Because of the fluid atmosphere of a Svefra Pod (not to be punny or anything), you have to consider the Pod as one entity to figure out how the living expenses work. The original owner of the manufactured tool still had to pay for it, and even though Joe Blowhole didn't pay anything for it, perhaps the former owner will take it back and maybe even a couple of Joe's own goods in response. It is very circular. And, thus, because of this sentiment the entire Pod shares all their goods and therefore share the cost as well.

If you consider it this way, then the cost of living would go up as the pod goes up, too.

The people on Anchorage Flotilla are more like the land-dwellers, if anything, since it's not a purely Svefran environment there. Lots of outsiders and all that.

[Suvan Sea OOC Thread] The Fierce Currents

So, then, should the Svefra have their own system to figuring out living expenses?

My little pod would have a set seasonal cost, divided by the number of members or ships, really, since that is what would require the most non-domestic supplies, then every member would have to come up with that amount?

Maybe like a category system, Pods with five boats will spend X amount a season, while pods with fifteen ships will have Y amount to pay per season. Lone Svefra would have a high living expense, maybe, to support players adhering to the community mentality.

Any Svefra that spends a season travelling around with the Flotilla, or is born into a family that belongs to one of the old 'permanent' boats, would make more money and have a higher living expense?

I hope I'm not continuing a discussion no one is interested in nor cares about, haha.

No special system is needed, I don't think. If you live in one of the bigger Pods, the conditions are better, and thus you simply choose a higher cost of living as outlined in the living expenses wiki page. It doesn't need to be that specific.

The Flotilla no longer support the Svefra mentality. It is a market system where money is used, just like on dry land. So no, the same conditions would not apply.

Why wouldn't the Flotilla favor the Svefran mentality? Doesn't that imply that they've been completely assimilated into another worldview that rejects their own culture?

The flotilla does not reject "their own culture", just the stealing part of it. Which, you have to admit, is understandable. The Flotilla has become almost completely foreign, in any case. Only the position of Sesatvi has been left untouched. And Ceona supports the market system in public, if not exactly in private, because it is good for business.

Please, do not press the point further. The Flotilla is not going to condone stealing, even if its root culture does.

Hopefully this has answered everything.

[Suvan Sea OOC Thread] The Fierce Currents

I believe this old Nuit started this lengthy discussion of income and expenses. I apologize if I created some kind of flame war. That was certainly not my intent. On the other hand, a good deal of helpful information DOES appear to have emerged. So perhaps it has been a good thing in the end.

Many thanks to the Founders, DS's and other story tellers who work tirelessly to create and maintain a large, balanced world that is fair to everyone and provides a great sandbox that the rest of us get play in.

I see nothing of the type having been created. You were simply asking a question and I can only hope what has been said here has given you a satisfactory answer.

Anyhow...

Suvanites! I hope all of you have had a chance to read about the storm that will be occurring at the start of Spring, which starts tomorrow. If not, please follow the link posted above. You'll want to know, I assure you.

Please note that I will not be posting a thread for the actual day of the storm. That would be too chaotic and all over the place. However, I highly encourage that you start a thread for that day, perhaps as a solo outlining what happened to you. Or you could post in this thread. Or, even better, do both!

However, there will be several quests that will take place in the aftermath. Yes, that was indeed plural.

The first involves Svefra only. The storm will hit the Svefra Nation pretty hard. In light of all the losses they suffered, avikki birds will be sent out by the powerful Whitewave pod to all other pods, urging them for a meeting. You will be called to Caiyha's Fist Isle, an island sacred among the Svefran people, where the whalekin will gather, nurse their wounds, and connect with their other survivors...along with a surprise or two.

It is my hope that every active Svefra PC attends this event, but, barring that, I'd like to have as many people as possible join. It'll be a fun event, filled with socialization, adventure, and even some danger. If you are a Svefra, I'd highly appreciate if you would post either in the Suvan Sea OoC Thread or the racial thread (this will be posted in both). The thread will start in about a week or so, though that is due to change.

The second quest I had in mind was one open to all. This one is more involved and won't take place until much later after the Svefra-only one, either late March or early April, though a Sign Up will be posted forthwith. I'm going to be more secretive with this plot, so any and all details will be put in the Sign Up.

So, that's what is on the menu, so far. I'm hoping that Spring will be the greatest season of the Suvan Sea yet.

Fair tides, everyone.

Ahoy!

Just a heads up that my posting will be slow and sporadic for the next week or so!

Well, that depends. If you know a living Svefra and they pass on the news to you, I'm sure you would be allowed in.

So...yes.
