Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

53rd of Winter 511AV

He had been thinking for a long time about what he was going to do about Lynnea. Part of him knew it was time to make a decision. He remembered in his head and heart what Lynnea had promised him she would do for him.

When we get out of here, I swear to take you there. To take you to Mura. You'll love it there. That I swear to you. He could still remember the ferocity in that promise.

Even though the winter nipped at him in that moment behind those iron bars, he had hope. Her words had brought him hope that there was something else out there for him. That there was a place that he could be free and heal. And that place was Mura. Little did he know in that moment how true her words were. He had no idea that he would set foot in Mura a years later to discover she was more than right. Mura was where he needed to be; where he would heal…where he would find everything including himself. He had churned over everything Mura meant to him in his head.

It was where he healed and came to terms with his past. He learned inner peace and tranquility. Long hours fishing in wonderful serenity for his many dinners that he ate. On that fine sand beach was where he cooked the meals that brought him strength. Ildin pushed every limit he knew, that built up his body and his mind. His body had changed drastically because he got fresh wonderful bounty from the sea joined with Ildins relentless training rituals. His mind and emotions were stretched by Lym’s training. She had him care for the young and the old just the same. He had helped ease a small girls man o war wounds and an old woman’s joint pain as she aged into her late hundreds.

In a very large way Mura was responsible wholly for who he was now. If he hadn’t landed foot in Mura he likely would be a very different person now. He would be a more violent person, a much more vengeful person unable to heal others because he would be obsessed with his own vengeance. His hands would be tainted crimson forever; never able to get the blood off of them. Never able to remove the hate and spite from his eyes.

But that wasn’t who he was, no. His hands were gentle and calming…healing above all. His eyes alight with understanding and compassion but above all purpose. His purpose was to heal and to learn the art he had grown to love. He had learned how to ease pain even mental distress. He owed all this to Mura. And in a way he owed this to Lynnea as well.

He woke in the morning knowing what he was to do. Not one more thought in his head about what he was to do about this. A man of action he would set things to motion. Kavala, she was the first part of this plan. The issue with all this was he didn’t know where to find her this early in the morning. The sun was hardly even hinting at coming up yet. So he would wait for her. He knew she would likely bring her child down to the fire first thing, especially since this winter was bitterly cold.

From outside he brought a few logs and placed them on the warm embers. He then placed thinner sticks and kindling down to start a flame that would set alight the rest of the logs. Gently and efficiently he laid out the logs and set them alight. This fireplace was impressive and cast out a good amount of heat into the rest of the room. He put his long white cloak on a wooden peg and sat in a chair waiting for her to arrive. She would be here, he knew it.

His posture said everything. Called to action, he had conviction of action. Driven by his own internal drive he was going to do this. Calling up whatever bravery he had he breathed evenly and looked into the flames flickering over the wood. It calmed him to see something so methodical. There was something primal about it that just made him lose everything else around him. He wasn’t obsessed with fire, no, but something about it helped him focus internally on the action at hand. For a moment he lost the world and was sitting there, just him…nothing else…no one else.

Kavala indeed had Tasival but they weren't in her suite. They'd been down swimming in the bitter cold which didn't bother them like it did humans. Instead of runs on the beach in the snow, Kavala took to taking her son underwater and letting him frolic where his metabolism thrived with such things rather than exposing him to the cool weather of the snow. The hit the cavern from the beach, finding the road down the cliff of little use to them now. Then they'd swam for an hour and came in to warm up by the fire.

Serrif was there and Kavala smiled a welcome to him, her hair still wet, as she settled Tasival and Shayru into a spot close to the fire with a handful of toys in easy reach. It was time to make them both some porridge, or at least the boys some and herself some seaweed stew.

"How are you this morning, Serrif? Doing okay?" She asked, still a little puzzled at the human man's doings. That he was a damaged soul was evident enough, though he seemed to conceal his form and hide his feelings, especially since that first night. Kavala wondered if they'd been to hard on him chastising him for being out in a snowstorm like he'd been. But she left him be, not feeling like he was any harm to anyone and trying to give him enough space to open up and finally make an attempt to get to know the folks at Sanctuary.

