The White Seal's Lullaby Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us At rest in the hollows that rustle between. Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow; Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease! The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas. ~Rudyard Kipling~ Name: Lase Race: half Akvatari/half Svefra Gender: Female Birthdate&Age: Spring 1, 495 AV [16] Height: 5'8" Weight: 100lbs Pod: None, though she hopes to join one. Lase is currently in the Northern Suvan. Being half Svefra, Lase has the racial blue eyes, which hide under a long fringe of dark reddish-brown hair. You can barely see her eyes under her long locks, and it's a miracle how she can see. The Akvatari part of her ancestry is a tad bit more noticeable. Instead of legs, she has the slick body of a fur seal. It's light grey in colour, with a few dark grey speckles. Instead of feet, she has tail flippers. Her body is toned and slightly muscular, especially her tail, because she has to swim most of the time. She usually attempts to keep her hair tangle and sand free, although most attempts are ruined when she is swimming. Lase has fair skin, unscathed on the first look, but there are minuscule scars from the few times she has gotten herself caught in a Svefra's net. Another distinguishing mark is two red bands tattooed on her lower left forearm. Lase has forgotten where she got the tattoos, but she doesn't mind. Of course, growing up in a pod means she has a pod tattoo. The tattoo is a red starfish, located in the small of her back. Currently, she is the only living person that she knows of with the tattoo. Her hollow bones give her a lighter than average weight, which doesn't really affect her swimming, but gives other people an edge if they wanted to carry her, or say, lift up a net that she was entrapped in and help her out. Lase exists in a state of constant melancholy. She doesn't understand why a god or goddess hasn't claimed the Akvatari, even though something must have happened to create the race. She will spend long periods of time pondering questions and imagining poetry. Around other people, this melancholia is often overshadowed with the convivial and happy-go-lucky spirit of the Svefra. There's always a small bit of observation and sadness in her eyes, but no one usually sees that, considering her fringe is in the way. She is stubborn on some subjects, and compliant on others, but overall she is difficult to get along with. She tends to keep people at a distance, trying not to form relationships, simply because she doesn't want them to end. Lase believes all beginning have an end, including friendships that would seem to last forever. In fact, Lase still believes her entire pod is alive, just on a long journey she couldn't attend, because she has the memory of them burning and dying on lock and key in the forgotten corner of her subconscious. She has dropped the name 'Starwave', though, because she hasn't seen her pod for a long time. Lase spends her days observing, thinking, and swimming. She wants to learn to paint, play an instrument, or something like that, but it's very difficult to paint underwater, and many instruments do not go well with water. So instead, she'll think up poetry and recite her poems to the random sea creatures that happen to drift by her. Lase's main spot is a large rock that juts out a mile from shore, which has enough space for her to comfortably sit on. She never writes down her poetry; only remembers the ones she liked. Lase will usually only sleep for a few hours at a time, either in small underwater caves or on sandy beaches. Occasionally, when she is far away from any beaches or caves, she will take many short catnaps to make sure she doesn't get tangled up in nets or fishing line. Lase's diet consists of fish, seaweed, mollusks and other plants, though considering how inept she is at catching fish, she'll usually just eats oysters and aquatic plants. Lase had a happy, if not so normal, childhood. It all started when an Akvatari, named Barua, decided to visit the Suvan Sea. She flew the entire distance, only stopping to rest for short periods of time and eat. When she arrived at the Suvan, she was overtaken by the beauty. She flew over the water, taking in the sites of the sea. When it was almost dark, Barua realized how exhausted she was. There was no land in sight, only some ships clustered together. She saw people on deck, enjoying themselves, and watched quietly from the air for a few minutes, watching. Abruptly, she fell to the exhaustion and fell from the sky, landing on the middle of one of the boats. People came to see the strange creature that had fallen from the sky with the wings of a butterfly and the body of a seal. Some knew the name: it was an Akvatari. Barua suffered from bruises, cuts, a concussion - even a broken rib. The Svefra didn't want to risk the Akvatari dying on board, for it was such an admirable creature, able to swim and fly. They took their best healer -- a young man named Maroon Starwave -- to Barua, to heal her. While she was in his care, the two fell in love. When she was well again, instead of going away, Barua stayed with the Starwave pod. She could fly to the clouds with ease, able to look every way for anything. She could easily swim into the sea to fix nets, catch fish, and anything else that was needed. Three years after Barua's abrupt arrival, she became pregnant. It wasn't a difficult pregnancy, though she had to take it easy. When Lase was born, she was welcomed into the pod as one of their own. Each day, Barua took Lase into the water to teach her how to swim, and of course, Lase was a fast learner. All was well. Thirteen years after Lase's birth, and life as she knew it disappeared. A fierce storm rocked the boat, ramming it into unseen rocks. Lightning set it on fire, and many of the Starwaves burned to death. Lase and Barua would have been able to save themselves, being able to fly or swim with extreme ease, but Barua couldn't leave without Maroon. She flew as fast as she could to a nearby rock, Lase's favorite rock to sit on of today, and set her down. She folded a a golden arm band with Lase's name engraved onto it that was going to be a gift for her 14th birthday into her hands, and flew away to save Maroon. Maroon was one of the last Starwaves left, and though he was trapped under burning pieces of the ship he was on at the time. Barua tried her best to free him, but they had both suffered fatal wounds. Eventually, Barua succumbed to the peaceful darkness and died alongside him. This whole even Lase watched, and she hid it from herself. Sometimes she had nightmares about it, but after a while she forgot the event completely. Lase doesn't know the actual reason why she sits on that rock and gazes at the place where her mother and father had died, she just does. |
