Day 19, Fall of 511 AV
Before Evening
The Gankplank Pier, Baroque Bay

It was fortunate that Eri managed to complete his quota for the day, and so the bonus he deserved from the task he did earlier in the day was not forfeited. Leaving the establishment with his job done, he immediately headed towards the Gankplank Pier. To be honest, he was pretty intrigued by Captain Dewarky’s offer, and there was nothing like a mystery and promise of a reward to attract him. He reached the busy area, though there were less people already for most of the privateers were done with whatever they docked for, and were either resting in their ships or enjoying the comforts of comely wenches in various taverns. It was still day though it would be night soon, and Eri made sure to at least appear in his vantha form if he wanted the captain to recognize him.

He strode to where the confrontation earlier that day had taken place and after dithering there for a while a sailor wearing colours that signified him belonging to the crew of The Floating Peace approached him. “Tua’s word-runner?” The sailor queried, though it was probably a rhetorical question. After the fiasco with the lion kelvic in the afternoon he was sure that all the pirates who had been watching the scene would recognize him. His vantha heritage did not help, either, and it made him stick out uncomfortably in the group of pirates who dressed similarly, walk similarly, talk similarly, and sometimes even look similar.

“Lead the way,” Eri acknowledged, and the sailor brought him to one of the ships docked at the side. It was a magnificent ship, beautifully built but it was obvious that it had been through several rough patches, evidence of it showing in the shoddy repairs that were hastily made no doubt in urgent response to foul weather or ship battles. The cannons that were on board made it pretty clear that this was no merchant ship, and the proud flag hanging above the mast that had two fingers crossed together in an emblem distinguished it from any other navies or mercantile associations. This was clearly a pirate ship, one carrying people whose job was to plunder and kill for profit.

The ship was connected to the docks with a wide wooden plank, and the sailor lead the vantha into the ship, ushering him into the main cabin. The room was small, as space was still an issue in such ships, but it was quite lavishly furnished in comparison to the normal sparsely decorated rooms. It was nowhere near the kind of luxury found in rich merchant ships, but it had several shelves that held various books on circumnavigation and information of cities, a huge map of Mizahar hung on the wall furthest away from the door, and a large table that served as the captain’s desk along with several chairs with soft cushions placed on them for comfort. There were personal effects scattered and hung throughout the room, and a snug-looking bed at the far end of the room. This was undoubtedly the captain’s office, planning room, bedroom and meeting place for higher ranking staff of the ship all at once.

The captain was plotting navigational routes with another map sprawled on the huge table in front of him, and he looked up and nodded to acknowledge Eri's presence. The crew-mate left the room and closed the door behind him, and the vantha waited as the captain continued to plot a route, making mental calculations as he jotted down on various parts of the map with a pencil. Finally, Dewarky finished jotting the last few words, and he looked up again, motioning for Eri to make himself comfortable on one of the chairs opposite the table.

Seating himself, the huge man waited for Eri to make himself at home before saying, "I apologize for making you wait. I was plotting something and did not want to lose my concentration. Though I'm lucky that I have my first-mate to review any mistakes for me, he's an excellent navigator and mathematician."

"I see that you have upheld your part of the bargain. Despite suffering from quite a few physical injuries, Jiercate is very much alive and I appreciate the last bit you did. My men have told me about it," The captain paused at this moment, and he reached under a table, fumbling about as he searched for something. His withdrew his hand, and placed a single hexagonal coin. It was unlike anything Eri had seen before, and when the captain gestured for Eri to take it the vantha picked it up to look carefully at it.

It was a steel-wrought coin that did not have the excellent craftsmanship that the official currency had, and he discovered that there was an engraving of the two twisted fingers on the hexagonal coin similar to that of the ship's flag.

"This is a sign that you are a friend of my organization. I have made many allies but also many enemies on the seas, and so if you ever find yourself accosted on the seas or on land with seamen, you might want to consider showing this coin. However, pay heed that while my allies will recognize you as a friendly associate of Dewarky, my enemies will cut you down the moment they see that coin."

"Any official or legal authority might also deem you a lawbreaker should you choose to show them this coin," Dewarky warned him, and Eri nodded his thanks before pocketing it. It was a double-edged sword, and it simply meant that he could not brandish that coin every time he got into trouble. It meant that he would have to access his situation carefully first.

