Zeltiva CS Template Name: Calen Race: Human Age: 19 Birthday: Spring, Day 9, 494 AV Character Concept APPEARANCE An individual that one would have trouble finding when making their way through a crowd, Calen easily can be described as an individual who is ‘average’ in appearance. Calen much like his father stands at only 68 inches, meaning that he is roughly an inch or so below the average height for an individual who hails from the region of Mizahar that his parents do. It certainly does not help Calen's position as a man of noticeably unimposing stature that he walks with a slight slouch. Mostly due to the lifestyle that he has chosen to live, one centered primarily upon studying and learning, Calen has managed to maintain a weight of only 145 lbs for years now, meaning he is only just within his weight bracket, when one takes into consideration both his build and size. Needless to say, when Calen removes his shirt, his lanky, relatively unimpressive physique does not do much to strike fear into the hearts of evil-doers and lust in the loins of maidens; Underneath his clothing, Calen has no real muscle to speak of, but at the same time, he certainly is not chubby, truth be told, Calen looks slightly unhealthy when he strips due to his seemingly underdeveloped body. On the subject of Calen’s body, at least when unclothed, Calen sports a large, rather ungainly scar that stretches from the back of his right shoulder to his left hip. Calen received this scar when he managed to ‘fall’ down an incredibly gravely hill, early on in his childhood. Calen, unlike his brother, has managed to inherit his father's strangely pleasant eyes of grayish-blue, many have taken note that despite the fact that they are indeed a mix of gray and blue, assuming one does not look closely, they can easily be mistaken for the shade of blue that his mother sports. Never having been one for the constant irritation of hair in one's eyes, Calen, in almost direct contrast to both his brother and father, cuts his dark brown locks as soon as he considers them to be even a bit of a nuisance. Truth be told, the only thing that one can say for certain Calen inherited from his mother would be his skin-tone; his skin has been called everything from tan to mulatto, the latter of which Calen himself uses to describe it. Unfortunately, Calen's mother also managed to pass on her tendency to freckle to her younger son, and as such, Calen has been forced into more conservative wear all of his life, not that he has ever complained. PERSONALITY Having been raised, for the most part, by a pair of loving, if a bit busy, parents in a city like Zeltiva, Calen has turned just as one would expect such an individual to: A caring, thoughtful, though sarcastic and terribly inappropriate young man. Calen’s resemblance to his father does not just end at his physical appearance, he has also managed to inherit his father’s caring and generous nature, though he goes about acting upon this portion of his personality in a different fashion. Having spent over a decade watching the man who raised him give away what he worked his hands to the bone to obtain to the less fortunate, Calen came to the conclusion, rather early on in life, that people, all people, are truly avarice creatures. However, this realization did not discourage Calen from wanting to help others; instead, it inspired him to help them learn to help themselves. To gives the explanation a metaphorical example it, if Calen’s father was a man who would give a starving man a fish, Calen would give him a fishing rod, and an easily imitable example. This philosophy of pragmatic examination and assistance has guide Calen through most of his social and economic relationships, which is the main reason why he has so few successful ones. Calen’s lack of successful relationships troubles him, but only when he stops and considers what he could have done different. Calen’s inappropriateness is born of a lesson that his brother made sure that he learned early on in life; If you enjoy it, or it looks like it might be fun, give it a shot. This has led to Calen developing what can only be described as 'remarkably immature' demeanor, even if he does, and he most certainly does, hold both the intelligence and the knowledge that what he is doing is socially unacceptable. Calen's aforementioned immaturity, which, more times than not, manifests itself in his speech patterns means that Calen most perceive Calen as easygoing and a bit annoying, not that he minds. Truth be told, a large portion of Calen's immaturity is born more of his inherent cowardice than anything else. By making a joke or at least attempting to, out of even the most serious of situations, Calen is capable of laughing off any failure he might encounter regarding that situation. However, at the same time, should he succeed, he is able to brag without a feeling arrogance. This, sub-consciously active plot is what gives him the confidence necessary to make satirical comments one after another. However, as much as Calen hates to look like he is giving anything his all, he is known as a studious individual as academics are the one activity that he is willing to tarnish his name as a joker for; part of the programming his mother is responsible for. When one reduces him to his bare elements, Calen is little more than a man terrified of both the world around him and his own place in it; a coward in the guise of a comedian. Character History Calen was born the second son to a pair of rather successful young adults living within the confines of the city of Zeltiva. Despite the fact that they were only just entering their mid-twenties the couple had already had two children, which is what was behind the couple’s, relatively, strange situation at home; Neither parent looked after the children at home, instead, both of them choosing to leave the boys with a nanny, and her young daughter, who helped out for free, only ever seeing them briefly before they went to bed. This, of course, led to a great attachment developing between the two boys and the nanny’s daughter. It goes without saying, that before he even understood the concept of love or even truly affection, Calen found himself in love with Elizabeth, his Nanny’s daughter. Unfortunately, Calen’s brother, the eight year old Garth, was just as infatuated with the young girl as his brother was and, there was only an age gap of one year as opposed to Calen’s gap of three. It was this