73rd of Spring, 510 AV

Slowly, a mist started to creep over the miles of trees that made up the Bronze Woods. The endless green becoming distorted, and losing definition as the sun started to set. The animal population started to settle down, their routines and habits paving the way for the creatures of the night to awaken and take to their hunting grounds. It was of these that a single small fox emerged from its hole. Its familiar surroundings had been disturbed. Frantically, it dodged about. Under a twig here, over a fallen log there. It smelled, something. Something big. Scampering forward, the animal found itself on an area absent of plants, and staring at a rather large, four-legged animal. In the failing light, the creature looking up, and found a pair of blue eyes staring back.

Looking down onto a set of golden eyes, Weyliss studied the small fox, and then dismissed it. His thoughts where heavy, and as his horse made its way down the winding trail, the warrior found himself lost in thought. Gripping the reigns, the man looked up to the sky with a single sigh.

Yesterday had been long. The young man had been drinking his usual. Minding his own business, when a young boy had stumbled into the bar. Yelling all manner of obscenities and brandishing a cooking knife. He had even gone so far as to cut into the barkeeper's arm. Weyliss found himself settling the dispute, and escorting the emotional kid home. His mother had spoken on her son's behalf. Her husband, had gone missing. A good week away from his work as a bookseller within Stormhold Castle. When she went to his shop, she had found the place had been ransacked, and blood was everywhere. In the basement a corpse had been found. The knights where in an uproar. The wife insisted her husband was innocent, and had been kidnapped by shady sorts. While, the knights mentioned the family was new in town, and hailed from the lawless streets of Sunberth. It was obvious the man had brought something shady with him. There was no doubt that it was a feud. What Weyliss couldn't be sure of, is if the father had killed this mystery man in self defense, or if it had been... something more?

Now the young warrior was on the road. At the behest of the missing man's wife, he had decided to head to the old Aylasa caves. Famed as one of the many hiding places of humanity during the Valterrian, the husband had been there before. The wife wouldn't say why. A whole lot of things didn't make sense. Weyliss had done his best to catch up on all of the rumors, but he simply didn't have time It was frustrating, because a single conversation with a one-handed stranger in a bar, had yielded some rather disturbing news. The man told the tale of a man from Sunberth, working as part of a group of small time criminals. He was their book-keeper, keeping records of the money they made. Or, if you listened to the bartender when he interjected, the man was the leader. Either way, it was assumed that he either dealt with killers, or was one himself.

Weyliss re-adjusted the longsword sheath laying across his back. It was getting dark, but he knew the trail was coming to an end soon. He needed to find the entrance to the caves. His goal was simple, take the man back to Syliras for questioning. The Knights could be the judge of any wrong-doing. The warrior hoped he could bring resolution for the family. He hadn't sensed any trickery on their part, and he dealt with people on a pretty regular basis. It all fell down to faith. Faith that he was doing the right thing.

Bringing a gloved hand across his forehead, the man pulled up on the reigns. He could see the clearing up ahead. The only things visible where rocks, and brush, but he new, that over the rocks, was the entrance to the cave system. Wrapping the reigns around a nearby tree, he pulled his gear from the saddlebags. Pulling some hay from a pouch, he tossed it at the base of the tree for the horse. He wasn't entirely sure of what to bring gear-wise. His bow would be pointless in the tunnels, so instead he grabbed a few torches, and mentally berated himself for forgetting the rope. Removing the cloak, the man slung the sword sheathe across his back, and then checked his leather cuirass, and greaves. Everything was snug, and wouldn't shift in a fall or a fight. Letting out a small breath, the man bowed his head for a second.

"Let me do right."

With the last bits of sunlight, the young man started forward into the cave.

[The Aylasa Caves]Both sides of the coin.(Eris)

Postby Eris on April 22nd, 2010, 3:26 am

She should have never agreed to this. It was pointless, like looking for a needle in a haystack – a very slippery, evil needle. The promised money was a nice, round sum, though. She had assumed that it would be worth all the trouble, but was quickly finding out that that was not to be the case. Damn, the man. How can someone disappear so completely? It’s impossible, that’s what it is. Simply impossible to leave no trace of oneself after ordering the murder of three business partners and running off with all the money. There was no note left to a mistress, nothing leading back to the assassins he must have hired…

Eris scowled to herself. There was no way this man could be better at escaping than she was at following. Her pride just couldn’t allow for that. Except, he did leave one clue. It was so nonessential and absurd, that it couldn’t possibly be true…

Rhine whined impatiently, throwing her head from side to side. Eris put a hand on the horse’s nose, trying to calm her into silence. She was beginning to regret brining the mare along. A few hours ago she thought that if she picked up the man’s trial, it would be useful to have a horse nearby to start the chase. She thought she would have had a lead by now. But all she had were a grumpy horse and wet shoes.

