Purpose: Getting a job

After a bell or so of wandering, Amarhyl found herself outside of a place called ‘The Sunken Conundrum’. It was a curious name, and a curious building. She stopped a passerby to ask what it was, and her face lit up as the word “library” was heard. She turned back to the door, paused, and then opened it.

What she saw was completely unexpected. She took an involuntary step back, fearful that the water she saw here would spill out of the building. When it didn’t her brows knitted together in both confusion and fascination. The doorway was completely filled with water, yet it was perfectly still like a sheet of glass. She reached out tentatively to touch it, and her hand slid easily through its surface. When she pulled back, the water stayed still, not even a ripple crossing its surface. It was then that she noticed the sign on the back of the door. The young woman’s head tilted slightly. How curious…

She took a breath, and then stepped through into the water.
Immediately she felt something along her ribs and neck. Reaching a hand to her neck she felt tiny gills. She exhaled in surprise, a stream of bubbles leaving her mouth. She moved forward, feeling the water filter through the gills and fill her lungs with air. It was the strangest feeling she had ever experienced, one that she was sure would take a while to get used to. She spent a minute getting accustomed to swimming through the room, and then went in search of the desk.

The desk wasn’t hard to find, and soon Amarhyl was standing before it being scrutinized by the Head Librarian.
”Hello… I was wondering, do you need any help here?
The librarian raised her eyebrows and stayed silent, prompting the young woman to rephrase her query.
”Sorry, I mean to say, I would like a job here, if you have the space for me.”

The Head Librarian was quiet for a brief moment more, before she set down the book she was holding.
”It is possible. What are your skills young lady? I don’t let just anyone handle my books.”
”Well, I’m a proficient reader.” It was true. Amarhyl spent many a day lost in books when she lived with her father; she often forgot meals because of it. ”I can also write well and I know how to bind a book too.”
Again the librarian paused to study her.
”How are you with people?
”I… it’s one of the things I am unsure of. But I’m trying to talk more openly…”

The silence stretched out for a few moments before the librarian gave a curt nod.
”Very well, I shall give you a job here. You seem like the sort of person who will respect my books. You will be re-shelving and making sure everything is orderly, along with helping people find what they need. In the unlikely event that one of the books needs seeing to, you can help with that. Understand?”
Amarhyl nodded immediately. The librarian didn’t seem like a very amiable person, but that didn’t matter. She would be working with books after all!
”Go and return this book to it’s correct place.”
The young woman took the proffered book and hurried to complete the task. Well, hurried as quickly as is possible through water.

Swimming was not something that came naturally to Amarhyl, and swimming with a hefty book in one hand was even harder. As well as slowing her, the tome also put her off balance, so she ended up drifting to the right a lot. She tucked it beneath her arm instead, which was marginally easier, and instead of kicking out with her legs, she used the shelves to move herself forward.

The book was one of philosophy, and somehow she managed to locate the correct section of the library rather quickly. The books were alphabetical, and with this one starting with ‘B’, it seemed she would have to make her way up to the topmost shelves. With a few strong kicks, she propelled herself upwards and then slid the book into its proper place.

Upon reaching the desk once more the librarian gave her a smile and a nod. It rather surprised the young woman, since their earlier interaction had been a lot colder.
”Nice and quick, very good. My name is Hinrane Morcer, Head Librarian. I do hope you enjoy working here.”
Amarhyl returned her smile. ”Amarhyl Summers. I’m sure I will Ma’am, thank you so much!”
The librarian smiled again. ”Call me Hinrane dear.”
