[Antinous Grounds][Training] Meeting Place [Sighard]

Laurel smiled as the hook set behind the shield and she pulled hard, leaning back and putting both arms into it. Once she got that shield away from him, the rest of the battle should be easy and she could keep him at a distance with the spear-point or axe-head until the final strike.

"It's almost ov-" She began to taunt, cut short by surprise when Sighard used the shield to swing under and in, aiming a thrust at her inner arm. With the shield hooked and Sighard's weight with it she couldn't move her arm fast enough. The blow struck hard and the mail in the joint dug into the arming jacket below the armour. The mail didn't splint but the force of the blow didn't stop. It traveled through the armour and jacket and straight to the bone.

"Gah!" Laurel yelped, her hand instinctively releasing the halberd. No longer supported, the head of the polearm fell sharply to the ground with a wet crunch and crisp, heavy thunk. The sudden force of the fall pulled the weapon from her other hand. Disarmed and with no way to retrieve the halberd without exposing herself to Sighard's blade, she instinctively reached to her hip where her dagger would normally hang. She gripped only the cold air beside her plate. She'd forgotten the dagger and now Sighard was close, leaving her unarmed.

Unarmed but never without a weapon. That was what her second Patron Knight had told her. He also said that the only one doing it right was the fighter who won. She decided to try something new then, maybe surprise Sighard and throw him off the game until she could either finish him off or retrieve the halberd safely. She'd been trying to gain distance this whole battle but without the halberd, there was little point and maybe Sighard would expect her to move away still.

She stepped closer. If this had been real combat and not a spar, she'd try to gouge his eyes out but that could blind Sighard for life, not something Laurel was trying for so she focused on something Sighard had that she didn't. Hair. She reached up with her arm as she stepped forward and tried to grab a nice big handful of Sighard's hair. At the same time she reached for his wrist holding the sword and tried to sweep his leg with a kick. She pushed forward hard and tried to knock him down.

It was the same move that had made her keep her once flowing hair shaved down to nothing but she'd never attempted it herself and it put her at serious risk if it failed. The move relied as much on leverage and the slick snow and ice for tripping Sighard as it did on pure strength but Laurel, after a life spent in heavy armour, was certainly no weakling. If nothing else, yanking his hair from his scalp would provide enough pain to possibly distract him from his own attacks without causing permanent or serious injury.

It was an all or nothing move but she was an all or nothing girl.

[Antinous Grounds][Training] Meeting Place [Sighard]

Tch. . . a subtle click of his tongue against the frozen roof of his mouth rasped but a faint puff of air that spurted in a cloud and dissipated almost as quickly as it had come. He embraced the controlled thud of metal against metal, that feeling of harmonious mobility where the collision elicited results which catered to his aims and effectively disarmed his opponent. Sighard offered the falling weapon a cursory glance and jumped forth with a prominent step that pressed the pole arm deeper into the layers of snow with a sickening crunch. In practiced form he drew his blade closer to his side and raised his shield defensively upwards. This spar is over.

They were trained to recognize the universality of submission. A helpless raise of the palms or defeated countenance often conveyed the feelings of loss which followed such an occurrence as disarmament, and as such knights were taught to respond accordingly. In the event one did not exhibit these signs, such as Laurel so elegantly had poised, then it was natural, inborn instinct to continue, to drive forth until victory had been attained. The girl’s presumptions of a clever surprise were novel indeed, but they were stupid and sacrificial. Knights are better left alive, learn this.

A wild, animalistic approach was heralded by her rather heavy footfalls through the snow, a breaking of distance even the deafest of men could follow. Sighard accommodated this latch ditch effort appropriately, never losing composure, but rather adjusting his own footwork which was nimble and prepared to break inwards at the slightest of movements. Gingerly he bounced on the balls of his cold, wet feet and waited, his eyes pressed in observation in order that he might react to. . .

Now! He cut rapidly inwards at her approach, and his arm took the form of a whip, snapping low where she otherwise aimed high. His blade earned him the superior reach, and so accorded him more breathing room when dealing with her reckless charge. She’d not have the length to grasp hair or wrist by the time she felt the cutting edge on the side of her knee, where plate often connected at the joints and was a notoriously weaker area. “Back!” His shout synchronized with his blow and he urged submission with a stern countenance. Unnecessary injuries would be an unfortunate thing indeed.

[Antinous Grounds][Training] Meeting Place [Sighard]

She'd barely even gotten close to Sighard when she felt the strike to her knee. Her leg buckled and she went down, catching herself with her hands before she could hit the cold ground with her face. Snow clouded up around her and she heard Sighard's command.

Hardly needed given the circumstances. She'd forgotten that she'd been barely trained and no older than fourteen when that move had worked on her but still she gave it her all. That was good. She would also be dead. That was not so good. She put her weight on one hand and lifted the other up to signal submission.

"Done, done." She said and stood up. She hated this; losing. But she knew the move was desperate before she tried it and now was paying the consequences. She didn't like to signal defeat too early though. She saw little point in it. If you lost your weapon on the battlefield, you couldn't ask submission from your foe. It was a fight to the last breath and you could never just give up.

So Laurel didn't like to give up in training either, not until she was certain that she would be dead in real combat.

"Good spar. I'm going to wait around for a bit but it was nice meeting you, Sighard. Hopefully we'll do it again sometime."

OOCI figured that we'd end it here since your signature says you're going on vacation and the battle was more or less over. If you'd like a closing post, go for it or I can just drop the link off to be graded. Good match though, I had fun. EDIT: Sighard told me he will not be posting a closing post.
