Stranger in a Strange Land (Ha'na & Sam)

"I think I was taught to survive, actually. I just don't think they knew how badly I would need those skills in the years to come..."

He picked at his food for a moment, then started eating again. He was too skinny, and took any opportunity to eat. She was lucky he was trying to do so with some modicum of decorum.

She bent over to put more honey onto his plate next. Yes, he was far too skinny. She would take it upon herself to fatten him up. Sitting back for a moment, she simply watched him.

"Survival is a very useful type of skill to have..." She peered at him, pausing to sip her water politely. "I think it's important... Without survival you're not able to build your life into a happy one."

"Well, you must know about survival," he said. "You must've traveled farther than I have if you came from Eyktol."

Ooh, clever parry and now they were talking about Ha'na again, to which he was much more amenable. If the topic of conversation became his past, he would have to go and... do... something...

She knew this song and dance he was doing, because she was actually quite good at it herself when she wanted to be. There was a glance up to him. She offered a rather disarming smile.

"I've always relied more on faith and kindness within others. But..." She tipped her head to the side, still smiling. "I've been everywhere. I'm sure if you're not from here, we've been to at least one place that was the same."

"Possibly. I've been mostly in the Sylira Region, though. Not everywhere. Not hardly." He smiled self-deprecatingly.

There. Right there. She had him caught between imaginary fingers like a wiggling worm. Her gaze lifted from her plate up to him - The action done with such casual grace that it should have been studied as near theatrics.

"If not everywhere then where?" she asked softly, sweetly.

"I just said... around the Sylira Region... into Taldera some when it wasn't too cold..."

He blinked at her, then took a morsel from her plate, not sure what she was up to.

"I was hoping you'd elaborate more. I'm always interested in where others have been... What they've seen."

It seemed innocent enough.

"Ahh... Lisnar, Zeltiva, Sunberth, Nyka, Novallis, Karjin... Lots of little towns in between, too."

He glanced at her, munching away, expecting a quid pro quo.

“Ahnatep, Claridon, Endrykas, Riverfall, Black Rock…”

She took a bite of the meat, unused to having it as a midday meal, and holding up a blackened finger as a sign that he should wait for her to continue.

“Back to Riverfall, Kenash, Alvadas, the foothills underneath Sultros, Wind Reach, Avanthal…”

She paused again, rolling her eyes skywards if trying to locate the names.

“Back to Wind Reach, across Kalea, the Suvan Sea, Cyphrus to Zeltiva, Ravok, Sunberth, Nyka…”

She turned her eyes to him. She’d traveled quite a ways and in a pattern that made no sense.

“Finally Syliras. Here.”