"Now to get back to business," The captain said, now that his promised reward to the vantha was completed for making sure Jiercate returned alive. "Before I continue, I want your solemn vow that everything you will do today and everything I tell you will stay between us. Not a word about it to anyone else. I have shown good-will to you, and by my code of honour I expect you to follow it."

Eri assented quite seriously, and the captain gazed at Eri for a while as if sizing up his trustworthiness. The vantha looked calmly ahead and waited for Dewarky to make his decision, and finally the pirate sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"The note you sent me today, is a notice from my friend that one of my allies who is docked here together with me has betrayed me. I will not go into the details for you do not have to know that. It's also a long story and I do not feel like telling stories today. What you do need to know, is that he must be destroyed to prevent further damage to my fleet, and I cannot risk any of my men if I could help it. Do you understand, vantha? This means that I will claim ignorance if you failed in your job."

The captain eyed the vantha carefully as he delivered the catch of the job, but Eri remained unfazed. "I came here prepared for success, not failure," He replied calmly, looking the captain in the eye.

Dewarky was surprised at the response, and he stared at Eri for a moment before bursting into gruff laughter. The pirate had not expected a response in this manner, and after his laughter subsided he slammed his giant hands on the table several times, grunting approvingly, "That's the way, lad. If you ever want an exciting life on the high seas, just look for me and you'll know that The Floating Peace always has a space open for you."

The captain reached below him again, and placed several parchments on the table in front of him, pushing them forward to the vantha. He was now back to his 'business face' and he gestured for Eri to take a look at the parchments. "Do you know what these are, vantha?" He asked, though he meant it as a rhetorical question for he did not expect the vantha to answer.

Eri scrutinized the parchments carefully, and though it looked like a series of random scribblings, he could recognize some of the patterns from what he read in the Sunken Conundrum, Alvadas' underwater library. The captain opened his mouth to continue, but Eri raised his hand to halt the man, silently asking for more time and Dewarky simply uttered an "oh?" and leaned back again in interest to observe the vantha.

Eri furrowed his brows as he stared at one of the parchments, first recognizing the pattern right smack in the centre of the canvas. It was the most basic of sigils, and he recognized it as a basic focus sigil that simply acted as a storage of sorts for djed directed into it. This realization helped him to make the connection that the entire pattern on the parchment was a glyph, and he soon put himself into that mindset, looking around the focus for the symbols that would be characteristic of a barrier sigil.

He traced his finger along the lines and soon found the tell-tale signs of the barrier, and without long he made out the pattern of the entire glyph. He did not really like looking at other people's glyphs for he did not know their thought patterns and how they would arrange it, but he could do it with some time and he recognized that this glyph was meant to simply store a lot of djed, for it had several focus glyphs throughout the paper. What was interesting was that it had plenty of path sigils that led out of the barrier sigils into the edges of the parchment trailing off to nowhere. It was a glyph that would simply not work.

Eri slowed down his breathing as he gently brought djed up to his eyes, and soon the aura of the parchment in front of him shifted in focus after much concentration. It simply pulsated with djed, and the more the vantha studied the aura the more he was convinced that the glyph was chock full of spells generated by the use of fire reimancy. The tell-tale signs of transmuted res in the glyph's aura told him that, and he severed the flow of djed into his eyes as he looked up.

The captain had seen the range of expressions that went through Eri's face, and when the vantha was finally done with his study he simply asked, "So?"

"Glyphing, Captain Dewarky. I'm not too sure what's inside, but this glyph over here," Eri said, holding up the parchment that he had been studying, "Is filled with hot fiery death." The captain had expected him to say so, and he grunted with approval.

"That's what I thought. If you studied the rest of these parchments, it is actually a series of glyphs that are meant to be scattered through the ship at certain points. Now I will admit to you freely since you did to me that I dabble in glyphing myself, and I recognize the pattern. It was meant to set a ship ablaze when a certain trigger is tripped. The main problem is that I found this when I ordered my men to search the ship after I received that letter you gave me, and thank Laviku I did for I found these parchments hidden in various spots of my ship that no one would have noticed. The trigger was when I lay in my bed over there," Dewarky gestured to his bed in the far corner.

