The Spider King's Scrapbook

In which the Spider King is ranting because he’s in a really bad mood right now.

Or:

„Why I hate Group Assignments“

The professors at my university are really big on group assignments. I’ve had to write a paper together with other students or do a presentation together with them in every single one of my courses so far. The professors usually go on and on about how it fosters creativity, how you get better ideas if a couple of people work together and how it improves the relationships between students, but I found the opposite to be true. Lately my professors have also decided that online discussions are going to be part of our assignments. They thought it was a really awesome idea. Of course it also didn’t work out as planned in my opinion.

People are hesitant to take the first step and make suggestions. Nobody seems to want to take charge. So I usually end up telling my group members, „Let’s just write the essay about that, okay?“ because they don’t seem to be able to come up with anything. In one case I wrote the essay on my own because they weren’t doing anything, threw it at them and told them to at least add a few lines so that we could pretend it was a group essay.

Most of my fellow students seem to be perfectly happy waiting until shortly before the deadline so that they can get stressed out. We are usually given a few weeks to finish the essay, but nobody ever seems to want to start early. So while I sit back and relax because I’ve done my part, they are getting nervous. Maybe they are masochists?

Group work does not foster creativity. All those great brainstorming sessions that the professors talk about never really seem to happen. Most of the time those forced group discussions are kind of lackluster because – guess what – they are forced! I don’t know where the professors got the idea from that such things would challenge us. I have yet to see those inspiring discussions. It usually ends with me starting a discussion every other day because we are of course being judged as a group. So we either all pass or all fail the course.

Sometimes I have the feeling as if I’m the only person who actually wants to be there and wasn’t forced!

I occasionally enjoy working on something with one other person, but in my experience the essay usually just turns into a confusing mess if you have 5 or 6 people working on it.

Our professors also seem to think that things get done faster if you have a couple of people working on an essay together because each student only has to write a few pages, right? That’s what one professor told me when I asked her if I could just write the essay alone because I was completely fed up with group work at the time. „You won’t be able to handle the workload“.

I recently wrote a 20 page paper in a week, and I got an A on it. I needed a positive mark on that paper in order to be allowed to write my thesis, so I put some effort into it. The paper for the course in question was supposed to be a mere 10 pages, and it was a topic I was already very familiar with from my previous studies. We were given a few weeks to finish it. So I don’t understand where she got the idea from that it would be too much work. I work faster, more efficiently and have much better ideas when I’m allowed to work on my own.

In my experience having a couple of people working on the same thing inevitably leads to delays.

We are also supposed to write about our experience with the group assignments. I wonder, should I write about how much they suck and why and why I think they should limit all that group work somewhat? Would that be any good?

Alex-

There's a ton of research, very valid studies, that look at the whole brainstorming process and group activity process and pretty much invalidate the whole idea of it. Its been in use since 1948 but professors in the know should have stopped requiring this for ages since some of these studies started concluding in the 80's and found, to a very last one of them, brainstorming detrimental to the creative process. I think it'd be a heck of an interesting paper. And I can completely and utterly sympathize with you. I'm that person that DREADS group work because I know its usually a huge project and I'm the one doing it... alone. So I used to pick and choose my electives in college actually based on how much group work there was in a course and avoid them like plague if it was over my personal limit of tolerance.

I totally understand too. I had a big group presentation at Uni yesterday, worth a whole unit of marks. The girl in our group was so bitchy, but we did it ok. I heard that other groups fell out, and couldn't arrange meetings. It's more hassle than it's worth.

INTJ.

So I was just reading Erudite’s scrapbook and tried out the personality test she had linked to. Apparently I’m INTJ, and my role variant is the Mastermind.

According to the test I am:

-moderately expressed introvert
-very expressed intuitive personality
-distinctively expressed thinking personality
-moderately expressed judging personality

The folowing explanations are from Victor's scrapbook:

How You Get Your Energy
Introverts (I) think before they act. They are motivated internally and often need to wind down in ‘alone time’ after a long time around a bunch of people. They value depth over breadth in knowledge and relationships alike.

How You Get Your Information
Intuitives (N) enjoy discussing theory and telling stories. They can easily visualize something as it is explained to them and learn best from reading and abstract discussion. They are more likely to trust a gut feeling and think often about the future.

How You Make Decisions
Thinkers (T) sometimes come off as detached. They thrive in facts and logic and accept conflict as a normal part of life. They can easily find and finish incomplete tasks. They understand deadlines, rules, and morals as concrete and unbendable.

How You View The World
Judgers (J) require order, planning, and routine. They need to separate work and play, having important matters settled before anything else can be done. They like to make lists and plan the day, and may become flustered if things change too much.

Delays and such.

As you may or may not know I’ve been living in Finland and attending university here for the last little while.

I will however spend the summer and fall in the country where I was born.

I haven’t decided yet whether I’m also going to write my thesis there or come back here.

I originally wanted to graduate this winter/spring, but I’ve decided not to graduate a semester early after all, but do a few more courses, try to do some research and learn another language or two to increase my chances of getting into a decent Ph.D. program.

I think that’s better than rushing through university and trying to do everything in minimum time or less.

Anyway, what does that mean for Mizahar? I probably won’t be online a lot next month as I’ll busy with moving, paperwork, uni related stuff, work and trying to turn the empty room that’s waiting for me into something resembling a home.

I’ll post, but I’ll post a lot more slowly than I do now.

July and August should be normal again as I won’t actually start writing the thesis until later this year.

Yes, another language or two. Or maybe three. I just really enjoy learning new languages. Feel free to be amazed. :p

I’ve recently gotten interested in the languages that are related to Finnish (which I already know, seeing as I live in Finland). A lot of them are spoken in Russia which means that the literature on them is usually in Russian.

Finnish or English literature is somewhat hard to find and often not as in depth as I like. So if I ever want to learn Udmurtian for example or just read about the Udmurtian people I need to know Russian.

While I can already read and write Cyrillic and identify certain Russian words, it’s not really enough to read academic literature, so I need to improve – a lot.

I also want to learn Hungarian because it’s related to Finnish - and Hebrew, even though it doesn’t have anything to do with my field because it uses a different script and is just totally different from everything else I know, and I’ve always liked a challenge.

I really, really want to get into a good/very good Ph.D. program and not be forced to study at a university that nobody has ever heard of and nobody cares about – or worse yet, stop my academic career before it’s ever begun, and I hope that the amount of languages I know and my international experience will at least make them take a second look at my application and care a little less about the things on my CV that aren’t perfect.

Russian would be perfect. I do have a love for the language. Were it more useful, I would probably find the same inspiration as you! However, it's not >>
