Character Concept

Solitaire, the blind man with a reputation for being one of the only blind men who would gamble coin in a tavern and win in a game of cards. He is the warm and gentle victim from a past crime who’s wounds have brought an acute attention to things that many would find trivial, but to a blind mind things like listening to the waves and feeling the breeze carry the scent of summer flowers are truly amazing when you cannot behold sight. Solitaire is regarded as an exceptionally intelligent man, he thinks nothing of his inability to see and instead puts further efforts into his own learning and his ambitions to become a renowned scholar and traveler. He is patient and considerate of others though suffers from an inability to really trust anyone instead opting to maintain his mental fortifications to stop anything from turning his mind from the ultimate goal : Knowledge.

Character History

Once upon a time in a small village not even worth knowing the name of, a young boy named Emeran lived a peaceful life as the son of a farmer and his young wife. Emeran was six when the village was raided by a group of renegades, the intended target of course was a trade caravan that had left hours before hand but seeking some sort of haul they decided to pillage the village instead. In the slaughter that followed the small hovel that Emeran had called home was set alight with himself, his parents and his older sister still inside the building, the only thing Emeran can remember of the ordeal was the intense heat and light given off by the flames and the tortured screams of his family as they died slow and painful deaths.

That is all Emeran could account for in his early life, when the raiders left he was saved by a few survivors from the attack whom dragged him from the flames as the rest of his family died. He remembered the terror as the cold realization came onto him, the fact’s where laid before him that his family was dead and he was now truly alone, it wasn’t until a few minutes later that it sunk in that all he saw was complete darkness and then the pain overcame him forcing him into unconscious slumber.

When Emeran awoke he was in the home of an aging man who taught the local children to read and write, he could not see anything and felt the searing scars across his eyes. He had been blinded by intense burns across his face, never again to see light. His grief lasted for years as he stayed with his new adoptive guardian, Arthur, whom over the years nursing the boy to a more stable state of emotion also taught him to speak properly and pick out emotions from voice. He also taught the boy to read Braille, a written language for the blind that was used by very few in Mizahar but was enough to secure the boy a shred of hope in the future to learn.

It wasn’t until he left his home and began travelling bearing a pack of cards gifted by his mentor that he began to earn the name “Solitaire”, he found it difficult to find work as his training was in the helping of the mind and few people in the cities would pay for such a skill. Instead he turned his mind to gambling to pay his way, he learnt to pick up the emotions in peoples voices and relied on his instinct’s to win his fare. Quickly he earned small reputations among gambling circles in the settlements he passed, a reputation of being able to win coin without seeing the cards, a reputation that got him more than one beating. Eventually however he decided to turn his mind to that of the academic and enrolled in the university of Zeltiva to study magic…