"If you look closely you'll see several rough carvings in my bed frames that were not there before. Those markings are the paths that would communicate the trigger of me applying pressure on my bed to the rest of the glyphs elsewhere. The intent was to set my ship ablaze while we were far out in sea where no one would be able to save us."

Eri understood, for a competent captain would only retire to his quarters when most planning matters on the ship was settled and that only happened after many bells after setting sail, which meant that the ship would be far out at sea.

"There is no doubt that this must be done by that traitor, for if the letter was right my other ship had not been downed by the Zeltivan navy but instead by this traitorous plan. I have investigated the matter and learned that the traitor's crew is out at Brega's enjoying themselves before they set sail tomorrow morning. They have left a couple of unlucky ones to guard their ship along with several mercenaries, but I doubt they will truly be alert for no one would want to mess with him due to his association to me."

"You already know what glyphing is, and that means your job will be much easier thankfully. I want you to plant these glyphs," Dewarky made a sweeping gesture over the scattered pieces of parchments that he placed on the table, "and make sure that petcher gets a taste of his own medicine. I want his ship in flames while out at sea, so you must absolutely not do anything that will cause suspicion. Get it? Do not touch any of his men, but feel free to get rid of any mercenaries you find. Buggers have a bad reputation around here anyway. As long as no one sees it his suspicions will not be raised."

The captain began to arrange the glyphs impatiently by stacks, placing several in one place while separating other pieces of parchment. "Four glyphs here, these are the focus and barrier ones. Hide them in the four opposite corners of the ship. The one here is the trigger, hide it somewhere in the captain's bunk. His ship has the same design and layout as mine, so there should be no problem finding your way. The rest of the pieces left over there are various incarnations of paths - do you know what those are?" He paused, looking questioningly at Eri.

"Barriers to manipulate released magic," The vantha replied, repeating the definition of a path sigil that he read in the book.

"A textbook answer, but yes you're right," The captain replied, pushing the three stacks of parchments towards Eri. "You can use the paths to make your life easier, and create impromptu glyphs to connect the rest of the spaces. All the glyphs you place must somehow be connected to one another. Most importantly, do it without drawing notice. Hide the parchments, and find some way to make your carvings inconspicuous. You're a smart one, I'm sure you'll have a way."

The captain thought for a moment, and he asked, "Do you have anything to carve or draw with?" Eri reached into his robes to show him his assassin's dagger, and Dewarky nodded. "Take a look at this blueprint of the ship's layout, and when you're done be on your way. My man will be waiting outside this door and he will point you in the right direction."

With that, the captain tossed out a large piece of waterproof parchment that contained a sketching of the ship's layout and leaned back again in his chair, rubbing his temples looking more tired than he actually was. Eri glanced quickly at the blueprint and headed for the door, but before he opened it the huge man addressed Eri again, "Don't fail me, word-runner. I reward competency well, but I also punish failure harshly. I've put faith in your abilities, do not let my trust be in vain."

Eri bowed slightly to the captain, turning around again to leave the room. A runty sailor was milling around looking bored, and he observed the vantha with interest as he left the room. It was clear that the sailor wanted to ask what this stranger had to do with his captain, but the discipline drilled by the captain into his men kept him in check and he held his tongue.

"I'm supposed to show you Captain Verun's ship. The Jagged Scythe, it's called. Beautiful ship," The man rambled on, bringing Eri out of the ship and pointing him in the direction of another similar ship that was similarly built as the one he had been on. He bid the man thanks, and he headed towards the ship. Unfortunately, there was still quite a few people milling around, and he could see quite clearly that The Jagged Scythe had a quite some activity. He would have to wait until nightfall when the crew left for Brega's before he could do anything, and so he went to a corner and sat against a tree in an inconspicuous corner near the pier, feigning fatigue to pretend that he was a random hobo resting.

Out of the corner of his eyes he would observe the people milling around and pick up anything useful he could use. For now, he would rest his body as his mind worked double-time in the observation and planning. He had no plans to fail at all.

A few bells after Evening

Leth traded places with Syna, and with the passing of time Eri's formed changed accordingly. His celestial form had a superior mental clarity that surpassed his mortal form's, and this aided him in piecing together the little information he had gathered while observing the group. Quite a while ago a large and noisy group of men had walked out of the ship - these were the lucky group that got to enjoy some rest and recreation at Brega's. The ethaefal had decided to stay back a little longer, and his patience was rewarded when several more sailors sneaked out of the ship later.

