Trial at the Lectern [Solo Flashback]

Asha stood silently beside her father at the edge of the Meditative Petal. She looked up to find that kindly face gazing down on her. He nodded his head to encourage her on, and they moved forward together. The two walked together, one the smaller version of the other. Both with furry coats of jet black glistening in the summer sunlight filtering through the leaves. Even their eyes were the same rich brown hue.

The pair journeyed to the center of the petal, coming to a rest before a group of Jamoura seated around a twisted tree and stump. The Lectern of Eyris was an impressive sight no matter how many times she saw it. Her father valued the goddess Eyris above all others and so it was with great reverence that he brought his daughter there.

An old Jamoura awaited them at the edge of the group; the male was slightly wizened and graying with age. His face was contemplative but not unkindly so. Asha knew him to be Gruuk, resident priest of the Lectern. Her father and the priest exchanged nods and Gruuk stepped back, gesturing out an arm of welcome to Asha. Her father motioned her on and she stepped forward.

All were silent, a peaceful tranquility held the group. None looked up as she walked past and approached the empty stump. Her heart raced in nervous anticipation. Usually the stump was occupied by an older member of the community, meditating for days on end to produce epic works of argument and philosophy. But every once in a while a younger resident was invited forward to sit upon the treasured stump and be introduced to the experience and process.

Only half a bell before she had been complacently licking a stick covered in ants for her midday meal. Each bulbous ant crunched juicily in her mouth as she enjoyed her favorite meal. But then she felt the gentle touch of her father’s hand on her shoulder and she turned to hear him intone that she had been invited to sit at the Lectern of Eyris.

Asha had known her father would one day request a spot for his daughter at the stump, it was an essential component of his life and he meditated with the group daily. He had sat upon the stump many times, her mother had often brought her to meditate there when he did and listen to him expound on his ideas. She had not known it would be this day though, and immediately felt nervous. What would she possibly meditate upon to discuss with others? Topics of thought seemed to have fled from her mind completely and she found only blankness.

Asha stepped upon the stump and settled her weight beneath her awkwardly, shifting herself a few moments to get comfortable. She was young and still learning the way of wrapping her bulky body into a small stone. She envied her mother who sat at meditation with a fluid and elegant body. Her mother had meditated long enough to be graceful in her broad Jamoura body. She looked out briefly at the collective of meditating creatures, spotting her mother sitting among them and her father settling in beside her. She took three deep breaths to calm her heart and closed her eyes.

Trial at the Lectern [Solo Flashback]

She stared at the back of her eyelids hopelessly. What in the name of Caiyha would she meditate on and offer for discussion? She couldn’t very well say nothing. That would bring immense shame upon herself and her father, and Asha did not consider that an option. Despite her refusal to fail she couldn’t think of a single thing. Other then how badly she didn’t want to fail and humiliate herself. She could hardly hear her thoughts over the sound of her heart beating fiercely.

That was the first step then. She needed to calm herself. Until she was calm she could not think. She was letting her emotions run her body and mind which was getting her nowhere quickly. Asha inhaled. She exhaled. Inhale. Exhale. She focused all of her mental awareness on her breath and slowly her heart began to slow. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. She inhaled deep breaths that expanded her ribcage to full capacity and then slowly blew the air out. It was the simplest and most classic form of meditation and she knew she must rely on it to get to her mind in order. She had to try and not think about the honor of her father, the dozens of people meditating and waiting to hear her words, or her own dread of failure. Oops. Her heart beat had increased again and Asha was certain that this time all would be able to hear how frightened she felt.

For a full bell Asha struggled to keep her mind reigned in and not be overcome with fear and longing. She wanted so badly to prove herself. It was her first public display of thought and ideas and she desired only to not completely humiliate herself and her family. It was all she could think of. With a sick feeling of dread in her heart she was beginning to suspect that she couldn’t do it. That she was a failure of a Jamoura and didn’t deserve the knowledge her community passed down to her. It was becoming clear that she was a complete and total idiot without a single thought in her empty mind. Tears threatened to escape her clenched eyelids as her body heated up in response to her emotions.