A tree branch scraped across Eris’s shoulder, causing the woman to swat at it in annoyance. All because of that damned camping gear. It wasn’t so much what the man left as what he didn’t leave. When he disappeared from under the watchful eye of his fourth business partner (this one, very much alive and vexed) he had taken some camping gear from the man’s basement. Or at least, he had appeared to take it. His host just noticed that the gear wasn’t in its rightful place in the basement – a basement that he hadn’t looked into for years. For all she knew, Mr. Kerrington might have misplaced the equipment years ago and was simply letting his imagination run a little wild. Nevertheless, Eris was obliged to check out his little theory.

Pretty soon, Eris arrived at the entrance of the cave system Kerrington had told her about. Did the man really think his ex-partner would trudge through this place in his tailored, jewel-studded suit? She would still have to try it.

Eris sighed, letting go of Rhine’s bridle. The horse neighed gratefully and immediately commenced to chew on the lush, green grass. Suddenly, Eris heard a rustling sound coming from behind a nearby tree. Her hand on her dagger, the woman slowly crept around the trunk. It was a horse - just a horse. Eris let out a relieved breath. The good news was, there was nobody in the clearing. The bad news – there would most definitely be someone in the cave.

Eris decided not to tie Rhine up. She knew from experience that the horse wouldn’t wander too far off and it would probably be safer to leave her with the chance to run in the case of danger. Throwing one last look at the content mare, Eris parted the bushes in her way and entered the cave opening.

[The Aylasa Caves]Both sides of the coin.(Eris)

Postby Weyliss on April 22nd, 2010, 4:11 am

It was dark. Weyliss had found the first few feet of the cave had been deceptive. He had assumed that at least some of the light from the outside filled the cave, instead, he found himself in a tunnel. It lead downward, and then opened into a massive cavern. The huge area was filled with giant slabs of rock everywhere. The cavern 'ceiling' was covered in stalactites, while the 'floor' was adorned with the usual stalagmites between the boulders. For a long moment, Weyliss stood still, hoping his eyes would adjust to the light. Still clutching his unlit torches, the man squatted down, hoping to make out some sort of exits to the room. It was simply too dark.

Heaving a sigh, the young warrior slowly drew his sword from its scabbard, the sound of metal scratching could be heard much farther then Weyliss had originally anticipated, and with a frown, the man ducked even lower. Resting the sword on the rock next to him, the young man withdrew some flint and tinder from one of his belt pouches. Scraping the iron chunk against the flint, the man tried unsuccessfully to light one of the torches. With an exasperated sigh, he suddenly stopped.

Listening, he peered about, swearing he had heard something...

There, again.

He was sure of it now, and with a start, the warrior stuffed the flint and tinder back into the pouch. Pulling the drawstrings out, he grabbed up his sword, and a single torch. He hated to waste one, but if that was his target...

Moving in the direction of the noise, the young man scrambled over the edge of a boulder, and then down into a small 'alleyway'. Turning, he barely caught glimpse of a small glimmer, before something heavy crashed into him. Reeling, the young man hurled himself back, and into a hard rock face. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see something coming at him. It was instinct that let the torch drop, and bring his arm up defensively. In the next second something ripped into his unprotected arm, while simultaneously something heavy crashed into his side. Cursing in pain, Weyliss twisted and delivered a harsh kick in the direction of his attacker. The steel-toed boot connected with something and he heard a loud groan. Grasping his sword in both hands, Weyliss assumed a fighters' stance. His adversary was barely visible in the blackness, but he could make out the whites of the eyes, as well as a grim smile. He also seemed to be wielding a long-knife and a stick of some sort.