They had apparently no wish to be left behind, and Eri watched with interest as they returned several chimes later with more rough-looking men before paying them some coins and leaving. He had even edged as close as he dared to try to catch some snippets of conversation, but he heard enough to tell him that the remaining sailors who were meant to guard the ship relied on their reputation to keep the ship safe, hiring a few thugs to physically deter anyone else. Eri thanked his lucky stars for this, though he supposed that the discipline on this ship must be poor if the captain's men did not even follow orders.

He waited for half a bell more, and when it was evident that they were not returning, he pulled up his hood over his head to hide his horns and began to walk casually towards the ship. The pier was empty except for the various guards on duty of various ships, and he strolled to the two thugs standing outside The Jagged Scythe who were sharing a waterskin between them. They saw him approach and looked at him menacingly, as if daring him to come closer.

Eri adopted a gruff voice that imitated Dewarky's accent as much as he could, and told them, "Couple of guys sent me here to tell your leader something. It's about Verun possibly coming back earlier than expected." Fortunately the thugs had been briefed by the errant pirates about the circumstances they were in, and they gave each other a worried glance before one of them beckoned Eri to follow him, "I'll bring you to Desmond. You tell him what Mihen and gang told you."

The ethaefal chuckled inside, for he gained an essential piece of information unexpectedly. So the leader of the errant sailors was called Mihen. He would use this bit of information to help establish his authenticity. The guard stopped outside the captain's room after they entered the cabins, and rapped the door smartly, saying, "Gron, Mihen sent a messenger."

"Enter," a voice called out from inside and Eri ushered himself in mentally noting the leader's name, while the thug returned to his spot. Inside a confident and rugged looking man, sometime around in his mid-thirties stood eyeing a bottle of dark sloshing liquid as if considering if he should just misappropriate the expensive liquor at the expense of the sailors who hired him.

Eri closed the door behind him gently, and slowly began to extrude djed into his hands. He addressed the leader of the group of guards, "Mihen told me to pass you a message," before reaching into his robes. While on his way to the cabins his mind had already quickly formed a plan, and he decided that he should begin it right here. It was a stroke of luck that the leader of the group decided to use the captain's cabin as his centre of operations to organize his men for guard duty, and Eri intended to ruthlessly exploit this advantage.

He pretended to take out the message from his clothes, but 'accidentally' dropped the piece of parchment that he had been taking out, for there was no message at all. He apologized to the man, who seemed more interested in looking at that bottle and the leader waved his hand dismissively at the ethaefal as if to let him know that it was fine to take his time.

Eri apologized again, and he bent down to take the parchment. By then he had already extruded a sizeable amount of djed - well sizeable to the small amounts he usually produced during practice - and as he bent down he tilted his head to see that the leader was not looking at him. He quickly spread the djed that he produced on the bottom of the door, patting the djed into place like putty under the open space of the door as he bent down in slow motion.

As he slowly reached for the parchment, he quickly looked back again to ensure he was not being watched, and he tried his best to casually stuff the opening between the door and the ground with the little small rags of cloth that he had collected earlier. He had to prepare for the eventuality that certain noises might occur, and though he was confident that the thick wooden door was enough to soundproof the room, the noise would still escape from the openings under the door.

Out of the corner of his eyes he noticed that the thug began to look at him and wondering what took him so long, and he launched into a hacking cough while crouched, purposely dropping the piece of parchment again. "I'm sorry sir, health's been pretty weak these days," He said weakly, giving the man a pitiful smile. The leader sighed and gestured at him to carry on as he moved on to look at the books Captain Verun had stocked in the shelves.

When he was finally done, he picked up the parchment, and stored it back into his robes. Standing up, he strode slowly to the man.

Coughing again to attract the man's attention, he submissively repeated, "Mihen told me to give you this," reaching into his robes to take out that same piece of parchment, handing it to the man. As he did so, he reached into his robes with his other hand, and as the man stared confusingly at the meaningless jumble of symbols (meaningless to him at least), quickly drawing out his assassin's dagger and making a jab at the man.