"Would you like some porridge? I'm making some for the boys."
She said, already hanging the grains and water over the kitchen fire. Kavala would have to make some bread for the lunch in a few minutes and thought to herself it would be nicer than nice to have a cook hired one of these days.

A smile crossed his face as he watched the little boy play near the fire. Every now and then he would turn and look to Serrif though with quizzical eyes. Almost like he was plotting something. An interesting idea but there was no real proof of this so he shrugged it off. She offered to cook him something along with her child and he smiled.

“You need to get yourself a cook Kavala, and maybe a full time sitter for the little one as well.” He said with a smile as he sat back and made himself comfortable near the fire.

“You can’t do everything and keep your sanity.” Likely something she was already aware of. Since getting he had seen Kavala in many roles. Mother, cook, horse breeder, businesswoman she seemed to do it all around here and well he knew that there were few people that could keep this up and not burn out completely.

Every one of those facets were important though. Which was how a person got stuck into doing them all when there were no qualified individuals to fill the roles. You just started picking up role after role until you were doing everything. He personally would offer to cook but he didn’t want to ruin the boys breakfast. Boys…as far as he could see there was only one here by the fire…was she pregnant? With as often as she was being ‘serviced’ by that Akalak she was bound to he didn’t doubt it. Especially since it only took once…

“If you want I can lend you a hand in the kitchen; another set of hands could be useful.” He offered his help to her not just to be polite but because he wanted to help relieve some of the day to day effort she had to pour into everything. But he was still questioning how to bring the topic of Lynnea up to Kavala.

He knew what he wanted to do. But it was just a matter of if Kavala would help him do it. His mind told him that she would help him send her home. “Have you ever felt called to do something? Like there was something you had to do even if there wasn’t anyone around to tell you to do it. You aren’t sure where the thought came from but you feel…feel that it is time to make a decision between what is right and what is easy?”

He wasn’t sure if he was speaking sense or not. Almost nervously he ran a hand through his short black hair. He wasn’t sure how Kavala would take his words but they were indeed what was on his mind and heart right now. He wanted to help Lynnea get home. Even if it indentured him to Kavala for the price of the gear. He wanted to do it, he felt compelled to do it. He knew how horribly the woman likely wanted to be home. He knew because he had seen Mura himself. And he couldn’t imagine the pain of being separated from it.

Kavala looked up at Serrif just then after his comment about her needing a cook, and sighed softly. Her blue eyes went so pale they gave her a blind look for a moment and she controlled some emotion that fluttered across her mind. Serrif was lecturing her in her own home, gently of course, but still doing it. She couldn't help but think of another situation where someone had just stood up and started helping her rather than sat back and pointed out all that was lacking in her life. Yes, she needed things... she needed a lot of things. But there was only so many things she could provide for herself.

And she did the best she could.

But instead of comment, making a situation she disliked even worse, she only offered him a smile and nodded. It was so easy for others to sit back and offer advice but the reality was far different than the perception. She'd trust very few people with her sons. She'd trust even fewer with the nutrition of the people here. If one came along, so be it, but so far none had presented themselves. Kavala took that as a sign that the Gods didn't think they needed help. "I'll give it some thought." She said, offering a compromise between her real reaction and the one she showed him.

She wouldn't accept his offer of help in the kitchen, so she said nothing. If he observed the staff and denizens long enough, he'd understand that help was never asked for or offered. It just materialized when needed. If Serrif wanted to help, he could, but by simple action, not permission.

Kavala still hadn't figured Serrif out. She didn't know what was motivating him or why he was about. He was a Mura healer, non-Konti, that had come to them in a blinding snowstorm. He was here to gather their knowledge for the Opal Temple. She didn't even know what that meant... what knowledge? How to heal animals? The mechanisms were the same as with people. Only animals, in Kavala's thoughts, were easier patients with less complex needs and more diverse chances of thriving. And though not knowing him really well, she did recognize that he wanted something, perhaps just to talk. Kavala settled in, a sharp eye on Tasi and Shayru, all the while listening to Serrif.

