61-92 Winter
Marketplace in Zeltiva

OOCDrop by, say hi. Especially if you have heard rumors of rare and unusual objects that Anselm might be interested in seeking out. Who knows what adventures might arise from such rumors? BTW, you can pick any day between 61 and 92 Winter for your post.

As was his custom, Anselm arrived at the marketplace early in the morning to set up his tent. The entire front side of the tent was tied back, creating a three-sided covered space. Inside sat Anselm behind a small table. A black cane with a silver handle leaned against the table beside him. A single chair was located in front of the table. A sign hung above the entrance:

ANSELM THE SEER

Anselm wore a long black cloak held closed at the neck by a silver brooch. A black hood covered his head and obscured his face somewhat in shadow. He did this not to hide the fact that he was Nuit, but to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to it. Besides, he thought it added a mysterious, almost spooky element to the overall atmosphere he was trying to create.
Perception is everything, he thought to himself as he waited for his first customer.

The Fortune Teller (Open Social Thread)

65th Winter 511 AV
Eskin slipped between the numerous people moving from one end of the market to the other and back, occasionally giving and receiving a shove or a push. He didn't really know what he was doing here, other than he didn't feel like going to the University today. He would probably be yelled at by some professor or other, but at the moment, he didn't particularly care.

Noticing a tent set up to one side of the market, Eskin moved against the current of people to get a look at the sign hanging above the shelter. Answers, huh? he thought, having read the sign I wouldn't mind a few of those, and I can probably spare 5 silver mizas, as long as I don't take too many classes next season...

He made his decision and ducked under the entrance to the tent, taking a seat at the table in front of 'Anselm the Seer'. "Hello." He said, trying to be as cordial as possible "I have a question for you, if you would answer it".

While waiting for a response, Eskin scrutinized the man's face and hands. Though his face was partially in shadow, he seemed deathly pale, and he didn't seem to be breathing. So unless the old man had suffered a heart attack and no one had bothered to move him, this man was likely another nuit. Perhaps he would be able to answer the question then.

The Fortune Teller (Open Social Thread)

The tall man's eyes gave it away. His gait was off as well. And he gave off a slight whiff of something rotting. But it was the eyes that gave it away. They were dead. Intense, yes. But dead nonetheless. This was a Nuit. Why is he here? Anselm asked himself. Why would a Nuit of all people (sort of) come to a fortune teller? Nuits weren't especially prone to superstition, so it seemed unlikely that he actually believed in fortune telling. But here he was. Anselm didn't particularly care to deal with a Nuit. There wasn't likely to be much in it for him. But he could at least get some silver out of the deal.

“You have a question for me,” Anselm said thoughtfully, almost to himself. “For me.” There was no point in reading the man's life lines. It wasn't even his body. So he centered himself and let his mind reach out to lightly touch the other man's aura. Fear? Anger? Frustration? He couldn't pin it down without extending himself further and he wasn't willing to take that risk. Still, a conflicted Nuit. As though there were any other kind, he thought to himself mirthlessly.

Anselm reached inside his cloak and drew out a small gray pouch. He opened it carefully and poured the eighteen tiny carved bones into his left hand. He held open his hand so the Nuit could see the bones. They were intricately carved and were etched with complex markings. “Very well. What is your question?”

The Fortune Teller (Open Social Thread)

Season of Winter, Day 61, 511AV

It was a new.

She had been working hard on her memorization of the city and that had not been there a week ago. Ndale was sure of it. Then again she could have entered the Marketplace the wrong way again, that always set her backwards but turning to check behind she was sure she was in the correct area. And still the sign glared out at her:

ANSELM THE SEER

You got questions? Anselm's got answers. 5 sm per question.

“Seer?” the strange word rolled off her tongue, she had never heard of it before. Seer? It sounded vaguely familiar but she could not place the translation properly. It was written in common, she was learning more words each day for the language but this one seemed most familiar. A name? No—not a name…

A little gasp left her, a seer! Of course, now that the Kontinese word fluttered through her mind the two connected. Perhaps it was a Konti giving fortunes? But the name wasn’t proper for any Konti, at least, not from what she remembered.

Moving forward purposely Ndale stepped into the tent and looked around curiously, it was bare compared to most Market Place shops, only a table, a chair and the strange looking man seated on one side. Today all she had with her was her coin purse, her arms bare from the cold and she found the inside of the little tent strangely warm, blocking the soft but freezing breeze outside.

Seating herself in the chair she opened her coin purse and began counting,
“Answer my question.” It was only after she said the words did she realize she had probably came off as rude but there was no point in dancing about why she was here. She had heard a fortune only once, back on Mura, she wanted to remember the feeling of having it told and coming true so she could write it in her journal.

All the same for politeness sake she tacked on a quick word at the end.

“Please.”

The Fortune Teller (Open Social Thread)

What a lovely young woman, Anselm thought. Oh to be alive again. A bit odd looking. An albino? Maybe. That left eye seems to have a life of its own. Nervous? Flighty? Needs some lessons in basic manners. All this flitted through his mind in a rapid cascade of flow-of-consciousness thoughts.

He reached out with his left hand and gently touched the back of her right hand with his index and middle fingers. He was wearing thin, black cotton gloves so as to spare his customers the disconcerting experience of being touched by deathly cold hands. She froze at his touch and looked up from her coin purse. She had startling red eyes.

“Kelvic,” he stated matter-of-factly as his senses picked up on her animal side, although he could not tell what kind of animal. Curiouser and curiouser, he thought, and then wondered why on earth that thought came to him. Now he was intrigued.

“Now, my dear. Would you prefer that I answer your question before or after you tell me what it is?”
