AZUR Name: Azur Race: human Age: 20 Birthday: Spring 12, 492 Physical Description Azur is a slender, compact young man, with clean, straight limbs and a nicely sculpted physique. His natural (and cultivated) poise, and grace of movement, enhance the presentation of his body as something akin to a lovely work of art. A shock of dark hair sets off an almost creamy complexion, a rarity amongst the people of the desert realms of Eyktol. His eyes are notable both for their color, reminiscent of the shifting green-blue of the sea, and their slightly larger than average size. Thick, black eye brows and lashes set them off, like two bright jewels. The only possible mar to these handsome features is the pout that appears too frequently on those full, pink lips. When he smiles, however, his face is suffused with a warmth that seems to come from Syna herself. Character Concept Very much a product of his environment, Azur can appear to be a young man of conflicting extremes. His profession requires complete focus on others, with the aim of knowing what it is they want before they even know it themselves. And he’s very good at this. On the other hand, he is also very focused on himself, his wants and needs and what does and does not please him. In a word, he can be a bit of a brat. However, around his customers, he is always soothing, solicitous and often, seductive. Having spent literally a lifetime observing and learning from the other employees of the House of Precious Gems, Azur has many skills, and he puts them to good use, and is quite popular with the patrons of the House. But when he isn’t earning his living, he can be selfish, petty, spoiled and immature, a real momma’s boy. He has the grace and talent of a driven performer; but, he can act like a whiny child. His moods, when not working, blow hot and cold. Perhaps part of his whimsy is the need to keep it all under control while working, while appearing not to, as if what he did was simple, effortless and always completely enjoyable (which it often isn’t). At the same time, Azur truly has a loving heart, and gives himself over completely in terms of emotional connections to those he considers friends, and those he loves, which are many. As he doesn’t deliberately seek to hurt others with his little tantrums and moods, he’s always quite surprised, and hurt, to discover that someone doesn’t like him. For the most part, Azur is pleasant to be around, gernerous and friendly. Just watch out for those mood swings. Character History Azur was born a slave and has lived all his twenty years in the House of the Precious Gems, one of the nicer brothels in Ahnatep. His mother, Seri, is a slave there as well, though she no longer is employed in the same capacity as she was when Azur was conceived. At that time, she served as a relatively high-priced "entertainer", a woman who gave pleasure to her patrons in a variety of ways, one of the "Gems" of the house. As most of her exclusive clientele were Eypharians, it’s possible that Azur’s father was of this race. Seri, being human, of course gave birth to a child with only two arms, so his patrimony is uncertain. He may in fact be all human, and given his un-Eypharian complexion, this seems likely. The issue was not one for controversy, though, and Azur grew up in an environment where such things as geneologies were fluid and not of much importance, to the employees at least. There is some speculation that Azur’s father was known to Seri, and that is why she did the unusual and carried this child to term, instead of opting for other routes available to women in her profession. When he arrived, Azur was certainly much loved, and doted on by not only his mother but also the other women who lived and worked at the Precious Gems. He had a happy, lazy childhood, not being required to do anything really, though he showed some proclivity for singing and dancing. The owner and manager of the establishment, Nuura, had always been quite fond of Seri, and was just as fond of the boy, treating him almost like a beloved grandchild. When he was old enough, Seri and some of the other young men and women employed by Nuura began to teach Azur the many skills he could use to one day enter the same profession they were all engaged in – that of entertaining the men, and occasional women, who came to the Precious Gems for pleasure and relaxation. During this time, Seri ‘retired’ from actively entertaining patrons and became a Shajeb to Nuura. Two years ago, Seri became Nuura’s Sprisen, due to the great love the two women bear one another. Thus Azur’s place in the House is relatively stable, as much as any slave’s fate can be said to be secure. Azur excelled at his lessons and has become adept at singing, dancing and playing the harp. A few years ago, he began entertaining clients of his own and he has enjoyed some popularity amongst those who patronize the courtesans of the city. As far as he is concerned, life is good. At some point, though, he believes he might have to eventually find someone who really treasures him enough to make him a Shajeb, and hopefully, a Sprisen. For a courtesan can not hope to remain attractive enough to continue in that line of work forever, can he?
