Mene Madras
Kalinor’s public school Mene Madras is a simplistic teardrop-shaped building forged of stone and clay and swathed in the dull yellow silk it was named for. The school is a focus and social center; the smaller dwellings that surround the school are always occupied, and meetings are held within when class is not in session.
The humble building has one room; a teacher recites academic lessons to a handful of children of varying ages. These teachers are always former students and experienced in gleanings. Guests are welcomed and common; acolytes of Viratas visit classes weekly, often with lessons of morality painted in Viratas’ vision. Class sizes are never large in Kalinor’s small community with classes ranging from six or seven some years, to fifteen children at most.
Lessons are held three days a week and range in academic material. Children between the ages of eight and fifteen are taught together, meaning younger students listen to and become aware of concepts that they may not encounter or learn fully for several years. Because of this, young symenestra tend to take on an air of precociousness that is not often found in children elsewhere.
Schooling is mandatory for all children in Kalinor. During their seven-year term, they are exposed to subjects such as religion, language, literature and art, sciences, history, and the cultures of other tribes and races. Later, they learn of their harvest and its benefits to the knowledge and advancement of their people. When a student is deemed worthy to graduate, they are awarded a small ribbon in one of four jewel-tones embellished with a wooden carving of the blossom that represents their Web.
Trades are not taught in public school. Instead, apprenticeships are encouraged once the individual has learned the academic basics.
