Summer 50, 512 AV

It had been a weary three months. Arrow had originally thought that his journey to The Spires would bring him back to a place that, though damaged by the effects of the storm, would at least have been recognizable. Their guides, citizens of the forest city, had tried to warn them, about the feral beasts, who were only a few short weeks before some of the most cerebral, erudite, and peaceful beings in all of Mizahar. Arrow had thought he had some grasp of what they were saying, but nothing had prepared him for the reality that met them when they arrived in the ravaged city. Many, if not most, of the structures were significantly damaged. Some destroyed outright, and the Ethaefal could only stare open mouthed at what once had been so very beautiful, so tranquil and so pristine. Now it was ugly, scarred and disfigured, and the mist that wrapped like a malignant miasma throughout the forest and the arboreal city held great danger still. He had thought he could be of assistance recovering and reorganizing and resurrecting their voluminous stores of written history and literature. Instead, he had been in a veritable daily battle to hunt down his former friends, trying to take them down gently and bring them in for rehabilitation. It had been exceedingly disheartening, to see one after another of the beautiful, superintelligent creatures having to be fought to the ground, some ending up injured, or worse. It had made him ill, but it was necessary. The alternative just wasn’t thinkable. Knowing what he knew, having lived here for decades once before, long ago, he had to keep on, as bereft as he felt.

Finally, though, things were easing up. Order was day by day being restored. The structures on the petals were being repaired, rebuilt or replaced. Old friends seemed to recognize him more and more each day. Life was proceeding, and Arrow had to think long and hard about what he would do next. The work camps would close eventually. Even now, people who had come to help, from all over Mizahar, were beginning to trickle away. He would consult with Trouble. He had insisted that she stay safely tucked away with Cat while he labored. Well, as safe as she could be with the ever hungry feline. Arrow looked at her and knew, she was growing up, before his very eyes. He debated within himself if it was fair to keep her here, in the deep forest, amongst other kelvics who were still on the wilder side of feral. But if they left, where would they go? He had no means to make a living now. All his equipment and inventory and supplies were long gone, in the storm. What to do?

He thought more and more of his old friend Grath, who had opened his lovely tavern, up on the Petal of the Endless Epoch. It had sustained its fair share of harm during the worst of the storm’s aftermath. But it was not entirely demolished. And the proprietor, and his beautiful mate, Kashal, were seemingly recovered from their own experience with the evil fog. But much of their inventory was gone – spilled and spoiled, and as more of the Spirians were returned to their daily lives, Arrow had noted that businesses all over the city were slowly picking up.

So it was that on this day, he clambered up to the Petal and made his way to Grath’s Rest, with the intent to ask the Jamoura if he had any need for some help. Some paid help. Arrow stepped with a lighter tread, thinking how pleasant it would be to get back to a trade he knew, and Trouble walked by his side, determined to make sure her companion did not have any fun without her. They reached the open air bar counter, with the great tree-ceiling overhead, and Arrow called out, “Hello? Anyone here?”

[Grath's Rest]You Need Me - I Need You (Cinna)

Blast the storm that caused all of the trouble that now rested on Grath's shoulders. It was one thing to endure that petching feral state that he was reduced to, but it was a whole different story to come back to find most of your life's work destroyed. It was incredibly frustrating for both him and Kashal to come back to their beloved inn and find it near ruin, and they had spent many days trying to restore it to its former state. It wasn't anywhere near the condition that they had first found it, but there were still several eyesores that needed to be fixed. At the moment though, Kashal was running many of the day to day tasks, feeding and taking care of guests, cleaning, making sure those that were homeless had a place to rest their head at night. Grath had been spending much of his time checking his losses, testing what few kegs remained of beers and cordials to make sure they weren't spoiled.

To much of his disappointment, most were spoiled, the djed rendering them unfit to drink. He did manage to find a few that we're still in good condition, but now he spent most of his time in his brewery, making both the barrels and brews to fill them. Today was much like any other day, and he was making a pear cordial that only needed to ferment for a few days before serving. He was trying to make things that did not require long to ferment, things that he could serve quickly since business was picking up. He would worry about the more complicated things later.

He was interrupted in his work by a familiar voice, one that seemed to tickle his memory but he couldn't quite place it. Deciding to let Kashal handle it, he continued with corking the barrel. But he didn't hear his lovely mate reply, nor did he hear any sort of movement. Dawdling a few more minutes he then huffed and made his way to the front, finding two people while one of them looked vaguely familiar. Grath studied the man closely and leaned against the bar, wondering who exactly he was. After a few more moments a wide grin stretched across his face, a hearty laugh following. "Arrow you old rascal! What in the name of Caiyha are you doing here?"he boomed, clapping his old friend on the shoulder and almost sending him sprawling.

