get seated. "In fact, why don't you help me look for them? Its safer for both of us instead of being separated right?" Bob asked Wrenmae as he extended his arm towards him.

Hefting the heavy pack, Wrenmae's legs begged for more rest. The small man was up and about however, scarcely winded at all. Wrenmae shot Bob a murderous look before arduously climbing to his feet, ignoring the hand altogether. By now the lie had approached something akin to a forest fire. Blazing branches of illogical procedure set the entire story in a cataclysmic pyre. Barton couldn't possibly believe he was being successfully deceitful, even with hypnotic suggestion.

And Wrenmae was just tired.

"Your crew," he repeated quietly, shaking his head, "How long are you going to be an ass?" He closed his eyes, sinking back to his knees and then to the forest ground. "It doesn't matter how I got here, alright? I'm exhausted and you're the first person I've seen. If it makes any difference, I'm Wrenmae of Alvadas...let's just start over from scratch." He extended his hand up to Bob, the thin arm shaking with tremors of quiet exhaustion.

He could have made it, crossed the Suvan sea by chance and chance alone. Vayt might have spared him, or the work of some power beyond his. If so, a shame he did not know them.

Anyone was a better God than Vayt.

The storyteller was spent. The bulging fabric on his back could barely contain the gear he carried. Most of it was inedible, the carried afterthought of a survivalist...a survivalist without food.

He wished he had Weaver here, any creature without the capacity for deception. Maybe Ket, the innocent ball of fur. She was miles away in Alvadas now, and for that he was thankful. Anything was better than an unmarked grave in the Suvan.

Anything.

And in that fact, Wrenmae had found the reason to push on...even with the Blight.

Anything was better than death...even life as a plague.

Maybe Bob should have gotten up a little bit slower so that he can keep up the ruse he was a tired and weakened survivor just as Wrenmae but things were just getting to become too good without having to matter with the tiresome details like that. At least in having his fun he was trying to help this poor sod so all that anger could have been directed towards better things like trying to forget about his own tiredness instead of how much of an ass Bob was being. Bob might be an ass but he was a helpful ass. It was normally overlooked that the stubborn animals are actually very useful in doing labor but stubbornness was the only similarities that Bob had with the animal. Even the laugh that he would be doing now is different. It had its own brand of...humor in it.

The stubbornness showed after he had a good laugh when he told Wrenmae "yes, my crew. You know? People you have to work together with to survive in the ocean?" Letting out another chuckle he would admit that "even if I am being an ass, I don't think its pretty nice to call anyone who just met names especially when I can still remember my name as Bob. If I wanted to I could call you a little lost puppy now and let you be on your way" but he would not because its dangerous in the wildlands and equally dangerous at the nearest populated area. Both had their own animals only in different skins and if Wrenmae does not know what he was in for he would fall prey to them much more easily.

Waving Wrenmae away for the way he ignored his own hand earlier, Bob would start walking to the path telling him that it was "alright, alright. So Wrenmae, lets head back to somewhere which is not Alvadas then..." which Bob knew was the nicest place in the world. "Sunberth!" Bob grinned telling Wrenmae where is it they are going. A little bit down the path from where they met Bob stopped to look at Wrenmae to see the exhausted person and his heavy bag. "Do you need help with that?" he asked out of appearances than concern. Normal people especially in Sunberth would know better than to trust other people or expect a dwarf to carry a heavy load and Bob was hoping that Wrenmae was not too exhausted to allow that fact to pass him.

Would he feel the same about that anything is better than death? He will just have to wait and see Sunberth for himself if only Bob could remember how to get there. Looking around at the fork Bob looked around wondering "uhhhh...we are going...this way!" pointing at the one of the paths he had chosen. Bob remembered following some cart tracks earlier but he could not recall from which direction. Well knowing a path was better than getting lost. At least it was a definite that they will either be moving towards or away from Sunberth and after a while Bob will realize which.