His sudden movement caused the leader to dodge instinctively, though the dagger managed to land a glancing blow, and the mercenary narrowed his eyes, tossing the parchment to his side. Without a word, he attacked the ethaefal, and Eri dodged several blows, blocking one with his forearm as he punched the man in the stomach, moving up to slice with his dagger. The man ducked the slash and he grappled Eri's midriff, pushing him back against the door. Eri was glad he magically sound-proofed the door as the two of them thudded against the wood, and he raised his dagger to stab downwards.

The experienced fighter saw the glint of steel in the air and he quickly released his hold on the ethaefal, quickly leaping back to avoid being stabbed. Eri launched himself forward, slicing in the air with his dagger while gaining ground, managing to land a few shallow slashes on the man as he desperately ducked and backed away. There was another thud as the mercenary's back hit the edge of the huge table that Verun apparently kept in his quarters as if to copy Dewarky, and Eri grinned for he had the man cornered.

He leapt forward, slicing with his dagger, but his eyes widened when the man quickly used that short moment of time that he had to draw his gladius, forcing the ethaefal to twist his body in mid-leap and roll towards the side to avoid getting skewered on that blade. The mercenary cut forward with his gladius, but Eri used his hands to push himself towards the man while on the floor, kicking at his kneecap to destabilize the thug.

The leader wobbled as he tried to regain his balance, and Eri took that moment to quickly back away, keeping his dagger quickly and drawing both his blades. The screech of metal as he drew them was satisfying to hear, and he was once again glad that he had soundproofed the room. Assuming a combat stance, he hoped that no one would suddenly enter the room.

The mercenary did not look very happy when Eri drew his blades, realizing that his gladius might not be sufficient against two long swords. Eri did not give him time to think, and he was already channelling djed to his upper torso as he edged forward. He did consider the thought of enhancing his speed instead, but in such close quarters having an agile fleet-foot would not help him as much as having superior strength and speed with his swings. He also had to take care not to mess up the quarters so much as he would have to tidy it up later so that Verun would not be suspicious.

He launched a few customary swings at the man, alternating between his left and right sword as he slowly felt the djed rise to his upper torso, and with each swing his attacks got harder and harder, each shattering blow slamming both weapons closer to the man. The sound of the clash was absorbed by the rags, but if Eri did not finish this fast he risked being assaulted by everyone and essentially putting himself into a whole lot of trouble.

He gave a half-hearted thrust, fully expecting the man to dodge it, and he quickly used that shift in position to leap forward, slicing his sword sideways to sever the man's torso. The leader parried that slice with his gladius, though Eri's augmented strength proved to be straining to him, and Eri followed up by quickly stepping forward, unleashing a sidekick that destabilized the man. He took this window of opportunity to slash both swords down on the man's gladius, the combined blow landing on leader's weapon with unnatural force, forcing him to release the weapon in pain.

Eri quickly dropped his blades on the floor, taking care to drop them horizontally rather than vertically to avoid stabbing the wooden ground, releasing a disorienting punch in the face. He heard a soft crack as his unnatural strength broke the man's nose, and he edged nearer, slamming his elbow into the man's face. The mercenary staggered back, and Eri quickly drew his dagger, leaping forward to drive it unerringly into the man's chest. The man gasped in surprise, and Eri twisted the dagger in his chest, the wicked blade cutting into the heart and effectively ending his life.

He caught the man as he fell, slowly assisting him as the body dropped to the ground before releasing his hold. He did not wish to create unnecessary noise and allow the man's corpse to thud noisily on the floor to arouse suspicion. He chose to keep the dagger embedded in the man's chest to keep the bleeding to a minimum, instead pushing the man's body underneath the huge table from the captain's side so that people entering the room will not see the body unless they walked around the table and looked underneath.

The ethaefal quickly looked around, tidying up any papers or personal effects that may have been displaced during their duel and he sheathed his blades back into the harness strapped on his back, placing the man's gladius together with his body underneath the table.

Eri forced himself to control his breathing as he calmed down, eyes darting about furiously as he searched for a good place to plant the parchment that stored the trigger sigil. He settled on the bed, and he walked over to lift the mattress. He coughed as he released several years of dust into the air, and it was evident that the bed had always been in this position since it was placed there. That was exactly what Eri wanted to know, and he slipped the parchment on wooden bed frame, dropping the mattress back down to cover it. It was highly unlikely that the captain would suddenly check under his bed's mattress when he had never done so.