Yes indeed, being smacked by a friendly Jamoura was never a physically pleasant experience. Arrow did stagger a bit, almost losing his balance. But, he wouldn’t have traded that chummy, teeth jarring gesture for the most graceful and polished bow or hand shake for anything in the world. It was such a relief to know Grath was familiar, recognizable, and cognizant of who he was. So many of his old acquaintances had struggled, or not, to reach back into what was left of their un-feral minds to place him. The smile that blossomed on the Ethaefal’s face was as genuine a one as had ever graced those lean features. He reached out to grasp the huge, dark furred arm and then, impulsively, he threw another arm around those massive shoulders and gave Grath a hug, of greeting, relief and joy all rolled into one. Arrow was rarely so demonstrative, and Trouble’s dark eyebrows shot up in surprise to see this coming from her companion. It was a poignant testament to the distress the Ethaefal had felt since first arriving at the much changed city.

“Grath!” Arrow breathed, releasing his quick but ardent grip on the huge ape. “It’s so good to see you!” He knew the Spirian would read more into that than was perhaps polite to verbalize. It’s great to see you intact. It’s great to see you in your right mind. It’s great to see you alive. Arrow was still grinning like a mad man. He looked about briefly and said, “I’m here because I think you could use a hand, old friend.” His expression softened and saddened a bit. “So much damage, everywhere. So much work still to be done.” He reached out to pat the dark fur gently. “But I am so glad to see you back, here.”

Arrow gestured towards the brew house. “Is it all a loss?” He had noted the smoke from the stove under the tun, no doubt. “I see you’re back to it, though.” Goving his old friend a direct look, he asked quietly, “Any way I could talk you into giving me a job?”

“After all,” he added, the grin returning. “You taught me everything I know about brewing. I learned from the best.”

OOCIs it OK to assume Grath was the one who first taught Arrow brewing? If not, I can edit that out.

[Grath's Rest]You Need Me - I Need You (Cinna)

Arrow hadn't changed much at all in Grath's eyes, but then again when did he ever? He looked much as he had all those years ago and Grath was the one who had gotten older, a fact that he was very conscious of. Grath and his mate couldn't keep up with everything in the inn like they used to, and Arrow couldn't have come at a better time for it. The fact that Arrow had hugged him wasn't lost on Grath, the Ethaefal was rarely one to demonstrate his emotions and Grath wondered just what his old friend had been up to since they had parted.

"Well I ain't running around crazy no more, that's for sure,"the Jamoura said with a chuckle, knowing exactly what his friend had meant by the comment. It was indeed much better to be in one's own mind again, and Grath had felt better than he had for a long time. "I won't lie and say that I couldn't use your help old friend, as you can see for yourself the state in which things are,"he said, his voice growing more serious as he gestured around the room. Grath had done what he could to get his place ship shape again, but there was simply so much damage that he felt that it was a never ending chore. The walls needed fixing, tables and chairs replaced, and of course everything needed to be cleaned. "I was never expecting something like this happening, and frankly I could use all the help I could get. Even from a rowdy pupil,"he said with a small grin, turning around and gesturing for Arrow to follow him to the back.

"This is all that is left,"he said grimly when they walked into the back room, a few small kegs still standing that weren't damaged. "Terrible if you ask me, and certainly not enough for when business starts to pick up again." Grath wasn't sure what he was going to do when that happened, because he simply didn't have enough to meet the demand should business rapidly begin to take off. Brewing took time, and when you were constantly rushing to refill what was lost.....well Grath didn't feel he made the best that way. "I can hire you on as a brewer, although you might end up helping me do some other tasks as well when being here. I can honestly say I'm glad that you came by and asked, since I know you know what you are doing," he said looking down at his friend. "So what you do say?"

Arrow had crossed his arms over his chest as the Jamoura gestured at the devastation wrought on his tavern. It was bad, but not irreparable. But he grinned widely at Grath’s little jab, and retorted, “I was only trying to keep up with you, my friend.”

Following Grath into the brew shed, he looked at the meager few kegs and nodded in agreement. When Grath indicated that he could indeed use some help, Arrow once again reached out and put an affectionate hand on the Jamoura’s arm.

“I say I would love to work with you again, Grath. As a brewer, and whatever else I can do around here. Just say the word, point me in the direction you want and I’ll do my best to help you get this place back in shape.”

[Grath's Rest]You Need Me - I Need You (Cinna)

Grath looked down at his old friend and smiled, knowing that he would be able to rely on him. He then laughed and clapped the man on the back, almost sending him sprawling into the dirt. It was sad to see the state that the inn had fallen into, but he knew that with the extra help he would be able to get it back up an running again soon. Especially now that most people were without homes, Grath needed to get it running as quickly as possible.

"I knew I could rely on you! As you can see, we don't have much in the way of drinks that we can offer. So my first concern is to get some things brewing that won't take up a considerable amount of time. People need a little bit of liquid happiness in these times," he said with a shake of his head, gesturing for his friend to follow him back into the main room. Leaning against the bar, he looked down at the man who he had taught so long ago and thanked Caiyha for his good fortune. "So let's sit down and go over some things that we can get brewing, aye?"
