And Then Everything Changed... [Akilah]

Ronan softened thankfully when Akilah spoke up for him. The girl stared for a long while, seemingly refusing to accept he was her cousin. When she demanded he bend down, he breathed deeply but complied. The girl poked and prodded his face, but he didn't scowl. He smiled.

"He has Keegan's nose," the girl said, "he can come in." And with that she walked off.

He turned to Akilah in wonder. Was Keegan a brother, a father? And then she told him he was a Strider.

"I... I remind her of a horse?" Akilah laughed as he stared around the camp bewildered. In the end he cracked, joining in her laughter. By Semele... he felt better. A lot better.

Beginning to follow the young girl towards the tents, Ronan fought back the nervous flutterings in his heart. Windsong and proud, he thought inwardly.

"Let's go then," he said with a nod, "let's go meet them."

And Then Everything Changed... [Akilah]

Postby Akilah Windsong on February 13th, 2012, 5:42 am

Her father was directly inside, listening to Fajra as she chirped excitedly to him about Keegan's nose and how soft his fur was. And how he had almost shoved her aside as he eat.

And someone had his nose but not as good as Keegan's nose. More like Keegan's fake nose.

These sounds filtered out as she approached the patterned cloth, her eyes tracing patterns she had known her entire life. The fox, the flower, the dog, the strider. She could name them all, draw them with her eyes closed.

At Fajra's words, she stifled a chuckle before heading in.

As she pushed the flaps to her pavilion open, the small beads dangling from the roof catching light and glittering, she caught sight of her father. With dark brown hair, speckled in grey, she knew she took more after him than she did her mother.

Except for her eyes and nose. Those were all hers.

"I see," he replied to the young girl, his voice puzzled. Clearly he didn't know how take this rambling mess Fajra gave him, her news distorted as her words came out in rapid succession. His back was to Akilah, his attention solely on her cousin. He was open and vulnerable to an attack.

Why, he even had his apron on. That gave her at least ten extra points in the game. He almost never wore that apron outside of the kitchen and they weren't allowed to tag him in there anymore. She slide a foot forward, silently trying to cross the gap between the two.

"And what do you think you're doing?"

Ah, but there was her grandma, her head sticking out of the kitchen flaps. Heat slowly came out with her, the smell of raw meat being cut, and she gave a smile at the older woman.

At the older, smaller woman--she was only a little shorter than Akilah, but her sharp blue eyes made it clear she wasn't one to be trifled with. Her hands were rubbing themselves clean with a small cloth and Akilah gave a sheepish smile.

Getting caught by grandma: minus ten points. Her cousins would be thrilled to know she slid back again in their scoreboard.

"I'm home." Using Ronan to her advantage, she turned and pulled the older man into the open. "I have someone I would like you to meet."

"Another friend?" her grandma replied pertly, taking in the tall youth. "Or perhaps you finally found a mate?" Her eyes roved Ronan's face as she spoke.

Something in his features made her pause, some familiarity. Just as quickly she dismissed it, and greeted him. "Welcome. I hope Akilah has not troubled you much."

Ronan followed Akilah into the tent nervously. There was a man, and the little girl recounted her stories to him. And then, as Akilah stepped forward, an older lady poked her head into the room, grinning.

"Oh no! No trouble at all," he said hurriedly, "she... she's hurt a little."

He clammed up, not knowing what to say next. The tent was homely, smells of cooking and family filling his nostrils. It was a strange moment. The memories of his past became so tangible. Yet he felt unsure too. They were Windsong's, yes, but were they truly his family. He did not know them, they did not know him.

He looked to Akilah, hoping she'd break the silence.

And Then Everything Changed... [Akilah]

Postby Akilah Windsong on February 15th, 2012, 7:36 am

Her grandma gave her a knowing look at his words, tucking in a stray strand of silverly-white hair behind her ear. There was never wasted movement with her; she had the grace that came with experience and age. Even as she walked to the pair, a slight limp in her left leg, there was something powerful and eye catching about her.

Akilah paused, staring at her left leg. A hunting accident of her youth, an incident she talks about with a wry smile on her face and dismissal in her voice. What other stories did her grandma have that she never told? What of her father, her uncles, her aunts?

Nothing, she would have thought before, but Ronan had changed that. Now was not the time, but winter was coming. Soon enough the tales would flow.

"It seems the moment you step outside you return with some bruise or another," her grandma tutted, used to at least one of her grandchildren returning home bruised and bloody. There was strange pride in her voice, one that Akilah recognized over time, at the signs of strength in her family: strength of character, strength of arms.

