Marcus responded quickly out of excitement, "My name is Marcus..." he paused and cleared his throat, allowing himself to slow down and enunciate. This was no time to sound like a giddy child. "My name is Marcus Braeden," this instance he spoke clearly and with respect. After all, Marcus was sitting face to face with one of those people he aspired to be, a Syliran Knight. Everything was so official about the man that sat before Marcus. His name was followed by a Wing, then a Company, followed by Regiment, and then of course the Quadron. It was almost overwhelming, but then Marcus pictured himself giving the very same introduction at some point in the future. He sure did like the sound of it.

Next, Marcus was asked of his skill set. Marcus was confident that his response would be satisfactory, despite lacking combat experience.

"Well, I am a weaponsmith by trade, so I am familiar with weapons, although not necessarily on the combat side of things." Marcus glanced around the room in which he sat, and sure enough he could find a few decorative weapons adorned on the walls. It was typical of such a grand hall such as the one the knights resided in. Marcus continued, "I can tell you that the longsword hung on the wall to your left has a steel blade, roughly 40 inches long, and iron hilt suited to a two hand grip. I can also make out a design that runs along the flat side of the blade, most likely etched since it shows up in steel much better than an engraving. I would also bet that the tang, which holds the blade and hilt together, is a rat tail tang, meaning the sword would most certainly be broken in any form of combat, seeing as it is hung on a wall rather than on your side." Marcus' knowledge of weapon anatomy and construction was not something unique to him. The first thing one should learn before becoming a weaponsmith would be the anatomy. The real challenge of smithing comes in the construction process.

A general knowledge on weapons was not the only sort of skill that Marcus knew. While it was not exactly orthodox he did slightly know his way around a longsword.

"Although I lack the training that the order provides, I have experience using a longsword, preferably one handed if that helps you. My brother and I sparred quite a bit, and I actually had the privilege of sparring a squire, Sighard, if you know the name," Marcus paused once more, searching his mind to see if there was anything he was forgetting. He decided that he had given all the necessary information. "Well that is all I have to offer you, I know I have much to learn, but whatever training is coming, I think I can take it" he smirked, remembering that he been through worse.

"Yes." the Knight continued. Attempting to matriculate into the Mage Knights was somewhat unlike becoming a more traditional Knight. Not only where they vastly fewer in numbers, but their training regimen was focused differently. "The Mage Knights work toward the same goals as all the Knights of Syliras, but their requirements are very different from a typical squires, though they are every bit as strict. Just as a Knight must be skilled in both lore and warfare, a Mage Knight must be skilled in magics not only for war, but for defense and utility purposes as well."

In that respect, the girl already had an excellent plan for magic, as Ser Erik was just about to comment up, "Glyphing is typically a branch that every recruit is suggested to understand, if not practice. It is one of the most flexible and useful sects of all magic, so your interest in that is well founded. In fact, I already have a few mental potentials for your Patron. Now, that aside the one new Mage Knights are typically referred to is Steward Knight Equuleus, an extremely skilled Mage Knight, and the leader of one of the two companies comprised solely of Mage Knights. It would be inevitable that you would be speaking to him." The Knight glanced down at a few documents, pulling forth his quill before dipping it into fresh ink and skillfully marking down various notations. It seemed he had completed these gestures before, as his ability to quickly and legibly scribe notes was quite stunning, despite missing his dominant hand.

"Those who come to the Knights looking to become a Mage Knight are few, but fearsome. I will then expect great things from you, so that the reputation of the Mage Knights are upheld. All the skills you've mentioned will be covered within your training, and I do believe you have the drive to train and continue through the rigors of being a Mage Knight, so I hereby declare you fit to receive your final review."

OOCAlrighty, I just need to get with Dusk and see what she wants to do for Harper's 'checkout'. Then...the hard part (training and adventure!) begins.

Marcus

The elder Knights eyes twinkled slightly at Marcus's response. Now this was an unusual turn of events. Typically weaponsmiths stuck to their forges, worried more about perfecting the skill and recipes of their forefathers than sacrificing their time and efforts for the cause of the Knights. Weaponsmiths were artists, just like any other craftsman, and while many Knights had a hobby, it was interesting to see such an artist aspiring to be a Knight. Not only this, but it seemed this young man knew what he was talking about as well. "Oh?" the Sergeant proclaimed, leaning back in his chair, his eyes turning to glance over at the sword Marcus had been describing. It was true, the weapon was mainly ornamental, but what impressed him the most was the dimensional awareness Marcus had. He wasn't just some novice Weaponsmith, his skill must have extended far beyond a few crude attempts at weaponry.

