Aveira was sitting against the wall of the castle, crying her eyes out. She was five years old, or ten in human years. Unfortunately, she wasn't human, as everyone was clearly aware. Although she'd never lived anywhere else or even seen another of her kind, Aveira was treated like an outcast.

A few hours prior her parents had dyed her fur for the first time. The silken gray strands were now a bright white. She had been dunked in a small tub of ammonia-based dye that her parents had bought from a local store. The dye was supposed to be used only for dying cloths, but Aveira's adoptive parents had told her it would work on fur too. What they hadn't mentioned was the fact that ammonia burned. The young zith was now covered in chemical burns. Her face had taken the worst of it, though she had been very careful not to get any near her eyes.

Though the pain was excruciating, Aveira had been willing to deal with it if it meant fitting in more. Her parents were hoping that she'd look less menacing with lighter fur. Unfortunately, they were right. The other children were less afraid of Aveira when they saw her, and therefore had no need to hold back. The human children, keen to pick on anyone different, had spent the last hour chasing Aveira around, throwing sticks and rocks at her.

It was ten minutes ago that she'd managed to escape. Now she couldn't hold back the flood of tears. Whether it was from the red-hot burns or the memory of the hatred the others had shown her, Aveira had finally broken down. She cried desperately, wrapping her wings around herself in an attempt to hide from the world.

[FLASHBACK] Ziths Suck, Humans Do Too (open)

It was today that I was to leave Syliras. My ship was leaving tonight and I decided to take one more walk around this town before I left. I hadn't been here long, I was just passing through.

I rounded the corner of a large stone building and almost tripped on what at first appeared to be a large leather bag. I stumbled to the side after dropping my backpack and flinging a leg over it to try and avoid falling. But then I heard something strange. Sobbing. I looked closer and saw that it was no bag, but wings, leathery wings engulfing a small creature. I'd never seen anything like it before.

"Excuse me, do you speak the common language? Why are you crying?" I said, still cautious of the strange creature. Especially so after seeing it's claws. "Do you need help? I can get the gaurd for you if you'd like?" I said, collecting my things from the near fall. My bag had opened and among the things that spilled out were my amulet, which now lay right in front of the creature.

I reached for it slowly and cautiously.

"No!" Aveira said, reaching for his arm and looking up at him desperately. Her Common was perfect; she'd never spoken any other language. "P-please don't g-get the guards..." she managed to get out through her sobs. Hastily drying her eyes, she tried to calm herself down. Whenever the guards managed to see her, they usually hurt her. Then, when her parents found out about it, they'd hurt her too. She was already hurt enough. Dealing with the guards would probably break her.

Aveira payed no attention to the amulet other than to give it a curious glance. Collecting herself, Aveira realized he probably didn't know what she was. A lot of travelers didn't, though they all managed to fear her. She could tell even this man was wary of her claws. "I'm sorry for being in your way," she sniffled.

Wincing a little, she looked down at her arms. Her wings had protected her when he'd tripped, but moving her arms so quickly had hurt the burns she got. Her wings unconsciously moved to enclose her again. She was a little girl that needed protection from a possibly dangerous stranger. She wanted her mother, but her mother didn't want her. The tears began to flow again.

I flinched when she reached out. Despite her crying she was an intimidating creature. But still, the poor thing seemed so hurt by something. I wonder what?

"It's okay, I won't get the guards" I said hastily, "Are you in some kind of trouble?" I wondered. I could relate to that. I've been in trouble everywhere I went since I left home. I only ever did what I was taught to do.

With the rest of my things now in my backpack I slung it over my shoulder. I looked at her with as much compassion (and restrained fear) as I could and asked her,
"What happened to you?"

Aveira pulled back, a jolt of fear running through her as he flinched away from her. She didn't want to scare him. She sometimes forgot how monstrous she must look to other people. Curling up, her claws hidden in her lap, she looked down and spoke softly, drying her eyes and getting control of her voice.

"Momma tried to fix me with this stuff that burns. It made me lighter, but it hurts really bad." She indicated her fur with a nod of her head. "The other people aren't afraid of me anymore," she said. "But they still don't like me..."

She thought back to the pain she'd experienced and flinched. "The knights don't like me either," she said. "Daddy says its because they don't want a bad monster in their city. He says it's cause I'm bad and it's to keep everyone safe." She glanced up at him, but then back down. Aveira had no idea why she was telling him all this. Maybe she just needed someone to confide in. Maybe she just wanted a friend. Whatever the case, she desperately hoped she didn't regret it later.

The poor thing. She's just a young girl. The stuff that burns though huh? Made her lighter? Well hair dyes shouldn't do any of that unless... Oh gods, they put ammonia on the girl?! What kind of monsters would do this to their own child.

"I'm sorry hun, people can be cruel sometimes, I know firsthand." I said, kneeling down to her level. "I once had someone very close to me who hurt me very bad. My own brother. But trust me, there are ways to get away from it all. And I know you're still young but someday you'll be old enough to take care of yourself and you can get away from those who are hurting you."

"As for the ones at school, well if it helps any, remember that they could never be as strong as you. Why, I'm sure if you all were thrust into the wild you'd be the only one to survive. Tell me, what do you like to do?" I asked her kindly.

The whole time I was talking I couldn't look away from her fur, or, the skin I could see through her fur. It looked mighty raw from the stuff.

Aveira relaxed a little. The man actually seemed to be nice. His kind words definitely made her feel better. She uncurled her wings a little bit and scooted closer to the man, rubbing her arms thoughtfully. Now one had ever asked her what she liked to do. What did she like to do?

"I like..." she paused, trying to think of things she enjoyed doing. Suddenly it came to her. "I like flying," she said a little shyly. "But I have to be careful not to do it over the castle. Momma says the knights will think I'm trying to hurt people," she explained. It made sense to her. From the stories she'd heard, seeing a zith fly overhead might make ever her feel scared.

"It's really pretty in the sky, though," she told him. "Everything looks so tiny. Did you know that clouds are made of water," she asked in excitement. "They look comfy, but they're actually really cold and wet!" She'd never told anyone about the clouds before. Her parents hated whenever she mentioned flying, so she was always sure to keep her experiences to herself.

I chuckled. "Do you need to be back by any time? Perhaps I can take you outside the castle for a bit to fly? You'd be surprised at how much freedom you get by stepping outside those walls." Today could be fun, I thought. Help a young girl out, watch a creature I'd never seen before be happy and fly? I had time to kill before my ship left.

Perhaps I could make her something? A toy. I bet she didn't have many of those by the sound of her parents, who didn't seem too concerned with her welfare.

But one question remained unanswered. What was she? She seemed strong but she was sweet enough. I haven't done too much reading on creatures and races, my studies were always in books of animation and reimacy. Still, I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I feel like I already know, but it just hasn't come to me yet...

Aveira smiled in excitement. "No, I don't need to be back any time soon!" She forced herself to calm down, not wanting to seem to eager. "Are you sure you can take me?" she asked. She glanced at his backpack, only just now noticing it. "Are you going somewhere?" she asked curiously.

Standing up, she brushed herself off and stretched. Her legs had gotten cramped up, but it wasn't too bad. At least it took her mind off her burns. Looking back at the man, she smiled again. She felt so happy and relaxed. it was a nice feeling, and one she hadn't had in a very long time.

Maybe this man would be friends with her. She'd like that. Aveira had never had a friend before.
