Ravens... Why Ravens? [Open]

Day 57 of Summer, AV 512

Surely it was nothing. Birds, they were everywhere here. there was everything everywhere here. Eldon was peering down from the Spires to the ground way below. He could have sworn he saw a strange sight. Black birds, maybe crows, in a mass group just soaring above the ground. He had lost sight of them by now, hence his futile searching for those shadowy feathered monsters. Eldon pondered for a moment. He wasn't sure why what he thought he saw, appeared strange, but he couldn't shake it from his head, something was indeed strange. And you know how it is when you are curious to a flaw.

You have to check it out!

Eldon had descended from the Spires to the forest floor, his spear in his hand, a throwing axe in his belt, and little more besides the clothing on his back. The Drykas looked around, unsure of which way he should begin his quest, his bird-hunting journey, though a strange, single 'caw' called out to him from the north. Eldon grinned as he started to run, not walk, in that direction. The birds, he wanted to find them, if for no other reason than to see what they were doing. Or, again, that's what he thought he wanted. Tomorrow, he would look back at himself today and truly wonder why he was so curious. What was it that made him so damned interested in birds.

Whatever it was, the birds didn't feel natural, and he wanted to figure out why.

Duvain rode along through the forest atop her horse Orodon trying not to fall asleep out of pure boredom. She hadn't talked with any intelligent life in quite some time and longed for someone to converse with. Even if it was fighting with someone....Fighting would be better than nothing and she wasn't picky. Just as she finished her silent prayer to the universe...wait...what was that? It looked like a man on the Spires doing...something. Duvain could have jumped for joy at that moment if she wasn't on top of a horse. Plus she didn't exactly want to spook a stranger that just happened to have a spear in his hand and could potentially kill her. It was quite entertaining to her the actions of the being; looking up at the sky and looking back down to think with an odd look on his face. Suddenly he descended to the forest ground, looked up with a grin, and took off. About this time Duvain thought she heard something like that of a crow cawing in the direction that the strange man ran off into. This was all entirely to odd and entertaining for Duvain to pass up the opportunity to follow him. With that, she took off after him, remembering to keep a distance as not to be noticed. She wanted to see how long she could watch before being discovered.

Ravens... Why Ravens? [Open]

Postby Eldon Sunkiss on June 7th, 2012, 4:31 am

Eldon found himself wandering further and further from the Spires, yet for some odd reason, his typical cautious self was shattered. Normally, he would have Vanah with him, his trusty strider that had been through the worst of the worst with him, or at least Sylvi, his adorable Pycon Companion. But no, for some reason, he was functioning with reckless abandon, dangerous curiosity, senseless motivation. Eldon ran, chasing the lingering echo of bird-chatter that rang in his skull like the sound of water dripping in a deep cave. It was like he knew about where it came from, but didn't at the same time. Every time he found himself lost, or unsure which way to go and considering returning to the Spires, another tantalizing sign of bird-talk, the voice of a raven, would coax his new adventurous flare into action once again, and he wandered further from safety of the Spires.

Eldon paused for another moment as he turned his head away from the distant crows, he thought he heard another sound. A horse perhaps? It seemed unlikely a horse would be found this far north. Whatever, it was probably just his imagination. He returned his focus to the direction of the raven voice, and didn't reconsider for a second of what he was doing. Chasing the sound of a mere shadow he saw maybe an hour ago. Every passing moment led him deeper into danger that he wasn't equipped to handle.

Yet, he had no idea that he was already in graver danger than he'd possibly seen since his run-in with the beast that harassed the Pycon in the Sea of Grass.

Eldon stopped his maddened running for the final time as he stood tall, panting and sweating despite the chilled air of Taldera breathing down his neck. He finally found his targets, a group of a dozen or so ravens, as black as ink and creepy as anything could be. Every single black bird was watching Eldon, which wasn't hard to believe since he was a crazy-looking human that just burst into the area with a weapon in hand and nearly exhausted from physical strain. Eldon returned the gaze to the birds, or at least one at a time, and this awkward silence lasted longer than anyone would feel comfortable. Eldon, then, dropped his spear, allowing it to sink to the grass at his feet and he walked forward, stepping slowly out into what was merely a small pond, and it couldn't have been more then ten foot deep at the deepest point.

'Swim. Let's swim.' Eldon nodded to himself as the bone-aching cold water began to flow up to his waist. His arms worked almost mechanically to undress himself. His shirt was flung carelessly into the water, his trousers next. In mere minutes, his body would start shaking uncontrollably, doing its best to keep whatever warmth existed inside, but the environment was too much for a mostly hairless creature as the Drykas Man. Give it a few hours, and he would pass out from overexposure to the cold. Beyond that, whatever chances of survival he currently had, wouldn't remain.

Ravens... Why Ravens? [Open]

She tried to ignore the fact that this could be a total lunatic... And how far north they were going... And the danger that was growing around her, but she was, in fact far to curious to turn back now. Wait a minuet....Could be a lunatic? The man was looking at the sky and all of a sudden started running north for roughly an hour after, what? Strange noises? Of course he was a lunatic! But there was something else about him... something that haunted her mind and made everything else elusive but she wasn't sure what. Duvain felt slightly stupid stalking a strange man all this way. So I'm putting myself in danger for curiosity alone? Hmm...Well of course! I didn't come all this bloody way to not get anything out of it. The least I can do is figure out what's going on.

