Sanderson looked up at the young man. This one was a little cocky, he thought with a faint smile. He could hardly begrudge eager students, even among the ruin.

"Both classes are running - the forty mizas you would pay to enrol entitled you to a rent free dormitory in the Living Quarters."

The desk man's words lifted Shadahl's spirits, a flicker of a genuine smile crossing his face. "Excellent." He turned a moment and drew out a small stack of mizas, sliding them onto the table. "Forty golden-rimmed mizas, shiny and well spent." Winking with an air of respect for the man behind the counter, Shadahl gestured a loose hand. "Where and what shall I do now then?

"Well here you are," Sanderson said, exchanging the coins for a key fob. "All your other bits of class information will come to your dormitory."

He sighed wistfully, eyes flitting about the ruin beyond the window.

"Good luck with your studies."

Spring 15th, 512 AV

It was nearly too much; even after years of mental preparation, Ohrae wasn't prepared for the breathlessness that settled upon him as he entered the Registrar's Office. The air was cool and silken as he breathed lightly, taking in his surroundings keenly. I'm really here. I've made it to the University! The thought replayed repeatedly in his head, a mental mantra that accentuated every step as he unconsciously marched to its rhythm. There were other students (or perhaps potential students?) clustered around, discussing classes and subjects to be taken.

Okay, Ohrae said to himself bracingly, this is it. I just walk up to the man over there. What's his name? The tiny sign read Sanderson. Sanderson. I wait in line to see Mr. Sanderson and ask him about classes. I wonder how much money I'm going to have to give up. Paying no regard to that final stray thought, Ohrae approached the end of the line. Today, mercifully, the line wasn't incredibly long and many of the students passed through fairly quickly, until Ohrae was left, grinning somewhat insanely, in front of the aging Registrar. For a single moment that stretched over an infinite expanse of time, Ohrae simply did not know what to say. Even his mind was still, placid and silent as the awkwardness of the moment threaded him through.

Then he laughed. Just a short outburst; more of a chuckle, really. The tension that had built between his shoulderblades simply evaporated as he introduced himself: "Hello, Mr. Sanderson. My name is Ohrae Strakur. I'd like to register for classes: if there is an intermediate Shielding course available, I'd love to enroll in that. Also, if there are any introductory music classes, it would be great to learn some voice techniques. If not, then I'd love an introductory Reimancy class. Or do you think it would be okay for me to try for all three of those?"

That should run about 40 Mizas for the two and 55 for the three, if my eavesdropping skills are of any use, he said to himself, absently reaching for his money. "I would also like to have a room in the student's quarters, if there's space for me," Ohrae added with a smile, glad to have remembered. Having only just arrived in the city, he didn't have anywhere to stay for the night, and somewhere in his heart he knew that a night on the street would make for a bad start in his new life. I hope that the classes aren't filled!

"Hello Ohrae," Sanderson said absently, looking up at the student. "All three of those are available. Did you want to take two, or all of them? Two classes will set you back forty mizas, three would be fifty. Either way, you'll get a rent-free dormitory here."

Ohrae, after listening to the price for all three of the classes, felt another rush of giddiness. "Well, I suppose I'll pay the fifty for the three classes, then." He counted out the Mizas quickly, his hands shaking slightly as he gave away half of his savings. It's for a good cause -- I'm a student! At the University! The thoughts seemed to shiver along with his body as he handed the money over to the (infinitely more solemn) Registrar. Already he could imagine the introductory Reimancy classes and the musicality that he could obtain, as well as the improvements to his Shielding techniques. His mind was bursting as it filled with the hazy cloud of potentialities that the University had always embodied to him. He felt like bursting into (mediocre) song.

"I do have a couple of questions. When will my classes start, and how can I find them?" Ohrae asked these eagerly, hoping that he could start as soon as possible. "Oh, and thank you for your help, Mr. Sanderson." Ohrae flashed a sunny grin at the older man as he felt the rush of gratitude wash over him. "I really appreciate it."

"That's no problem," Sanderson said reluctantly, pulling the keys for the new students dormitory from the drawer. "A package with all the information you require will arrive at your dormitory shortly."

He handed over the keys, blinking heavily. It was as if he handed over a piece of his soul.

He wondered how much longer he could work in this crumbling ruin. Would Zeltiva ever be the same again?

TIMESTAMP: Spring 5th - 512 AV

As Lorth brushed his bulky form through the throng of people keeping the registrar's office busy, he found himself feeling reflective. Compared to the intimidating forests he was so used to, there were dwellings of stone and metal. Humans still used wood, he noted. But he was fascinated that they would rather chop trees apart so brutally, then stick them back together with thick nails of iron, rather then grow them into different shapes and sizes under the influence of a gentle caress and patience. Of course there was a certain durability that came with such barbaric methods, Lorth couldn't help but muse as to why everything was in ruins lately.

By the time he had reached the front desk, the Jamourian had already grown accustomed to the process happening before him. People handed the man money. He directed them to something called a "dormitory", and apparently information was sent to their individual abode. Stepping forward eagerly, Lorth began to speak,

"Hello. I'm here to apply for classes at the university." The large creature's voice was rich, deep, and slow. Possibly exotic to the man behind the counter, but more than likely not, as being a man who accepted applications every day all week, he'd most likely encountered Jamourians before.

"The classes I seek are.." Lorth hesitated before continuing. He'd heard tales of some societies looking down upon arcane talents. Zeltiva, having a university, hopefully wasn't one of them. "Projection, Reimancy, and the Flux. If there are world magics available, I'd like to take Glyphing and Animation as well."

The Jamoura was an unusual sight, but not the first. Sanderson peered through his glasses taking in the creature. It spoke with wisdom, and he had heard of the Spires and their intellectual nature.

"All the classes are available... but... five classes? That would cost seventy mizas, and you would be incredibly busy?"

He had heard of the Jamoura as a studious race, but this was... ambitious.

Lorth nodded his head and placed the correct amount on the table. He understood the workload would be far from easy but it wasn't unmanageable. He had the time. More than enough time.

"I understand what I'm signing up for.." His lips curled into a smile that seemed to be filled with an aged wisdom, as well as a youthful curiosity. "And I'm willing to pay the price to know everything. Money is just an item, as they say." The Jamoura paused slowly before continuing. "My dormitory room. When can I expect information to be sent there?.."

Giving a passing glance to the ruins around him, he couldn't help but wonder how suitable the living conditions would be.
