Winter 511 AV
Cygnus stood frozen, gazing at the ethereal ships drifting in and out of the White Harbor. A blue and white sea bird drifted towards the pier where she stood watching, and disgorged its load of eager visitors, revealing it to be a cleverly structured boat. The new arrivals added to the crowd of traders bustling about with their wares and native Konti visiting the harbor. She was an island of stillness amidst them.
Cygnus liked to come to the harbor often. The glassy waters reminded her of her fall from Leth's realm: not a particularly comforting memory really: whenever she thought of that night, cold fear gripped her heart and a breathtaking homesickness welled up in her gut. But nevertheless she came here repeatedly, and it was because she felt like it was her lifeline. Sometimes she imagined that if she only jumped back in to the water and kept swimming, deeper and farther away from the White Isle, she could find her way back to that wonderful, celestial place that haunted her every dream...
Eyes downcast, Cygnus turned back and forced herself to peruse the wares of the stalls lining the harbor. Rich fabrics and intricate pottery and glassware bedazzled the eye, but she was drawn to a display of cages, one of which was populated by cute little songbirds, brightly colored in pastels and twittering in beautiful sopranos. She almost asked the trader how much, but withheld. These birds were healthy and plump, and she tended to only take the injured.
Eventually, she walked towards the house at the common gate, ready to reenter the city. She felt both triumphant and miserable, and the warring emotions negated each other on the canvas of her face, so that it was as smooth as a blanket of snow. Once again, she had managed to honor the new life Leth had given her, a rebirth into her past Konti life, but the desire to rejoin him in death was a painful urge that whispered persistently in her ears.
"Greetings Muti," she murmured placidly to the green-eyed Konti as she strolled toward the ornamented gateway to Mura.
