Exploring is something we Charodae are very fond of and well known for. The sea is a mysterious place filled with lost treasures, and we are one of the few races able to explore it's entirety. Today I was wandering through the reef and came across a cave, not unusual, the sea is littered with them. Ignoring caution, typical me, I swam in, webbed fingers caressing the walls as I swam through the inky darkness. I've been above water at night, the dark up there is as daylight when compared to the darkness of the water. Up there...it is only a handful of hours before the sun is up. But here there are places the light never reaches, places where the darkness, so engulfing, almost chokes you. And those are the places the darkness never leaves. This cave was one such place. The cave became more narrow the farther I swam in, until the point where it felt as if the walls were closing in, until I could lift one tentacle and touch the wall to the left of me, and lift the other and touch the right. I won't deny that I was afraid, cramped places make me uneasy. After swimming for a small eternity, I was about to turn back when I could make out a faint blue glow up ahead. I glanced back at the distant entrance, I'd already gone this far, what was the point in going back? I swam on, toward the pale light and emerged in a huge cavern. The light was all around me, seeming to source from nowhere. Then it hit me, it was the water itself that was glowing, something I'd heard legends about but never encountered before. I scanned the waters, swimming forward. No fish, and the smooth stones beneath me sloped upward smoothly, which meant there was air above them. I felt a grin tug the corners of my mouth, I was curious, so I swam to the surface, head slipping through the water silently. I looked up. The cavern was huge, I could just about see the roof. Turning my gaze downward I looked to the pool's shore and promptly froze. Two male humans were sat around a campfire. One had it's back to the pool, the other was sitting parallel to it. I sunk beneath the surface and swam down to the stony bottom, back to the tunnel. I crawled backwards and my hand landed landed on something sharp. I glanced down, creamy pale eyes landing on the intricately carved corner of what I could only assume was a box. I looked back to the shore. They wouldn't notice me, the pool was too deep. I turned back to the box and started moving the stones until I eventually uncovered a large chest. I wrapped webbed fingers around the handle and pulled it up, then, throwing myself underneath it, carried it back through the tunnel and back home. In that chest I found a blank book, the one I am writing in currently, a short book written in a language I don't speak and a pair of matching anklets. There was also a smaller, but still fairly large, box, which I'm yet to open. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to sate my curiosity though. |