When he spoke of a call, she nodded. Yes, she'd felt The Call. It was one she was answering even now, being here, gathering the Cytali and building Sanctuary's fortress. "Yes, I understand... I've felt such things." She said simply, rising to give the porridge another stir. Serrif hadn't answered her question so she assumed he didn't want any of the food.

"Sure, what's on your mind Serrif. Do you need help with something?" She asked, curious.

Little things sometimes told you the most about someone. Little things. Like how Serrif always wore a bodysuit to cover his scars because in a way he hated to see them. He hated to be reminded that somehow he was still someone else’s property. That there were people who would enslave him if they ever found him again; or maybe they would just outright kill him. He knew for sure here in Riverfall he had no rites, and here in the Sanctuary he was but a visitor. Little things, the bags under his eyes would hint he hadn’t slept well as well as the lax manor that his body moved. Almost as if he hadn’t slept well since getting here.

Little things, like how Kavala’s eyes glazed reminding him of Merida at the Opal Temple. Something he said pricked her, brought something forward. She was controlling it yes but he could only imagine that she wanted to give him a good tongue lashing right now. He almost formed the words himself in his own mind that would pour from her mouth, which humbled him back into his chair as he wanted to retract what he said…but had no way to. That was something he wouldn’t press any further. Instead he just let his pupils track to the lower right hand edges of his eyes as he thought carefully on how he was going to word what he said next.

She rose to stir the porridge and he just continued to sit there…appearing almost lost as he systematically failed to navigate the catacombs of his mind to piece together what he wanted to say to her. How he could put all this into words effectively. How could he convey the emotion when he hardly knew her…when she hardly knew him? He couldn’t…he wouldn’t be able to. So his mind was trying to find alternate routes. But it was coming up empty handed as was shown clearly on his face. Befuddled he shook himself back and figured he best try and indulge Kavala. TRY but he didn’t know how anyone could understand…really understand what was going through his mind. Why Lynnea was on his mind constantly. HOW her promise meant so much to him in the few moments she spoke it and why it meant so much to him now.

The next time Kavala rose to stir the porridge she would find that Serrif rose first and did it for her; sometimes he didn’t need to be asked to do something. After he knew what needed to be done. The stirring of the mix helped his thought process. “This is…? my past…even though I don’t know you I will tell you. His mind was completing his sentence but his mouth could not. He was stumbling over his own mind finding words.

Defeated, he felt defeated as he stood there stirring the porridge gently from the bottom and sides making sure it didn’t burn. “I don’t have the means to do something I feel called to do.” He felt guilty because he didn’t have the means to do what he wanted. Even if he felt called to do something that didn’t mean he had the means to.

Shaking his head some he spoke again. “You don’t know this man. So it would be difficult to relay to you what this means to me.” He said comparing himself to Tizack. He knew she knew the other man. He knew that from the first conversation they had together.

But he was a different man; but the same man as well. The two shared many traits, but they also had some differences as well. That would only really show themselves in time. None of the staff knew him. Perhaps he kept it this way on purpose; because there wasn’t anyone that wanted to talk with him. But Kavala, right now, wanted to know…did he need help with something?

He did, more than he would admit openly to her. But he wouldn’t, he couldn’t bring himself to ask her to trust him when she hardly knew him at all. In his mind he was stuck. “But I would like you to know me. But this comes with time.” So let’s spend time together, I want to know you too but he couldn’t say that. So he wouldn’t. Just like her he came up with a compromise.

“I’d like to learn how to bake.” He admitted honestly as he finished mixing the porridge and looked to Kavala. He thought it was done but that didn’t mean much. His way of saying he wanted to help, but just needed to learn now to.

Kavala was bad at reading people. She honestly was. She could look at a horse from half a mile away or even something as simple as a milk cow and pretty much judge fairly accurately how emotionally stable the animal was and how happy it was. Body language and her Konti gift fed her information constantly. But it left her with a distinct disadvantage when it came to dealing with people. Raiha and Rath she could understand. They were somehow closer to the Gods and always seemed to understand and fill in the gaps when they were in existence. But humans, particularly males, confounded her. She could no more read Serrif's intent than she could understand what a rock was feeling.

