Spring 15th, 512 AV
It was nearly too much; even after years of mental preparation, Ohrae wasn't prepared for the breathlessness that settled upon him as he entered the Registrar's Office. The air was cool and silken as he breathed lightly, taking in his surroundings keenly. I'm really here. I've made it to the University! The thought replayed repeatedly in his head, a mental mantra that accentuated every step as he unconsciously marched to its rhythm. There were other students (or perhaps potential students?) clustered around, discussing classes and subjects to be taken.
Okay, Ohrae said to himself bracingly, this is it. I just walk up to the man over there. What's his name? The tiny sign read Sanderson. Sanderson. I wait in line to see Mr. Sanderson and ask him about classes. I wonder how much money I'm going to have to give up. Paying no regard to that final stray thought, Ohrae approached the end of the line. Today, mercifully, the line wasn't incredibly long and many of the students passed through fairly quickly, until Ohrae was left, grinning somewhat insanely, in front of the aging Registrar. For a single moment that stretched over an infinite expanse of time, Ohrae simply did not know what to say. Even his mind was still, placid and silent as the awkwardness of the moment threaded him through.
Then he laughed. Just a short outburst; more of a chuckle, really. The tension that had built between his shoulderblades simply evaporated as he introduced himself: "Hello, Mr. Sanderson. My name is Ohrae Strakur. I'd like to register for classes: if there is an intermediate Shielding course available, I'd love to enroll in that. Also, if there are any introductory music classes, it would be great to learn some voice techniques. If not, then I'd love an introductory Reimancy class. Or do you think it would be okay for me to try for all three of those?"
That should run about 40 Mizas for the two and 55 for the three, if my eavesdropping skills are of any use, he said to himself, absently reaching for his money. "I would also like to have a room in the student's quarters, if there's space for me," Ohrae added with a smile, glad to have remembered. Having only just arrived in the city, he didn't have anywhere to stay for the night, and somewhere in his heart he knew that a night on the street would make for a bad start in his new life. I hope that the classes aren't filled!