"You are correct. Don't know much about smithing a weapon myself, but the balance on that one always felt off. Back in the day, I enjoyed a weapon with the balance say, three or four fingers from the hilt, that one there is more about six or seven." Ser Erik commented. It was as much as he could offer on the subject. He knew his way around a longsword for one reason, feeling the weight, the speed, the grip, and the feel in his hands, echoing throughout his body. Day after day, even in his dreams he remembered the abilities and limitations of his weapon from decades of constant use.

"Confident then, are you? Good. Very good. Your knowledge as a smith won't go to waste. What you lack in proper warfare will be learned in time. For some Patrons, they would rather teach a man that knows nothing at all, then try to relearn an individual taught the wrong way. Some come to us having spent their lives fighting for themselves, but when you fight for a cause, for your companions, and for your city, there are subtle differences that can be...difficult to let go of. If you are prepared to learn these skills, and dedicate yourself to your own perfection as a Knight and an example of Syliras' honor then ready yourself, Marcus Braeden, for you will be evaluated by the Grandmaster and judged. Do you accept the upcoming responsibilities?" Erik had talked plenty, and it was time to let Marcus have his turn. There were times when young men had come before him with intentions less than noble in joining the Knights, but when faced with the prospect of presenting themselves to the Grandmaster himself, turned away and were never heard from again. It was time to see how far Marcus's dedication ran.

OOCAssuming Marcus is prepared for the final step, I will get with Dusk and turn it over to her for whatever Marcus may have to do to finalize his squireship!

Upcoming responsibilities? Marcus assumed grueling training, harsh conditions, and many bruises to come. It didn't matter to him, he was determined to achieve his goal, just to prove to those who held him back, Ravok, the bandits, that he was entirely capable of doing something great. Now it was time to meet the grand master of the knights, as he almost did a year ago. But this time, there wasn't anyone to steal him away.

Marcus gazed at the elder knight and simply stated three words, "Yes I do."

"Aye, I see," Harper said when Ser Erik explained the goals of the Mage-Knights. It made perfect sense that the Mage-Knights not only must know an offensive magic (or several offensive magics), but also know supportive magics. And Harper knew that Glyphing would come in handy; so much could be accomplished with it.

"Steward Knight Equuleus?" Harper asked, mostly to herself. Sounded like an interesting character. "I'll report to him as soon as possible. Thank you so much, Ser, and I promise that you won't regret this." Harper stood up, the chair scooting behind her making a scraping noise against the floor. "I'll dedicate myself to my studies, to the Knights, and to the people of Syliras wholeheartedly."

OOCWasn't sure how to really close this, so it might be a tad awkward! But anyway, just message me and let me know what Dusk wants to do. C:

Harper

A few days passed before Harper heard anything from the Knights regarding her recruitment, and when she did it was surely rather unexpected. Deep in the middle of the night, when most good boys and girls were sleeping, there was a quick and confident knock on her door.

When she finally opened it, the flickering torchlight would reveal an alien creature towering over her. Just over seven feet tall, with marble-smooth skin that glowed opalescent in the light. Shining silver hair fell to its shoulders, the last two inches of it tipped in pure white, and the bangs were the same paler shade. Even more shocking, great ebony horns burst out from behind its temples and twisted behind its head to curl beneath its ears. Robes of black velvet billowed down to the floor, the sleeves cuffed with silver embroidery in various glyphs.

"Oh," it said, blinking milky, clouded eyes a moment and looking for all the world as if he hadn't expected someone to answer his knock. "Sorry. I didn't... it's awfully late, isn't it? I should have made an appointment. Not that I would have kept it. You are Harper, aren't you?" he asked, for at some point in his rambling the voice identified the fae creature as a male. "I'm Ser Equuleus. I was told I should be talking to you. I think it was yesterday. Or maybe last week. Either way, here I am."

Erik nodded at Marcus' decisive answer, and a smile twitched across his face. "Well then. All that's left to do is meet the boss. Come on then," he said, shoving up to his feet and waving his good hand for Marcus to follow him. A few steps across the room led to an unnoticed door hidden away in a corner. A discreet knock, a call through the wood, and then he pulled open the door and nodded for Marcus to head in.