And he seemed to awkward, as if he was afraid of her or didn't know how to treat her. She wondered how much he remembered before, of Crescent and of Tizack's life. He had arranged her personality like a florist arranged flowers and made her into what he needed. She had protected him every day of her life forgetting what had come before her of the Ruv'na and of her training as an assassin. He'd superimposed memories of himself doing that training of her. He'd made himself her focus and artificially revolved her life around his. Tizack had then placed her in his bed, filling her head with artificial feelings, and spent the rest of his life satiating his lust on her body with her every day believing those feelings had been her own.

Sure Tizack had done real and true good in the world. But he wasn't wholly a good person. He was capable of anything. Was Serrif the same way?

Almost all the men in her life used her in one way or another and she was wary of them to the extreme. But with Serrif it was more than that. Kavala listened when he asked to learn to bake and nodded.

"I'm not good with everything, but I do know some things. I can show you what I know." She said softly, looking thoughtful. It was awkward, terribly awkward, and she wasn't quite certain why. But she didn't leave it at that. She spoke further, with a little certainty.

"You know... I remember all of that past. And even to this day I do. In a lot of ways Tizack saved me, but he never trusted me. Everything I became under his watch was forced upon me. He never went gently and he never gave anything a chance to develop on its own. Even though he admired Crescent, Serrif, he never ever once trusted her. I think he even put her in his bed because with her there he could watch her and control her with artificial emotions." She said, watching his reaction.

"It was rape. I understand why he did it, being outside the situation and having no contact with the then even now. But he gave her no trust. He took no chances. Everything she thought or felt he controlled absolutely. And I don't think he ever told her. Why Serrif? Why was their life such a lie?" Kavala asked." Kavlaa said, studying him intently.

He was apprehensive toward Kavala. Mostly because he didn’t know what she was to him yet, she was a ghost of his past that he had wronged. And now she was in a Konti body and he was in a way at her mercy. He didn’t expect her to do anything to harm him. But he wanted to handle situations with her delicately, because he knew she was watching him very carefully now. Not only because he was now, but because he was Tizack as well. And Tizack was a dangerous man; one who seemed to fill his desires and wishes regardless of what it cost others.

Tizack was capable and willing to commit atrocities and claim them under the guise of being mostly ‘good’. Tizack’s duty seemed to be first to his own then to others. He would look out for those around him first. What Tizack was doing was in a way Noble but while shooting so high he made one mistake with Crescent, just one and let his emotions slip into the mix. And that led to the unexpected. Misinterpretation of what he wanted but at the same time he was getting exactly what he wanted as well. Tizack was a hurting man ever since his wife and child died. And he let that slip and indulged himself in Crescent. Allowing himself to have what he had missed for so long, a wife. And yes, he could be blamed for what he did to Crescent. He did it…but did Serrif?

The more important question after Kavala’s questions was would Serrif do the same thing? How could he put himself into Tizack’s shoes and say he would or wouldn’t do what his past self did? He hardly knew the man in his entirety. Hell Kavala likely knew Tizack better than he did! So Serrif had to assess this from a standby point of view. He had to believe fully that he knew what his past self was up to. He agreed with Kavala, it was rape. And rape even for the right reasons was still rape; it didn’t diminish the crime. He nodded her head comprehending and at the same time feeling shame for what he had done to Crescent in the past. He felt responsible even if he wasn’t. That pang of rape…that hit a deep cord with him. She would see that…she could almost feel it.