Breathing heavily, Weyliss quickly inched back towards the wall, raising the sword in a 'high-ready'. The longsword was raised above his head, with the handle perpendicular to his skull. Inching diagonally back, it was a common knightly stance, giving the user greater control, and speed over the blade. Should his opponent get too close, he could bring down all of his weight, as well as momentum into a single strike. His opponent leaped forward, slashing with the dirk wildly, and keeping the stick up. Weyliss found his back against the wall as he brought the heavy sword down at his attacker. The man was quick, and got away with a graze on the shoulder. Ducking to the right the man repeatedly swung the stick at his head, while keeping the sword close to himself. Weyliss repeatedly swung the sword in short diagonal arcs, hoping to catch the other man. He was rewarded with the tip of his blade catching the man's chest. A loud grunt, and he quickly backpedaled and hurled the stick. By the time Weyliss looked back, his opponent had dissapeared around the corner.

Weyliss stood his ground. It was dark, and judging by the burning in his arm, he had taken more then a glancing blow. Laying the sword in front of him, the man quickly pawed at the ground in an effort to find his torch, it took several minutes to find it, and several more to light it, but the warrior was rewarded with light, and found he was wedged in a small area between two massive boulders. Gasping for breath, he studied his arm, noting the gash was quite deep, and probably going to infect if he left it unattended. Frustrated, the young man realized he had lost any element of surprise. Obviously, he had not found his man, but probably a hired goon, of the book-keeper, or maybe kidnappers, he wasn't sure. He remembered the man's name being Alcherion. He couldn't remember the last name.

Putting his back against the stone, Weyliss sunk to a sitting position. He drew his sword onto his lap, and then pushed the bottom of the torch under his crotch until he was practically sitting on it. The sword blade kept the torch at least up, and Weyliss could feel the heat and flame singing at his face. He would work quickly. He had cared for more wounds then he liked to admit. Withdrawing a small pouch, he pulled a vial and some torn cloth out. The vial contained a plant that supposedly 'cleansed' wounds, and kept them free of infection. He wasn't sure how well it was recieved in medical circles, but he supposed it had worked well enough. Rolling up his tunic's sleeve, the young man dabbed some of the extract directly on the wound, and then winced as he started to wrap.

[The Aylasa Caves]Both sides of the coin.(Eris)

Postby Eris on April 22nd, 2010, 10:15 pm

Eris trudged along the twisting, stone pathway, making sure to duck her head at low-hanging pieces of rock. She could hear her feet splashing in the shallow puddles that hid themselves in the crevices of the ground. The further away she wandered from the opening, the darker the tunnel got, until she was no longer able to see more than a few steps ahead of her. Eris brought her satchel close to her chest, worried about having the soft leather catch on the sharp rocks. The last thing she needed was to have all the contents of her bag splayed over the tunnel floor.

Suddenly, Eris heard a noise echo throughout the tunnel. The sound reverberated from wall to wall, finally seeming to die away somewhere behind her. She couldn’t quite place what the echo was. Perhaps, a minor rockslide… But no, the sound was too clean-cut for that. It sounded more like metal. And if there was metal, there were people.

Eris drew her dagger and quickened her pace, not wishing to be caught in the narrow tunnel if enemies were about. After a few minutes of walking, the tunnel ceiling began to rise until she found herself at the entrance of a cavern. The entrance itself was narrow and partially covered by stones. Eris barely squeezed through the opening, to find herself standing in a spacious cavern of some sort.

The darkness had lessened from pitch black to a shadowy dimness. Eris gripped her dagger tighter in her hand as she looked around for the source of the light. Cautiously, she edged around one of the gigantic rocks that had previously obscured her view, only to see the burning light of a torch. And by the torch, crouched someone familiar…

Eris opened her mouth, closed it, then opened it again. “You- What are you doing here?” she asked incredulously.

The warrior twisted the bandage around his arm, and then... a voice. His reactions where instinct, and with a single, sharp movement, he reared his head back, and grabbed the torch. He probably didn't anticipate the rock, and winced as it made itself known to the back of his head. The sword clambered to the ground as he tried to anticipate his attackers next move. Unfortunately, she simply stood there, blinking at him.

Pausing, Weyliss tried to place the face. Holding the torch out with a bloodied hand, the man's face wrinkled in confusion.

A stone garden... a... beautiful artist...an assass-

He didn't bother finishing the thought, instead crouching down, and ungracefully scooping up the sword. The face hardened, and the man placed one foot out in front of the other, obviously striking a combative stance.

"You work for Alcherion's kidnappers. Where is he?"

The face gave nothing, and the man slowly pulled his arm back until he was looking down the sword's blade at Eris. If his injured arm pained him, he gave no indication, instead focusing on the woman's legs and arms, hoping to anticipate whatever move she might make next.