The man paused for a few seconds and looked around. For a moment Duvain thought she would be spotted, but the man just shook his head in denial and continued to run. When he finally ceased running, there before him was a group of ravens dark as night with beady little eyes that gave Duvain the creeps. She was surprised to see the ravens but even more surprised that they didn't fly off when the crazed man ran up to them with his spear in hand and stopped to drop it. At this point Duvain dismounted so she could get closer without Orodon tagging along to huff and snort.

After a moment much longer than Duvain felt comfortable , the stranger said what Duvain believed to be "Swim. Let's swim." She wasn't sure if he was talking to himself or the birds, or perhaps some imaginary creature he created in his mind.Whatever the case, he proceeded to stride in the water util waist deep and bagan taking off his clothes. "Okaaay" Duvain said. She hoped he hadn't heard her vocal reaction to his undressing a somewhat short distance in front of her so she put her hand over her mouth while thinking to herself Stupid, stupid, stupid! She didn't know if she should turn around or to look at the sky so she just froze in place at the personally awkward moment she was having. With a feeling of dread, Duvain came to a realization that she was about to sneeze and with one big breath let out a loud "ACHHOO!"

Ravens... Why Ravens? [Open]

The sneeze would have startled any standard unaware creature, yet both the ravens and Eldon were far from standard. The ravens, not a single one of them broke their glares on Eldon, who was now wading to about his pectorals in frigid water. He, however, turned to look at Duvain. And that's where he revealed everything he was feeling. What he was doing was beyond stupid. It was suicidal. The urge to stand in such cold water, naked, and doing nothing to protect himself was just absurd, and the funny thing was, he knew it. His face had that look of agony, pure pain from the cold, misery from his numbing submerged hands and toes, he was hating this very moment of bone-chilling water. He wasn't the one that wanted to swim, or die, but someone did.

Eldon stared at Duvain for a long time, his lips an unnatural tint of blue, quivering uncontrollably. His eyes looked so pitiful, like a child who was scared to death, but unsure of how to handle a situation. He was in over his head, in something he didn't even comprehend. The only thing he knew was he was terrified and couldn't quite convince himself not to do this, to kill himself by simply freezing to death. Hypothermia was inching ever closer as he remained in that water.

A single raven nearby uttered an awkward squawk as Eldon's attention snapped back towards it instantly. It was like the bird itself was commanding the Drykas to watch him.

And oddly enough, that was only too true.

As she looked up at Eldon's face, Duvain didn't see a crazed man anymore, now she just saw fear in his eyes. He stood there shaking from the cold and would probably die if he didn't get warmth soon. His skin started to take on a slight blue color and Duvain knew she couldn't just stand there as he froze to death. She was cold herself but had her cloak on on top of her normal clothing to keep her warm.
The birds remained where they were making more 'caw' sounds. They seemed to command Eldon's attention with a strange power.
She began calling Orodon, sure that Eldon held no danger to her, took the blanket from her saddlebag and the cloak off her and held them out in front of her saying "Here, take these"

Eldon continued to watch Duvain in despair as she offered the necessities to rewarm himself. He wanted so badly to wade out of that frigid pond, to accept those dry clothes and blankets, but still his body refused him. His eyes wandered around, between Duvain and the Ravens, who still stared him down. Such an unnatural glare they were giving him. And every time Eldon peered away from them, one would give an awkward screech to reclaim his attention.

"Birds... bad..."

That was all Eldon could say, though it was because of the language barrier rather than the hypnotism that kept him locked in that freezing water. He needed the birds to break their stares, to fly away, anything to cut off the djed link that kept him under their wicked unnatural control. Eldon, however, was trapped. Sylvi, she was too small to do anything, and she wasn't even present anyway. Eldon managed to steal another glance to Duvain.

"Help me." So pitiful, so weak. Eldon wanted to kick himself in the ass, if only his body would permit him to do so.

Ravens... Why Ravens? [Open]

Eldon didn’t move an inch in response to Duvain’s offer with the exception of his shivering. The birds...they kept his attention locked in their grasp. She didn’t exactly know what was going on but she did know if it were her in the pond, she would be jumping out of the water like a cat. Tough right now she was just trying to come up with a way to scatter the birds away and get Eldon out of the water. "Help me." he said...Duvain had never heard such a desperate, helpless plea in all her life.
Duvain suddenly took off the bow she was wearing across her torso and snached an arrow from the quiver that was tied to the saddle bag on Orodon. With one fluid motion she pulled the arrow up to the bow and released the arrow, just missing one of the birds. She didn’t intend to kill the bird, just distract them long enough to lose their controlling stare with the desperate man in the water and get him out.
Running around and yelling at the birds like an idiot, she tried to get their attention as best she could. By the few words Duvain had heard Eldon utter, she knew he couldn’t speak much of her language but she hoped he knew the two she was about to yell at him....”Get out!
