Seven, being a winner from Feb, chose March's Featured Thread. Here's his review.

Seven Xu wrote:My pick for featured thread is Untitled, a solo by Victor Lark.

Untitled is a simple window into the mind of a beautifully complex character. Victor’s writer has taken a comparatively bland human (often unattractive to most young fantasy board writers) and twisted him brilliantly; sometimes it’s easy to forget he’s a work of fiction. When I was asked to make a selection for March’s featured thread, I knew whose writing I wanted thrown under the spotlight, it was just a matter of choosing one work out of a stack of favourites. I chose Untitled, because it’s a simple and short read; it offers insight on the mind of this particular character, and his relationships—with not only his mother, but every past and future relationship in his life. Untitled eases the reader into Victor’s oft-mistaken state of mind, and leaves them wanting more.

Wow, I just graded that thread yesterday. I couldn't have picked a better winner myself. It's the complexity in simplicity that makes this such an awesome thread. Congratulations, Victor, you rock!

I remember you forcing me to read this one when you first posted it, and we agreed writing dialog-only was one of the most indulgent and enjoyable forms of writing to do. When I do it, I sort of go off on tangents and it just gets weird. Bravo for not doing that!

Grats, guy. :)

This thread is ridiculous. In a good way.

It is an obscenely perfect example of why, when reading things like this and your other posts, I end up wanting to push myself to be a better writer.

Untitled is March's Featured Thread!

Postby Caelum on March 2nd, 2012, 1:48 am

I was going to quote Aaron Sorkin, the greatest living writer of silver screen dialogue, but then I remembered this:

Whatever happened to me in my life, happened to me as a writer of plays. I'd fall in love, or fall in lust. And at the height of my passion, I would think, "So this is how it feels," and I would tie it up in pretty words. I watched my life as if it were happening to someone else. My son died. And I was hurt, but I watched my hurt, and even relished it, a little, for now I could write a real death, a true loss. My heart was broken by my dark lady, and I wept, in my room, alone; but while I wept, somewhere inside I smiled. For I knew I could take my broken heart and place it on the stage of The Globe, and make the pit cry tears of their own.

-- Neil Gaiman, writing for his characterization of William Shakespeare.

Exquisite, darling.