situation that sparked the rivalry that would last a lifetime between the two boys. Around the time of Calen’s ninth birthday, their mother came home from her workplace as the assistant at the city’s university with some great news; she was going to be an assistant professor of Reimancy. Unfortunately, this news was accompanied with the statement that the prior assistant professor, an old family friend, had managed to get into a scuffle whilst drunk, ending up with him overgiving and, unfortunately, crippling him. Nonetheless, the family took it upon themselves to hold a celebration for Calen’s mother at Calen’s grandmother’s, on his mother’s side, home. Due to the fact that she lived in the city, it was not dangerous to travel there but it was dangerous for them to bring along the boy’s Nanny and her daughter as it inspired Calen’s brother to push him down a hill. Though he did it as a joke to impress Elizabeth, he managed to badly injure the child. This was the event that began Calen’s understanding that his brother was just as aware that they were rivals in love as he was. It was also this event, or more precisely, the fact that Calen began to pay attention to what people around him were doing and attempting to figure out what they were thinking that resulted in his discovery of his talent for reading auras. Though Calen paid no mind to the temporary and typically shocking glimpses into people’s aura that he got, he learned to summon them on will through great concentration. It was during one of his attempts to delve deeper into what Elizabeth was thinking as she spoke in whispers to his brother, the both of them being thirteen and Calen being ten at the time, that Calen’s mother inquired about her son’s staring. Though it took her quite a while to pry the knowledge from him, she soon learned of her son’s talent and began to investigate into it, having heard of it in passing once. It would take a week of light investigating to learn what exactly her son was capable of was typically called. Soon after revealing the new information to the family at large, including Elizabeth and her mother, Calen found himself the subject of attention for the next few days and he found his skill in his ability to discern things from people’s aura growing as Elizabeth asked him to check what her aura said about her every two hours or so. It was this new attention on his little brother that would inspire Garth to begin to investigate into what he was capable of. Three or so years would pass without much incident until finally, Garth made it clear that he was not interested in staying at home and instead, would attempt to enroll in the University where his mother had made her career. Though his parents were initially against it, Garth managed to convince them he was university material when he managed to get in, though for something relating to mathematics, a subject his private tutors, revealed he did quite well in. It was this event that would decide Calen’s choice in what he aimed to do for the rest of his life. Though he had assumed his life would be easier, especially when it came to the wooing of Elizabeth, Calen found that he was a little bit depressed with his brother gone. Though he did his best to be humored by Elizabeth and her mother’s attempts to cheer him up, he fell into a minor depression that would eventually give birth to his more recent pessimistic outlook on the world at large. It was during this depression that Calen made it clear that he was interested in pursuing something to do with ‘Reimancy’ at the University of Zeltiva. This, of course, garnered a less than positive response from his parents’ who were much more interested in their son studying something more applicable and socially acceptable; after all, the family hid what Calen’s mother did, and she was rather well liked in their community. Though they spent almost four years attempting to convince their son to do something else, Calen absolutely refused and, in fact, began to sneak peeks at his mother’s work notes in her private work room before and after she would come home. However, it was on one of these little nighttime study sessions that Calen found himself caught by his mother, who, though tired was absolutely furious with her youngest son. After a heated argument, which was more than sufficient enough to wake both her husband and Elizabeth, who now acted as the housekeeper in her sickly mother’s stead, Calen made it perfectly clear that he was not, in anyway, aiming to stop his pursuit of knowledge when it came to Reimancy. This revelation ended the argument and Calen retreated to his room where he would be visited by his mother and his father the next morning. It was on the aforementioned morning that Calen learned that his mother was willing to initiate him into Reimancy under one condition; he dare not become anyone’s apprentice until he was, at least, a student at the University of Zeltiva. Though he was reluctant, Calen agreed and his less than pleased mother proceeded with the initiation that evening, much to Calen’s father’s chagrin. Though he suffered greatly, his body twitching violently as he felt as if the inside of his body was playing host to an insanely boisterous party, Calen managed to make it through the initiation safely. It was just before he passed out due in equal parts to exhaustion caused by the initiation and just general fatigue that he learned why his mother had done what she had; she was afraid that if he were to be initiated by another individual, another, perhaps untrustworthy individual she might end up losing Calen, perhaps for life. It was this event that taught Calen that though his mother was strict, aloof and rather cold at times, she truly did care, in her own, strange way. After another year, a year spent under his mother’s tutelage Calen attempted to get into the University, and managed to succeed. It was at this point that Calen confessed his almost lifelong love for Elizabeth, only to discover that his brother had managed to woo her in secret and the two were engaged. Though he was heartbroken, Calen did not let it show, instead, he simply took up a few more courses than he had originally planned to at the university and moved into its dormitory. He also launched himself into his studies to heal his forlorn heart. Calen currently studies Magic with a focus on Reimancy. Calen has yet to make any sort of real friends at university, much to his own disappointment.