Her knee stung slightly, a remainder that she would have to get her leg cleaned and looked at later. The ankle especially--it throbbed and she could feel a headache forming from the lines of pain.

Her grandma stopped in front of them, tilting her head down to survey the damage. "You have to get out of those pants."

"Before that," she interjected, gesturing to her cousin. There was no easy way to say this, the truth was all there was. "You have to meet him. Grandma, this is Ronan Windsong. He's a cousin."

That stopped her grandma, her head instantly shooting up to look at the youth. Her father turned from where he stood, shushing Fajra when she spoke up again. Keen eyes raked the stranger's continence and within moments her father was in front of them as well.

For a few minutes, there was silence, even Fajra not sure of what to say or do in the tense atmosphere. The two adults stared at Ronan, confusion marring their features.

This was no boy they knew. This was no child they had watched grow up in the pavilion. Another pavilion--but no, he was a Windsong and there were no others. Not since--

The older woman caught on first, glimmers of recognition dawning on her face as she stared at him. The last Ronan Windsong had been--but he had died, with the rest of them.

They had never found his body. Not even scraps of clothing or any signs to show where he had died. He was no more than a child, but--

Her breath hitched as she stared at him, taking in his nose, his eyes, his ears. They looked familiar, similar, like the ones...

She stopped her thoughts there. There was still the chance this could be an imposter, an accident, a mistake. Catching herself, she asked, her voice wavering slightly. "Could you really....?"

Akilah's father knew of the incident, knew of the members involved, but never knew them personally. It still shocked him to the core to see a survivor, to see the dead risen again.

He might have never known his dead kin but he had seen the aftermath in his own pavilion. Incidents leave marks, like ink, staining everything it touches. He had seen the depression that hit his clansmen, watched as they tied the Cairns to the web.

Even without the question, he could see their emotions paralleled in the man's face, the same mess playing across his features.

Someone had returned home after a very long time.

There was a moment of silence, and intense study. And then recognition. The old lady's expression turned into a smile, as if she'd just discovered a gem among a pile of rocks.

And Akilah's father almost began to laugh.

"I'm alive," he said, with a nod of his head, "after everything, I'm alive."

He broke into a smile of his own, turning to look at Akilah.

"Thank you," he mouthed, "for everything."

The whole situation was bizarre, and like nothing he had ever experienced. All the attention on him was uncomfortable, but not a bad uncomfortable. It was positive attention, charm and happiness. He was too used to the cold stone and wind of life, wearing away at his spirit.

But nothing here was set to erode him, only to build him. To build him back up.

"Oh..."

Akilah watched her grandma as her expression changed. Never, not even when her grandfather had died, had she thought of the woman as anything but strong. Now there was a fragility to her, something soft and breakable. It scared her a little, shocked her a lot.

"So you lived." It was a whisper at best, her eyes closed and her expression serene. She opened her eyes and gave him a smile, her hand reaching out to touch his face. "You were so young back then..." Her wrinkled hand pressed against his cheek, reached further to touch his ears, his nose, his eyes. She had to stand on her toes to manage and even then Ronan had to bend his neck a little. "Just like him..." she murmured, before dropping her hand. "Come in."

She turned around and Akilah wanted to touch her grandmother at that moment.

Then it passed and she stood strong once more, her voice firm and steady. "Follow me, we will talk somewhere more appropriate."

Akilah looked back at Ronan, caught his mouthed words, and shook her head. It was not like she did anything, just got hurt and got found. And that was hardly something to thank her for. Especially when now, here, where everything seemed magnified. Expanded. She felt a little small now, a little lost, in this muddle of history and emotions.

No, her actions were nothing when she compared it to the weight of this moment.

Her father gave Ronan a bemused look, squeezing his shoulder. "Welcome back," he said, before turning to return to the kitchen. "I'll get you something to eat."

Akilah stood there awkwardly, before motioning to the door. "From the sounds there, I think you have a lot more people to meet. Don't get scared now." A weak joke, at best. Giving a sheepish smile, she started to move to the entrance before she said anything else.

The family accepted him quickly, the idea sinking in like rain to the earth. Drykas were always grounded. He had been told that from a young age.

"Food. Oh, thank you!" he quickly realised it would be best not to deny the offer. He was hungry, and that was all there was too it.

Akilah joked of more family, and he smiled as best he could. It was hard enough just taking in these people. It was hard enough just taking in Akilah. He would give all of this a chance, but he couldn't help feeling disconnected.

When he looked at the faces, trickles of recollection seeped into his mind. The funeral... had he seen these people before? And then he had fled, living on the fringes of this place, like some kind of hermit in the grasses. It was not an exceptional case amongst the male Drykas.

"You're too kind. All of you."