His eyes almost grew distant and for a moment a scowl flashed across his face; just long enough to make her really question what she had seen. But it was quickly replaced by disgust…He had committed rape as well in the slave camp. He remembered that; HE had. Not Tizack…no HIM. But was it him, or was it Seven who had done it? He remembered it. Yes he had been coerced to; but it was still rape. And for the enjoyment of others no less. The sounds…the smells of sweat came back to him…flooded his mind as he tried to fight it back. But it didn’t matter it stuck, that feeling of deep disgust and regret. That shame shifted to outrage as he thought about how he would love to just rip the throats out of the men who captured him. He wouldn’t mind tainting his hands red with their deep crimson arterial blood; in his mind they deserved no better. Anger he wanted to kill them for what they had done to the others, what they were likely continuing to do to the others. What they had done to…Then confusion. Something deep inside him hurt. But it wasn’t revenge he wanted. No it hurt like something had been ripped away from him. This wall he hit, he didn’t know what it was but he was missing something. His memories, some of them gone and he had no idea why he felt this way. That was frustrating in the least as he shrugged and ran a hand through his hair hoping to buy himself a few seconds before piecing together an answer from the wave of emotions. It was punishing to feel like this, to feel helpless and at the mercy of what he could piece together in his own mind. To not know who you were before they ripped everything away from you.

“I can’t justify what he did, only that his morality was weak. And in a moment of weakness he allowed emotion to seep into a very calculated decision and Crescent fell victim to him. She had no choice; how could she? He erased everything she was and arranged her into what he wanted…what he needed. And allowed his emotions to rule him and dictate what she would be to him. And in a way he feared her, like…” He tried to come up with an accurate description she would understand.

“If you took a fighting dog whose sole purpose was to kill, maim and massacre everyone who wasn’t its owner. If you rescued this dog you would always be a little weary of it. Unless you really trusted it and knew exactly how to handle it. I suppose Tizack never brought himself to trust her because he didn’t know how. Once you construct so many lies, and then build on those lies it is difficult if not impossible to tell what is genuine and what is not. In a way…in a way he condemned her to a fate worse than death in giving her a life with him. He enslaved her.” He was well aware of what Tizack had done, but he still did not know the reasons. He was Tizack, but he was also Seven, Serrif, and likely other names as well. Each of them having a part of who he was; of what he was.

“We are all capable of horrors Kavala. It would be ignorant to say we were not. But I wake up every day and state with certainty that I am Serrif, not Seven, not Tizack but Serrif Von Chatlyn. And ever since I set foot in Mura and found what I was I decided I would live with certainty. My past selves may help form who I am, but they are not who I am. I am more than the sum of my past selves, of my past names and experiences. They make me wiser, jaded, and push me to conviction of action I woudl otherwise be ignorant to. But they are not me.” He stated with certainty as he nodded sure of what he had said and willing to stand by his words to his death.

He was NOT Seven, not anymore. He was owned by none, and would do what he wanted. But this experience helped him form his morality. He wouldn’t be coerced to action by anyone. He was not Tizack, he would not destroy someone’s life and let his emotions get in the way of sound judgment and action. Such things got in the way of direct planning and decisiveness. Sometimes he had to remove himself from emotion to make correct decisions, Tizack had shown him this. And he knew it to be truthful.

“I am Serrif.” He said plainly as he nodded. “This is who I chose to be; who I want to be. Who I am.”

Kavala didn't know about his pain, didn't understand about his time as Seven or the things he'd done in the camp where he was enslaved. She'd walked Tizack's chavi but not Serrifs, respecting his privacy in a way that Nysel followers rarely felt the need to do so.

So she listened when he spoke and nodded, not understanding his background or what he was feeling. Sure there was pain in his eyes, but she didn't know what it was about. And he volunteered nothing. But he seemed able to speak about Tizack and the past just fine, surprisingly agreeing with her instead of trying to justify his past actions. Unlike Serrif, Kavala knew that Serrif was Tizack just as much as she was Crescent and that would never change.

But his next words surprised her. He vehemently exclaimed he was Serrif and no one else. That Serrif was who he was. Kavala tilted her head and looked thoughtful. Since showing up, he'd tried to make himself feel useful but he rarely talked about anything or volunteered to laugh, smile, joke or do anything that really drew him into the group of who they were as people and denizens of Sanctuary. He kept himself apart, aloof, and seemed untrusting of who they were.

So Kavala decided to push him a bit... ask him an important question.

"And just who is that? We know you are from Mura. That you work for the Opal Order gathering information for them to expand their already expansive medical library... but that tells us almost nothing about you. I know you are exceptionally good at medicine, herbalism, and philtering, but I haven't seen you practice much. Who are you... who's Serrif?"
She said, quietly but firmly.

