Writing up anything not previously claimed (which only I have done, mind you) is perfectly fine. Whether it'll get accepted or not...now, that's another story.

Myri's Teeth

Image
(Picture pending some Photoshop work.)

Just off of the northeast coast of Black Rock is a most unusual formation. Several large stone spires jut out from the waters. No one knows what formed these, but it is often assumed that they appeared during the Valterrian. These rocky towers reach high into the sky, and are, on a clear day, visible from Black Rock. They cover roughly two to three square miles of water. They also extend deep down into the waters, ending in a rocky base.

There are two very unique features to this area. The first are the very unusual currents that flow between the spires. The currents are always shifting, changing, and this makes them incredibly dangerous. It takes a highly skilled sailor, usually in a small, Svefra craft to just survive going through. Just as it is deadly above, it is equally dangerous below. Charoda on seahorseback have been known to become severely injured or die. Thanks to all the deaths and injuries, the name Myri's Teeth came about in both cultures.

Now, it isn't difficult to avoid Myri's Teeth, a mere detour will keep them out of harm's way. The Charodae have reasons for wanting to venture in. They attempt to navigate the dangerous undertows and currents for a chance at obtaining a few handfuls of the extremely rare Gilded Kelp. This kelp is one of the highest forms of delicacies among the Charodae. It never needs to be cooked, it is incredibly nutritious, and will last an incredibly long time without spoiling. No Charoda has ever managed to transplant the Gilded Kelp back in Charbosi, and Myri's teeth is the only place it exists.

The Svefra, one the other hand, have a different treasure in mind. Roosted at the top of the spires are a very rare type of sea bird called the Tiktik Caw. The bird in and of itself isn't of much importance. They are very difficult to tame, are not particularly tasty or nutritious, and their feathers don't even make for good pillows. Their eggs are highly prized, but not for eating. Eating one usually results in death. The eggs are obsidian black, just like the chicks, and are very hard to steal from the nests. The shell and albumen of the egg contains a strong paralytic that only takes effect if ingested by anything other than the Tiktik. This paralytic can paralyze even the heaviest of predators, which in the Suvan, equates to death.

The shell can also be made into a black dye when ground up and mixed with milk. The milk appears to neutralize the paralytic and make it nontoxic. The milk can come from just about any creature, though some make better color mixes than others. The Svefra will often try to climb the spires at a chance to get a few of these eggs, for they are a strong bartering item with foreigners, especially the Eypharians.

Torvin Island
Image
Just off the northern tip of Glasswater Bay, the bay that encompasses Alvadas' port, is a coniferous island. The island is a large swath of land that didn't fall beneath the waves during the Valterrian. The island is not visible from Alvadas, but many sailors use it as the northern marker of the bay. But they never land here, not even during the harshest of storms.

The island was named after Lucawte Torvin. He was a criminal that had successfully evaded the law of Alvadas and fled by ship to the north. Not being a sailor, he quickly found himself stranded on an island not far from where he'd fled. The island was a few square miles altogether, had no beaches, just rocky shores. Torvin was no woodworker, and wouldn't try to fix his boat until the following morning. He cursed the night, waiting for dawn to come. When Syna finally warmed the night, Torvin was sitting on the rocks, agitated. He began to feel eyes watching him, from all sides. He had experience being watched, he was a paranoid thief after all. He looked all around him. He was far from the treeline, sitting on craggy rocks. He saw nothing, but could still feel the eyes. He turned back and waited, thinking he was about to be pounced upon. But his reflexes were sharp, he could handle most adversaries.

Then he felt the bite into his ankle. He looked down and saw a large yellow and black spider scurrying away from his kicking foot, down the side of the rocks. The spider was the size of a small dog, and was now leaping into the water, and disappeared from sight. In a panic, Torvin ran back to his mangled boat. He suddenly found himself in a lavish bath, surrounded by beautiful women waiting on his every need. It was his dream. He began to relax, chuckling, not realizing this was a hallucination. One of the beautiful women approached him, kissing his neck. Then he felt a sharp pain in his stomach. He looked down and the woman had stabbed him in the stomach with a dagger.

Torvin woke up the next day near his boat. His stomach was sore, and he looked down. He saw a puncture wound in his stomach, but it appeared to be sealed by a thick, white paste. He touched it, and found it to be sticky, but sturdy. He had to get back to a city, he had friends that could fix him up. After the boat was repaired, Torvin made for the nearest coast. From there, he walked several days until he returned to Alvadas. He hadn't felt hunger for the last several days, something he found quite odd. Once back in the town he'd fled, he found a friend to heal him up. They went back to his hideout, and the man began inspecting the wounds. While doing so, the man told him of the island he'd stumbled upon. Immediately after the story was finished, the Silencers showed up and skewered Torvin upon their blades. A proper criminal's death. As the last blade was pulled from his stomach, several small spiders began scurrying out from the gore, only to die several moments later. From that day forth, the island had been deemed dangerous, and was dubbed Torvin Island.

Torvin island is a fairly standard island. There is next to no indigenous wildlife aside from birds. There are no sandy beaches, just rocky shores. It is covered by coniferous pines and small shrubs. There is not much edible vegetation here, and nothing of much interest aside from a cave like opening in the center of the island. This is the home for the Lucid Lurkers.