He took out his assassin's dagger and began carving path sigils underneath the bed frame. At the start he was pretty slow, but as time went on he began to get better at it for he was merely repetitively carving the same bunch of barrier sigils that would act as a path. He thought about the most effective way to do it and he remembered that the back of the captain's quarters also led to the storage room from blueprints that Dewarky showed him earlier.

He decided to do it from below, and he sighed as he reached underneath the bed, meticulously carving the tiny sigils that on the wall that separated the captain's quarters with the storage room. He tried not to cough from the years of dust underneath the bed, and finally he was done. Brushing the cobwebs off his nose, he kept his dagger again, though within easy reach within his robes, and he left the room, opening the door tentatively.

A guard walked pass, and he stopped the man, saying, "Gron wants to see you," and he opened the door for the guard as he entered the room. As the man entered the room, he quickly drew his dagger and plunged it into the man's kidneys from behind, twisting it savagely as he covered his victim's mouth to prevent him from yelling out. He used his foot to close the door behind them, and he gently lowered his victim's corpse to avoid unnecessary noise. Wiping the blood on the man's clothes, he lifted the body taking care to flip it over so that the wound was facing upwards to avoid blood dripping on the ground, grunting as he did so, and moved it over and stash it underneath the desk. He did not drag the body for that would leave a trail of blood on the floor.

Eri quickly walked over to the short sword that the man had dropped upon being stabbed and stored it underneath the desk as well. He would have a field day cleaning up this mess later, but that would be later.

He walked out of the room again, and he did not meet anyone as he found his way to the storage room. The far corner of the storage room would be one of the ends of the ship, and he quickly strode there, looking around for areas to stash the first of the four focus glyphs. He quickly found a bunch of heavy barrels probably containing rum, and it was with difficulty that he shifted the barrels away so that he could reach the one closest to the corner of the wall. He took out the parchment and placed it under the barrel at the end.

Eri doubted that the pirates would go through their entire supply of ale in the first day of sailing to be able to discover his hidden parchment, and so from there he took care to carve more path sigils on the wooden ground, carving enough to connect them to the middle of the room. He grunted as he lifted the heavy barrels back into position to cover the glyphs he made on the floor. He chose to lead the runes to where a floorboard was loose, and he pried up the wooden plank, shoving in a parchment containing path sigils into the hole created before replacing the floorboard. From his understanding of the glyph in the parchment it was able to link paths in a small radius without physically connecting glyphs, which made Eri's job much more convenient.

He looked around to find the wall connecting the quarters to the captain's quarters, and he traced his steps mentally in his mind, finding which spot in the wall would correspond to where he carved the path sigil underneath the bed and he walked towards that direction. Kneeling down, he carved a single small path sigil at the bottom of the wall that would connect the two rooms glyph-wise, and his job here was done.

Now he had to find the other three corners of the ship, and he headed first towards the general bunks without much incident. The bunks were empty of course, for the crew was away enjoying themselves, and he began lifting the mattress from various beds to see which one was the dirtiest. That also meant that the chances of the mattress being lifted would be lesser, and he slotted the second focus parchment underneath the dirtiest one he found, following the same reasoning he used for the captain's bed. He even sympathized with whoever might be sleeping on this bed when the spell activated for he would be first to get utterly roasted.

The next step would be tedious, and he spent quite a while carving a series of path sigils as inconspicuously as he could, putting a path sigil at regular intervals under various beds and hidden various spots that would connect the crew bunk to the rest of the glyphs he had already placed. He was sure that time was ticking as he laboured over glyphing and hiding of parchments, and he forced himself to work faster for he still had to somehow clear up the bodies underneath the desk.

The only thing that comforted him was that his glyphing was getting progressively better as he had to carve the very same sigils repetitively though that was pretty mind-numbing. He had to concentrate not to mess up the sigils and he watched apathetically as his hands moved mechanically, the motions required to make a path sigil already memorized by his muscles.

He finally found himself near the captain's quarters, and he ended the sequence by carving a small path sigil at the bottom of the wall just like he did in the storage room, making mental note to repeat that sigil at the same spot but from inside the captain's cabin to connect the entire array properly.
