Magic Isn't Always Looked Down On (Seven Xu)

Veltha jerked her head up to look at the withered old man up front. She almost laughed at him. And she didn't usually laugh. He was old and wrinkled, and had round little glasses that barely fit his small beady eyes. He panted heavily, and looked as old as the things in this shop themselves. She turned her attention to Seven as he started talking. He had ungracefully clunked the box down, it landed with a thud. She smirked at him when he asked all kinds of questions about ghosts. Ghosts. The very things that make Mizahar Mizahar. They were connected to everything, and were always wise and brave. She almost envied them, so experienced. But, this boy deserved an answer and an answer he would get. "Boy," she said with a sly smile, "Ghosts are smarter than you think. They might not want to be seen, and have ways of preventing it. But, sometimes... you come across one who loves attention. They do have feelings you know. You don't find them. You summon them. Though, you can rarely stumble across one. They aren't rare, like you said. They are all around us, probably even listening to our conversation right now." She found herself actually talking alot. But, she knew why. She loved talking about ghosts, it was the one subject she could go on and on about.

“So ghosts are perverts and eavesdroppers, according to you,” Seven’s hands settled on a thin wooden slab, “and I never said they weren’t smart. I met a ghost. Stumbled upon him, you could say, but I think he chose me. He was just like a person, only … desperate, really, really desperate.”

The slab opened into a thin notebook. Pages from another book had been copied, but the handwriting was virtually undecipherable. Between a painful lack of ink, age, and water spots, the common may as well have been another language. Maybe it was; Seven did not linger long enough to check. The book slammed shut with a mute thup, and was placed easily back among the hoard of treasures.

The bell on the door rang again, but it was only a gust of wind that pushed through the narrow aisles. The elderly shop keep moved to remedy his unlatched door. The pair pushed on, beyond the hazy glow of dirty windows. Seven had little issue probing the darkness for what he desired; his keen vision in low light was a gift among the many faults that came with his mixed blood.

“Don’t call me boy,” he added, “my name is Seven.”