Beyond was a large room with floor-to-ceiling windows taking up an entire wall. A pair of knights stood quietly, their armor bearing not the tree that usually painted the breastplate but a bronze key. They nodded to Erik, who gave another wave before he ushered Marcus in and shut the door behind him.

This left Marcus relatively alone, though there was a pitcher of apple cider and few clean wooden mugs stacked on a table in front of the couch. Beside

Perhaps half a bell passed before footsteps sounded and Grandmaster Loren Dyres entered with another pair of knights at his back. "Ah, another recruit," he said, pleased to find him waiting there. "Welcome, my friend. I'm Master Dyres. Why don't you tell me why you've decided to join us?" he said, settling onto one of the couches and reaching out to pour himself a mug of cider.

Marcus soon found himself standing in a large room as Ser Erik walked away. At the entrance stood two knights, seemingly standing watch. They made no indications of addressing Marcus so he waited silently for Master Loren to appear. The wait felt like forever as Marcus became more and more nervous, but he hid it well enough. He seemed composed on the outside, but inside he was tearing himself apart. He was about to stand before Loren Dyres, the grandmaster of the Syliran Knights, the organization he dreamed to possibly be apart of. Mentally, he was ill prepared for the event, and when Loren did finally appear, his legs slightly trembled before he managed to recover them.

Loren's first question was simple in nature, but Marcus' answer was complicated."Well Ser" Marcus paused, wondering what his true intentions were. While many joined to protect the city and their loved ones, Marcus began to think his intentions were less than noble. He wanted to join for himself, to seek something greater in life. It was all out of wanderlust. It wasn't necessarily immoral or anything, but it certainly felt less noble than protecting who you love. But it was Marcus' answer, and he had no intention of lying to Loren Dyres. He continued "Well, joining the Syliran Knights has been something of a dream of mine for quite a while. I guess I just want more out of life, rather than hunkering down in a shop or house. I want to make a difference in this world, and the Syliran Knights seem to have been doing that for hundreds of years..." Marcus paused again, remembering yet another reason to join with the knights. Growing up in Ravok, kidnapped by rogues... he had seen the bad in this world firsthand. "...I also feel I have remained neutral in the way of things for too long, and it is time I finally pick a side. I have seen things, bad things, and I just want to stand against them..." Marcus let out a sigh as he finished.

[Syliras Location] Recruitment Office

Postby Harper on February 1st, 2012, 7:49 pm

The knock on her door in the middle of the night had startled Harper from her deep thoughts. She wasn't one to sleep very much, so she simply sat on the edge of her bed, lost deep in the void that is her mind.

She stood up quickly when she heard the knock, startled. She instinctively held up her hands as if to ready herself to use magic. She made her way to the door, opened it quickly and gasped. What she saw before her was not anything close to what she had been expecting. The first thing she noticed was how incredibly tall the being was. Harper was a short, thin girl, so she was used to others towering over her. But this large man (or whom she guessed to be man) took "being tall" to a whole other level.

When the man started talking, it snapped her back to reality. Who was this guy? He answered her question soon enough, of course, announcing that he was Ser Equuleus. This was the guy she'd been waiting for a week to hear back from? She honestly had thought that the knights had forgotten about her, simply choosing not to pursue her. Well, to her surprise, they sent an alien to fetch her in the middle of the night!

"Right, yes, I am Harper," She spoke slowly and firmly, as if to make sure that the milky-eyed man would understand her. He seemed to be drunk, or on some kind of drug. Why on earth would the Knights put this man in charge of...anyone?

"I'm sorry, I just wasn't expecting you, Ser Equuleus. I thought we were supposed to meet several days ago, but you never showed up... I'm sorry, but are you okay? You seem a bit dazed...

Marcus Braeden

At first glance it may have seemed as if Loren reclined on the couch - leaning back, one leg crossed over the other, an indolent hand curled around his mug. But Marcus was learning to observe the people around him more closely, and so he would catch the constant state of readiness that Loren kept himself in, or was kept in by his position. It was there in the tilt of his chin, the grip of his fingers, and the total comprehension of every inch of the room.

He nodded at Marcus' answer, and a smile twitched at his lips. "I always approve of a man choosing sides, even if the side he chooses is my enemy's. Better to know where he stands than to wonder. Well," he said, leaning forward a bit and taking a moment to sip his cider as he watched the boy closely. "You've a hint of Ravok in your accent. Will that be a problem, or something to propel you deeper into the arms of the civilization we're striving to create here?"