Image

The Lucid Lurkers only come out during the day time, and sleep in the cave during the night. This is due to the low tolerance for cold air. The cool air seeps into their lungs, and forces them into a form of coma, from which they don't wake up from. The cave rests over a hot spot beneath the island, and is usually half filled with water.

The Lucid Lurkers are amphibious, and survive by eating on fish. They do not breath underwater, but rather seal off their lungs, and swim. They are much faster underwater than on land, where stealth is key. Since they aren't breathing in the water, they do not die in mildly cooler temperatures. The Lurkers reproduce by biting a creature, or unlucky sentient being, and injecting a hallucinogenic toxin. This toxin is not lethal, but will cause the person to see themselves in the place they most desire to be. This causes the body to relax, and be ready to receive the Lurker's eggs. A quick stab to the stomach by it's retractable stinger ensures reception. The spider pumps the already fertilized eggs into the stomach, followed by a nutritious white paste that serves to both feed the host for a few days and seal up the puncture wound. The eggs must be in a warm, acidic environment in order to hatch. The hatching process takes an average 3-5 days, at the end of which, the hatchlings will burst forth from the sealed wound and begin their lives. The host must be alive through the entire duration of the hatching process, otherwise the spiderlings will die prematurely. This birthing process is almost guaranteed to kill the host, unless medical help is found immediately.

The Lucid Lurker cannot be tamed, and is often considered a great threat due to their ability to reproduce. It is extremely rare to find them anywhere other than Torvin Island. In recent years, many have tried to harvest the hallucinogenic toxin as a new drug to sell. Many have died trying to retrieve this toxin.

Suvan Sea Development - Ideas and Requests

Postby Liandra on February 28th, 2012, 5:08 pm

Name: Tiktik Caw
Frequency: Rare
Threat level: Low
Major features: Pure white feathers, pure black chicks, long, flowing tailfeathers
Abilities: Egg laying, Resistant to taming, Adept at hunting fish
Most common in: Myri's Teeth
Physical characteristics: The Tiktik Caw has rough, pure white plumage. It has long, flowing tail feathers, which are used in mating rituals. It also has pure white feet and beak. This is not a result of Albinism, but the true cause is unknown. Many speculate that it has to do with the proximity to Black Rock, but this has not been verified. Both genders are identical in all features.

The chicks are born from ebony colored eggs. Their baby fluff is a surprising black, as are its feet. The only contrast is its grey beak. As it grows, the black feathers will fall out and be replaced by the pure white feathers of adulthood. The feet and beaks take a bit longer to transition to the white, but by two years, they should be fully white.

Social Structure: Tiktik Caws live in one massive flock, nesting upon the tops of the spires of Myri's teeth. They mate indiscriminately with one another, never pairing for life. The males compete somewhat for the females' attention, but it's more of a formality than anything. In all honesty, mating goes by a first come, first serve basis.

Miscellaneous: The ebony eggs are the prize for hunters, artists, and poisonmakers alike. The shells from the egg, when consumed, act as a powerful paralytic. The effect takes place within a minute or two, depending on the size of the consumer. The shells can also be ground up and mixed with milk to form a rare black dye. Any milk will do, and the effects neutralize the paralytic as well. Only competent dyemakers should attempt this, as undermixing will lead to a slower paralytic that seeps into the skin.

Thank you. I'll add the Tiktik Caw and Myri's Teeth shortly. Now I just need you to do the same thing for the Lucid Lurkers before I can accept Torvin Island.

Suvan Sea Development - Ideas and Requests

Name: Lucid Lurker
Frequency: Rare
Threat level: High
Major features: Large, Bright Yellow Markings, Retractable Stinger
Abilities: Hallucinogenic Toxin, Amphibious, Parasitic Nester, Stealthy
Most common in: Torvin Island
Physical characteristics: The Lucid Lurker adult has an average leg span of two feet, and a body length of about five inches. It has very distinct black and yellow coloring. The males are only slightly larger than the females, and carry no other physical distinction from them. The Lurker has fairly large jaws, but will never be used for anything aside from catching fish. The females have a long, retractable stinger that is roughly half the length of their body.

The hatchlings carry none of the yellow markings until they mature. When they burst forth from the host, they have a leg span of 6 inches and a body length of a half inch. Their stinger isn't developed enough for use until their are mature enough to reproduce.

Social Structure: The Lucid Lurker lives in a communal nest. All of the Lurkers live together, with no form of hierarchy. Males and females will often mate for life, so long as the male is still deemed worthy of producing the female's heirs. Competition for mates is stiff, but rarely, if ever, will result in the death of either competitor. The males will do the majority of the fishing, using sturdy nets underwater to wrangle them in and drag them back to the nest. The females will typically stay in the nest until it is time to reproduce. They can reproduce once a month. When it is their time, they will leave the nest and begin looking for a host creature. This can be just about any creature large enough for the stinger to pierce the stomach, and no other vital organs. This can range from large fish, to large sea birds, to the occasional human traveler.

Miscellaneous: The hallucinogen injected by the female will cause the prey to feel as if it is in a safe, ideal place. For sentient species, this is typically the person's dream place and scenario. This allows the creature to relax during the injection of the eggs, and allows the creature to remain alive. The wound is sealed by a white paste, that is highly nutritious. This paste will keep the host's body alive for the 3-5 days it takes for the eggs to hatch.
