“I promise you this...” The fire reflected in his eyes, but he held her in a warm embrace as the whole world seemed cold, awash in chaos.
“Rather I live, rather I die...” his quiet words ran through her pulse. She lifted a hand to his cheek, tracing his features one last time. When dawn rose, he would be gone, and she would return to the tents. There once was a brief illusion of peace, of final peace amongst the two nations.
“...I will find a way to return to you.” He held her hand against his cheek, their eyes only for each other. Then dipped his head, a kiss spoke of all she could not find the words to say. At the crisp call of the horn resonating in the clearing, they broke apart.
Her hand lingered in his until he turned to follow the others, coming out of the series of tents, clothed for battle. Light was barely dawning on the horizon, casting the world in gold and the clouds as lavender puffs, with deep purple-reds hidden on the edges.
“I will wait for you.” Her words were barely a whisper, as she watched him walk farther away. “Forever, if I must.”
He did not returned that night, nor had the fighting ceased. Instead the world was alight in flames, and every step shook. She would not let that stop her.
“I promise.” Her voice was a rasp as she spoke amongst the smoke. Then she took another step.
“I will find you—” And she followed the horizon. Her throat was ablaze, and her lungs were burning, breathes came short, but she barely faltered.
“Even if I die.” And she remembered his face, and her love for him. “I will always...” She swayed for one moment, then she toppled over some upturned rock as the earth trembled once more. Pain flared through her leg, numbed and useless as it now was. Raising an arm, she dragged herself across the ground. Only one image compelled her forward. Even the air around her was poisoned by the fumes. Each breath was some great effort, but still she felt no reprieve. And yet she continued to speak, as if her words could reach him. “...wait.”
He would find her, and she would find him. No matter if the world shattered, and all existence was engulfed by darkness. Even if her body failed her, she would remain.
Her existence was tied to that one promise. She would remain.