Eris’s eyebrows jumped up as she saw the man smack his head against the stone. She was about to ask if he was alright, when he went for his sword. So no friendly reception, then. Eris brought her dagger up in front of her, slightly at an angle so as to be better parry his sword if he struck. She hoped, things wouldn’t get that far, though.

“I have no idea who this Alcherion is and I would appreciate it if you stopped pointing that thing at me,” she said calmly, nodding at the sword in his hand.

The initial surprise of seeing him had worn off and now, she was simply trying to stay calm. She felt her senses going into hyper-mode, physically preparing herself for an attack. But, she knew that fighting wouldn’t be wise at the moment. He seemed on edge and if she made any sudden movements, he might strike. Frankly, she had no desire to fight in the dark.

Frowning, Weyliss grimaced, and let the sword drop to his side. She probably could have run him through while he was trying to wrap his wound. Noting the arm in question, he could see strands of red running down the arm, and starting to form droplets. Glowering at the woman he practically pouted.

"But.. you. Hmm. Kill things. People. Whatever!"

He was obviously irritated, and the back of his head was not helping. In an irritated gesture he sheathed the sword. He wasn't entirely certain she wasn't trying to catch him off guard, but.. he had a few tricks up his sleeve. There where more ways to take care of that knife...However, the gash would continue to bleed, so instead he leaned back against the wall and regarded the woman for a long moment before speaking.

"Eris. I don't forget a pretty name. What are you doing here? Out for a stroll? I just got attacked by some form of hired goon, and with you being... hire-able. I assumed that you had as well."

He wasn't sure what else to say. He wasn't feeling particularly polite, what with random people trying to maim him and all.

Postby Eris on April 23rd, 2010, 12:27 am

Eris tried and failed to suppress a laugh at his little outburst. The man was full of surprises. First he was drinking in garden, now he was bleeding in a cave.

“I promise I’m not here to kill any things today,” she said, her voice dripping with amusement.

However, her tone quickly grew serious when he mentioned being attacked. That meant there was someone else in the cave. Perhaps that someone was her target. And here she was, so certain that Kerrington had been wrong in assuming Telther would be in the caves. She realized that she was still gripping her dagger and drew it back into its sheath.

“I’m here for a job, but not of the…killing kind.” At least not yet. “But who is it who attacked you, exactly? Did you get a good look at him? His size, distinguishing features, weapon?”

Suddenly she felt pressed for time. She didn’t like knowing that there might be someone else in these dark, narrow tunnels. Particularly someone with a weapon. As an afterthought, she realized that she didn’t know how severe Weyliss’s wound was. She didn’t need him passing out from blood loss. “Is it serious?” she inquired, nodding at his arm.

Weyliss bristled. His face twitched as he tried to contain himself. He'd start worshipping Ivak before he let an ASSASSIN examine his arm. Still holding the torch with an injured hand, he bent down and picked up the strips of cloth. He wasn't entirely sure where the vial had gone, and as he straightened back up, gave the red-head a withering glare. Or.. a fierce one anyway.

"I'm fine."

"The man who attacked me was wielding a stick, and a long-knife, maybe a dirk. He knew the area well, and ducked off in that direction. Bald, burly, beard."

As if it wasn't humiliating enough to be caught off guard by a freaking artist assassin, he had been bested by a man with a stick and a knife. He snarled as he pulled the cloth tight around the wound. It was adequate for now, and wouldn't bleed all over the place.

Looking about, the man tried to best gauge where his adversary had gone. Resting his free hand on the sword, he gave the woman one last glare, as if she was somehow responsible for everything. Then he started to head in deeper into the cavern, there had to be an exit somewhere.

Well, wasn’t someone grumpy today? Eris couldn’t quite understand why the man seemed so angry. Sure, he might have gotten a knife stabbed through his arm, but there was no need to be so cross about it. And what kind of warrior was he anyway to be beaten by someone brandishing a stick?

At least now, Eris was sure that the man’s attacker wasn’t her target. There was no way Telther could know the cave system well and from what her employer had told her, he didn’t wear a beard. And he’d probably be the last person wielding a stick. The bastard wouldn’t touch anything worth less than a golden sword inset with jewels.

“And where, pray tell, are you going? Hoping to take revenge on the stick-bearer?” Eris asked, trying to smother any hints of sarcasm that were slipping into her voice.

She didn’t particularly like the idea of letting the man wander off. She planned to be continue her search for Telther and with this unknown attacker, possibly Telther himself, and now Weyliss wandering about, it was two people too many to watch out for.