Asha huffed quietly to herself. This wouldn’t do. She had to get herself under control. She could do this. She knew it. She had to know it. She had to make herself believe it. Asha tried to imagine that she was sitting at home surrounded by family meditating as they always did upon rising each morning. She tried to forget the people sitting around here and concentrate only on her meditation. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Asha’s heart began to fade again to a careful thump…thump…thump.

For a second bell Asha meditated upon the stump. Her heart beat slowed and her mind cleared. The emotions that had overcome her had faded away slowly with time. Her body had become relaxed and settled into the familiar seated position. Asha still worried about the outcome of the day but her fear no longer occupied all of her thoughts. With her eyes closed, Asha smiled to herself. She knew what she would say. She knew it would not be the most eloquent or brilliant thing to have come from sitters upon the stump but she also knew that she would be able to avoid shame. With her thoughts in order and her body under control once more she opened her eyes and cleared her throat to announce she was prepared to speak.

Trial at the Lectern [Solo Flashback]

Asha gazed around as the creatures surrounding her slowly began to open their eyes. She concentrated on her breathing so her fears wouldn’t overtake her again. She swallowed a few times to clear her throat. She certainly didn’t want to try and speak with a squeaky squawky voice. That wouldn’t be a very auspicious start to her first speech.

“I have meditated upon the stump and this is what has come to me. When I first settled upon the this seat I could not think or hardly breath for fear. My mind was clouded with doubt and my bones trembled with fright. Only deep meditation has quenched the thirst of panic and agitation. My meditations have led me to this thought. I submit to you, that emotions are futile and hold us back. Emotions are unnecessary and only slow the mental processes with obstacles constructed of fear and pain. They wrap us in chains and drown our precious thoughts under their heavy weight. We cannot pursue intellectual endeavors as we ought while we are burdened with emotions and must always fight to hold them back. It is important to always stay on guard against emotions and ensure that our judgment is not clouded by them.” Asha paused a moment and moistened her lips with the tip of her pink tongue.

“Only with constant vigilance can we break the bonds they hold over us. Only by throwing off the shackles of emotion can we pursue knowledge and uphold the balance of nature as Caiyha intended us to. We cannot be partisan in our stewardship of nature if we allow our decisions to clouded by our hearts. I intend to always stay on guard against my emotions, and try to never let them overcome me again. Today I have learned that emotions are to the detriment of our race, and I will put forth the effort to always be aware of when my emotions are making my decisions for me. We Jamoura are a race of the mind. Let the humans and other hairless creatures be weak slaves to their emotions.” Asha completed her speech with a small bow of the head to indicate that she had finished. A few murmurs arose from the younger members of the gathering as they discussed the information. A few looks were exchanged between the older members and a Jamoura woman stood to address Asha.

“It is the Jamoura lifestyle to press back emotion in favor of logic and reason. Only with these tools can we maintain the balance of nature and avoid the follies of the brick and glass cities. It is a lesson that all must learn at some point, though it takes age to understand properly. It is well that you begin to learn this lesson early, and that these other youths have been presented the opinion as well. But don’t look down on those who are ruled by their hearts. Caiyha has provided room for all kinds of creatures in this world, and no one is better than the other. We give up emotion for logic because that is what we must do to fulfill the purpose for which we were created. Thank you for your thoughts, Asha.” The woman said and bowed to Asha. Asha returned her bow and stretched her legs before standing upright.

Asha felt stiff from her lengthy, still position. She watched as others began to rise and stretch themselves, slowly moving away from the area and talking quietly. It was over sooner then she had expected, and she wasn’t sure what she should do with herself. Letting her gaze slide across the area she noticed her parents beckon quietly to her. Smiling, she began to walk towards them. It had gone better then she had expected. She certainly didn’t amaze the crowd or expound on groundbreaking thoughts, but she had done well enough and didn’t disgrace herself. There wasn’t much more then she could ask for. Besides, she had lots of time to become to a genius.