Who am i?That question bit hard on his mind, clamping down and refusing to shake free of his mind until answered. He could think of little else but the challenge Kavala had now laid out before him; so he began thinking…piecing everything together. But where was a good place to start? What to hide, what to reveal…

The need to be part of this place had been nipping at him; he had to gain her trust…and her respect. And where that started was giving trust. She had ever reason to be weary of him, in his past he had been a very dangerous man…and in this life he had been a morally questionable individual until now. But he couldn’t be judged by the actions he took alone; one had to put them into context. She had made the first leap of faith trusting him, bringing him into her home. She fed him, gave him a bed to rest in and a room to call his own; that was more than anyone else had ever done for him before now. She trusted him…it was about time he reciprocated the motion.

“I am a man of my convictions Kavala.” That was putting it simply…how could he convey what had been done to him, what made him the way he was…

Kavala would likely be the only one who really understood him. The others here didn’t know what forced slavery felt like. Hoe being kept out in the cold in an iron cage hardened your heart and made you untrusting of certain people. He couldn’t come up with a reason not to trust Kavala; if anyone needed to trust him it was Kavala. She ran this place, it was all hers created by her own hard work…and he wanted a place in all of it. So he continued.

“I was reborn in Mura. My heart heavy with rage and my vision clouded because I was starving and weak; Mura brought me back to health. When I was strong enough I took to learning medicine from the Order. ” But that wasn’t who he was…that was what he did, what made him.

His tone lowered and his eyes met hers and he answered her more directly. “Before the day my eyes fell on Mura…I was a slave. But not for labor.” He didn’t know how to put the situation before her in a way she would understand. How could he? He didn’t even completely understand what had happened to him there. His mind stretched for words…an explanation...anything that would relay his story effectively. He shook his head some and then defeated just decided the best method was to just simply show her…she could make her own decision from there.

Just show her!

“Sometimes words betray meaning.” Was all that he said as he shrugged and then continued as he took off his shirt and set it aside. “I understand how you feel about Crescent, because I too was a toy for another. I had everything of my memory before that place stripped from me. The only memories I have of it I carry with me, on my body.” And with that last bit said he slipped the top of his bodysuit off of his skin and there laid out before her in painful simplicity were Serrif’s memories.

It would be almost like looking at a horrific painting of kinds, his body the white mural canvas and the deep set scars were the brushstrokes of his artists. The brushes were a little more vicious than a simple horse hair painting tool. Across his skin were the marks of whips, restraints, and tools that she would recognize as usually being reserved for use in operating on the injured turned horribly around to cause harm. Even though his body was somewhat bronzed there were areas that were slightly lighter indicating the skin had been rubbed off completely leaving raw bleeding pockets exposed to the elements. The wounds did eventually heal each separately but they left behind a history on his body.

“This is the easiest way to show you, I know you are likely the only one that will really understand what this means…I want to do good in this life. Heal through my own skills and Rak’keli’s grace alike. Maybe even eventually teach what I know to others so they too may carry on healing and helping. But I am just unsure how to accomplish this lofty goal.” He was praying she would understand…because if not he was really alone here. Surely she had some understanding of what this meant…what these scars said about him. He wasn’t completely sure but he believed they had something in common; besides their intertwined pasts as Tizack and Crescent.

meets it head-on and licks it,
or he turns his back on it and starts to wither away.

Kavala stood stoic, watching him, listening. She sensed they were at a point, an important tipping point, where their relationship would grow deeper or the chasm would widen. Her eyes, moments before so dark and deep azure, paled to the lightest blue color that made her look blind when she was feeling a deep emotion as the clothing came away and his torso was revealed.

Her eyes met his, then dropped lower, scanning his body. She stepped closer, reaching out, and ran her hands across the nearest scar looking at it with both her vision and her gnosis. Much of him was scar tissue. She could tell not only by looking but by feeling. The Konti circled him once, then twice, careful not to miss even the smallest incision mark or brand.

Finally she stepped back, lifted her head, and met his gaze. "Take the rest of it off. I want to see all of it." She said suddenly, decisively, like it was an order that brokered no argument.
